House Armed Services Committee Passes $642 Billion Defense Bill, Ignores Pentagon's Cost-Saving Request

We need to spend more money! (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10/defense-bill-house-armed-services-obama-cuts_n_1506324.html)

WASHINGTON — The House Armed Services Committee on Thursday overwhelmingly backed a $642 billion defense bill that calls for construction of a missile defense site on the East Coast, restores aircraft and ships slated for early retirement and ignores the Pentagon's cost-saving request for another round of domestic base closings.

Doesn't any politician believe in fiscal conservatism? Even Romney himself said he plans to spend spend spend on the Department of Defense if he were to be elected, more money for weapons and increase the number of troops we have (that were just cut.)

The Oil must Flow somehow...

We also need equipment to put on the ground in Eastern Europe ... that is probably part of the refurnishing slated.

Our defense spending doesn't even account for half of the world's military budget yet. We're Americans dammit, we don't just settle for number 1, we decimate the competition.

The defense industry figured it out long ago that they just need to put their plants in all over the country in the congressional districts of powerful lawmakers.

This is the same sort of thing as with the post office going on right now. They want to close some post offices, congress says no.

That being said, you would think that defense is one area where conservatives and liberals could agree. Defense manufacturing creates jobs, many of them union, and you can't outsource those jobs to China, and it of course leads to a stronger military.

Congress can't cut anything though. Even "Evil Paul Ryan's" budget that destroys the country according to Obama doesn't cut a single solitary dime. All it does is slow the rate of future spending increases. It still spends more, every year. In Washington a spending cut is defined as a cut to your spending increase amount, not an actual spending decrease.

Government bureaucracy has a powerful self interest in perpetually creating for itself a larger mission.

Kinda unrelated and this is a serious inquiry. I was under the impression that the post office is self sufficient, supporting itself off the sale of its services. Is this not correct? I could see, especially in recent years, that this could have and probably did change. I was almost certain, at least until recently, that the post office is self supporting.

The post office is supposed to be sufficient via the sales of postage and whatnot. However they still have to get permission from congress in order to do certain things. Also if the post office can't pay its bills then congress is supposed to step in.

The GOP is literally denying food, care, and medicine from children and the elderly to give more taxpayer money to their "Defense" contractor friends.

Its legalized criminality.
