In what universe is a dog more self-sufficient than a cat? How about we make one with actual parallels?:

Republicans are like dogs. They're stupider, shit and drool all over the place (ruin the environment), are obnoxiously loud and bark constantly (insane rhetoric), totally reliant on their masters (conservative states are poorer, less educated, receive disproportionately more money from the federal government), and are more violent (northern/liberal states are the most peaceful, southern/conservative states are the worst).

Democrats are more like cats. They're smarter, more practical, notably don't shit and drool all over the place, and while occasionally chatty, are never as loud as a dog, tend to be much more self-sufficient, and much less likely to maul your face off than a dog.

Funny how those bastions of conservative thought are, in fact, utter shitholes, and the coasts--especially New York, California and Washington state--are the economic and cultural powerhouses. Also funny how the conservative states--HURR HURR, "PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY"--also have the highest rates of obesity.

Cat people are gay.

Which is the party that actively advocates neutering or getting rid of the EPA? Which is the party that opposes increasing CAFE standards?`Hm.. Which is the party that constantly touts "clean coal" (which is a misnomer)? The left can be pretty stupid, opposing profitable wind projects due to bird migration, opposing wave farms due to "wildlife impact" (like clams), but there's no comparison between the two.

Cats shit where they're supposed to--the litterbox. Or they can be trained to use a toilet. Dogs, on the other hand, have to be walked. Constantly. Or they piss and shit all over the place. And you're legally required in many places to pick it up and carry it around.

...says the guy who's obviously never taken care of a cat in his life. I've volunteered for 3 and a half years in an animal shelter, owned a half-dozen cats and fostered uncountable kittens, and precisely once did a cat ever fail to use the litterbox--even essentially feral cats. It's instinct. They use the litterbox unless 1) they're in mortal terror, 2) the litterbox hasn't been cleaned in ages.

So you are one of those gay crazy cat people.

Or are you a woman? I can't remember what gender you turned out to be be honest. To be fair, I thought Latrin was a woman until recently as well. But he mostly just trolls instead of foaming at the mouth.

Ah, good old delusional spin. Know how many people attended Obama's inauguration? Almost 2,000,000. How many people attended Glenn Beck's rally? Fewer than 100,000, more than an order of magnitude smaller. Sure, sure, though. Republicans are definitely the environmentally-conscious ones.

Dividing by zero still equals zero. Therefore, going by your math, if 2,000,000 people attended the Glenn Beck rally, there would still be no trash. Except probably from the handful of hippies that showed up to protest the rally.

Dividing by zero doesn't equal zero--you can't divide by zero. Perhaps you should avoid using math.

I did! But this is way better and gives a decent explanation of the materials and why they're significant. The best were pieces about the Sichuan earthquake that killed like 40,000 but the Chinese gov't never acknowledged. One exhibit is just 40 tons of steel rods from the rubble that his shop restraightened as a comment on Chinese censorship. Other stuff is huge pieces made from Qing Dynasty temples that were destroyed to make more modern buildings, etc. It's all really winky and actually mega fun (3,000 porcelain colored crabs, apparently a commentary on the Chinese word for censorship, which is the same as "sea crabs" or something):

I love this table. In my job, I sometimes get to support aquisitions. This usually takes the form of reviewing tables and data. You expect a certain amount of cherry picking (after all the seller is trying to maximize the sale price) but I am paid to look for data manipulation that we might use to negotiate a better purchase price.

So ask yourself, why would the person that built this table pick the 2004 presidential election results as the determining factor for declaring a state REPUBLICAN. Why not use the 2008 or 2012 election? Or governerships? Or the composition of the state legislature? It's pretty easy to see that the purpose in picking 2004 is that it maximizes the RED and supports the authors position in the strongest manner possible. The table would still favor blue under any definition I can think of for REPUBLICAN.

Maybe the author of the table will give us an update using the 2013 tax foundation data (when available) and the 2012 election results.

C

(so by my standards this is data manipulaion but only worth a brief mention if I were reporting back to corporate)

C

(so by my standards this is data manipulaion but only worth a brief mention if I were reporting back to corporate)Personally I would use the 2004 election because with 2008 and 2012 being such overwhelming Democrat victories it represents the most recent close election. While I ideally would use multiple elections and have a scale between blue and red rather than a binary distinction (even though they are two, completely different colors), I don't think it's reasonable to suppose chicanery just because the author was satisfied with 1. (Also, it appears to have been created in November 2008, which prevents even attempting to use 2009 or 2013 data.)

