View Full Version : Spiders - Squash or Take Outside?

Chris Christie chose squash.
The New Jersey governor demonstrated his bug killing skills to a group of fourth-graders when the unwelcome guest crawled across the desk in his office. Video captured the crowd of kids pointing out the arachnid, and the governor making an executive decision: He kills it with his hand, then wipes the remains on his pants.
“That's also one of the fun parts of being governor. Any bugs on your desk, you're allowed to kill them and not get in trouble," the governor is heard saying on video posted by his office.
Not everyone seems to agree. Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said the governor missed a teachable moment.
"He probably did it without thinking,” Newkirk said in a statement. “Some people put the spider outside, but spiders are often scary to people, and that can prevent them from pondering their worth."

Does anybody actually take spiders outside? How does that work? Do you just pick it up?

I don't kill spiders. They eat other bugs.

Also, lol @ People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals condemning the killing of an insect. They are the most ridiculous organization ever.

I even squish them when they're outside. Preemptively, to keep them out of my house.

Spiders fall under kingdom Animalia, so they are animals. I still generally kill them though.

Spiders are not animals. They are aliens. Seriously, look at one close up sometime.

It's not my fault that a stupid child's game doesn't offer enough options.

I either leave them where they are (they're great at eating other bugs) or I take them outside if they're loitering by the door.

I only kill them if they are in my son's room. Usually I just shoo them away. I prefer not to kill them if I don't have to. My reasoning for this is that I would not like to be squashed at random and without purpose. If I am to be squashed, let it be for a good reason.

Death is often random and always meaningless.
Give me one example of a meaningful death. And no, Jesus doesn't count.

You didn't say who it had to be meaningful to!

Depends on the spider and where they're hanging out. For instance, there's a little harmless guy that has taken residence in a little hole around a door frame. He's cool. He minds his business and snaps up little bugs, I guess, cause he ain't dead yet.
The pool patio tends to have a lot of crab spiders, which are harmless but they are in the way and often die for it:

On the other hand, there are black widows galore nearby along with some big, annoying-as-hell wolf spiders. Wolf spiders, though big, are fairly harmless. However, they have this awful problem where they carry their horde of spiderlings on their bodies. Bring your foot or something down on one and the babies get scattered by the rush of wind. Last week, as a friend was leaving, he thought he saw something scram into the house. It was a wolf spider and he went to smash it along the wall where he found it. Weeeell, that triggered a spiderling exodus which I had to grab a paper towel and eliminate. Soon as he hit that spider I just saw little spiders crawling up the wall and across the floor. Not so awesome. Thankfully I'm pretty sure I killed 90% of them.

If it's at all possible, I'll take it outside by placing a cup/plastic tupperware type bowl over it, then sliding a thick piece of paper under that to trap it. Then I throw it out the door, sometimes bowl and all if I'm freaked out enough. Other times, depending on where it's actually at I've killed them by vacuum or rinsed them down the drain in the shower (if they are just chilling in my tub). I feel bad and normally murmer that I'm sorry little guy butyouwereinthewrongplacewrongtime, and kinda look away. I've never actually squished one. Ugh that's just gross.
Daddy Longlegs are the ones I will let live most since they eat other bugs that are annoying, Black Widows of course are kill on sight. Once, and only once have I actually kept one as a "pet" by feeding it flies that I've caught...per my little girl when she was a tiny person.

When I was a kid I used to flush twice after squashing because I worried the survivors of our insect genocide had taken root in whatever was below the toilet and were always waiting for an opportunity to counter attack.

Heh. They should have called them werewolf spiders, though I'm sure there were idiots that fell for it as zombie spiders.

This is exactly my point. Mortality is not sentient. We are. It is the responsibility of man to impose justice on an uncaring cosmos, because we are the only (known) arbiters of it.

I do not squash.
I usually use a lighter to burn them alive. For serious webs/egg sacs I will get out the propane torch.

I only have the dangerous ones on my KOS list... black widows, brown recluses etc.