I would stay well away from governors because of the California counter-example, where a state widely acknowledged/derided as blue routinely goes red for governorships. Additionally, and this also applies to state legislatures, not as many people care about non-Presidential elections.

Thanks for posting this, it's great! The way that Ai Weiwei uses the language to manipulate the viewer into a selective experience is magnificent but not something he invented. It's really an endemic Chinese phenomenon as a result to cultural revolution and those rigid social expectations. These people, and especially the artist communities have evolved to express themselves almost entirely in metaphor. The language itself is a bouquet of inside jokes that are central to understanding the way people communicate and think. I think my introduction to this was when my teacher called me a bad python egg and then gave me the assignment of finding out what it means. It simply means bastard but there is a great history behind calling someone this. It's crazy because ideas like this catch on and carry on for several generations in china because one artist (or rarely, journalist) will carry on the metaphor of the artist before him/her. My favorite example is "the sunflower", which can be representative of a tense father/son relatonship originating from the "birth control" generation. This started with street art in the 3rd generation, propaganda film hidden references in the fourth generation and graduated to franchised film with the fifth generation. Now Ai Weiwei has carried on this metaphor with his sunflower seeds exhibit and he is THE FIRST to be public about it's significance to the rest of the world. He's such a cultural hero. And the Chinese are masters of metaphor.

And yeah, I'm watching that documentary on netflix on repeat as I write my essay on Thomas Mao. Have you seen that film? Quite possibly the weirdest concept art to come out of the "Chinese metaphor tradition." If you want to be ass deep in symbolism and uncomfortable for the entire length of an art film, watch Thomas Mao. Or just google image Thomas Mao and extrapolate from there.

Sorry for rambling. We touched on my favorite subject - dissident art.

Personally I would use the 2004 election because with 2008 and 2012 being such overwhelming Democrat victories it represents the most recent close election.

I don't know why we shouldn't take into account overwhelming victories (like the house in 2010).

I don't think it is reasonable to conclude anything other than the authors choose the data carefully to tell the story they wanted to tell. This is not chicanery, it is advocacy.

It would be interesting to see how things have turned out in the last 8 years as total federal spending is up 50% and we have had a Democratic president for 5 of those years. It may be the same (how to account for the loans to GM and Chrysler?) or it could be different.

Also of interest would be to see if the table changed using only discretionary or non-discretionary spending.

If I post in this thread again, I'll see if I can make it more flammable.

You're too fact based. You'd probably listen to the fact that the table's from 2008.

I just saw this on the news where people are saying Satan looks like Obama. Before they even talked about it they showed a picture and that was my first thought too.

It's true. Jesus said, "We're going to confiscate your money to give to others regardless of whether they really need it or are just being lazy and if you have a problem with it then you're an evil greedy racist that didn't earn what you have and are going to HELL!!!!"

I heard Jesus was all about driving every single young person from the faith by squandering all his political capital on mean-spirited, anti-gay preaching. And about endlessly petitioning local governments to force his neighbors to live by his moral standards, rather than simply living by example.

Oh, wait. So what you're saying in every one of your posts is your dad really doesn't approve of whatever life style you're living and you're lashing out hard core. Got it.

For all the intelligence I believe you to possess it seems you have a severe difficulty in separating shit for discussion. All or nothing is your battle cry.

Pardon me if I have a sore spot when it comes to the hypocrisy of modern-day Christians. Perhaps I am a little too combative about it. Christians != Republicans/the right/your personal devil/whatever they are not interchangeable in any way shape or form and I feel you either believe they are or I'm reading too much into your posts whenever either/both come up and it bugs me.

I didn't read anything explicitly saying that Christians = the right... I interpreted it as a general hate for the organized religion... Although, that previous post was a pretty heavy personal attack. While there are occasional light hearted personal attacks, they're usually wrapped in a discussion about the current topic... that one just appeared over the top.

But then again, I haven't really been following the thread too closely. So I'll post another picture relevant to the current religion discussion:

Fixed.

Most non-denominational Christians I know are pretty reasonable people overall. It's the ones that are hardcore Catholics, Baptists, etc. that tends to be out there.
