View Full Version : Buffett Rule Petition

Karl Rove's Super PAC is starting a Facebook petition for people to register their opinion that if Obama and Warren Buffett want rich people -- despite all the economic good they do for the country -- to pay as high a tax rate as middle income taxpayers, then Obama and Buffett should just voluntarily pay more themselves, instead of trying to force all rich people to pay more.

I always wondered if the oldies on this board follow the party line when it comes to taxes.
When I used to work for NYC hedge funds in the massive crazy hedge fund nutty days of 2005-2007 I used to hit up lunch with a lot of our firm's tax lawyers that pretty much said their one job was to make sure the fund paid as close to 0% as possible and that all our execs paid not a point above 15%. It's always been kind of shitty for me at tax time, knowing that I pay a higher rate than those guys do.
So are you Fox News parrots all cool with that? Or are you just under the impression that it's democrats' fault that your tax rate is higher? It just seems like the one thing I'm always surprised more Republicans aren't pissed about.

Buffett shouldn't pay more in taxes unless he is required to by law. Warren Buffett would never stiff the IRS for tax money he owes, he is an upstanding American citizen.

Warning, blatantly obvious:
If I said "I wish more people didn't litter", and you said "Well I'd like to see you not litter", and I agreed and didn't litter at all, it wouldn't solve the problem I initially brought up.
Buffet and Obama voluntarily paying more in taxes is not going to accomplish what they're looking to do.

What are they "looking to do"?

I can't wait to hear the QQ about this at work.
Clarification: My crew is all white, male, middle aged and republican.
Clarification vs. 2: Fox News stays on all day or they get the shakes.

Said it before, and I'll say it again: Mr. Obama, don't raise Buffet's tax rate to meet mine. Lower mine to meet his.
It amazes me that this issue has not been addressed sooner in this country. It further reinforces the idea that the poor majority are meek and controllable.

It wasn't a trick question... which issue are you referring to?

I'm not going to speak for Backlash, but if you were serious when you asked me, the issue is deficit. Whatever economic theory you want to apply to say that tax breaks for the rich help the economy etc etc, feel free there's no point in arguing that here.
To me I just get furious at how much of our taxes is spent on interest on the debt, reduce spending, increase tax collected, promote economic growth, whatever, we just need to be netting in a direction to reduce the debt so that money just isn't wasted.
The obtuseness of thinking they want Buffet and Obama to pay extra just so they're living in the same fair world as a common person is worrisome, the idea is that if the rich are paying the same as the middle class, that value can either be a lower value, or we can reduce the debt ... or thrown away on dumb shit like our government tends to.

So, you believe that the "Buffett Rule" will fix the issue of the deficit?

Uh... seriously? Yes I believe that if one guy pays more we won't have a deficit.

Please tell me you realize that the "Buffett Rule" isn't a tax increase just on one guy: Warren Buffett.

Yes, sorry I responded like you were saying I thought Karl Rove's solution would fix it (your one line response very much like the responses you give backlash cause of his stupidities). Even with the rich paying their fair share I don't think it'll solve the deficit, nobody wants to treat the federal budget like an actual budget. The idea of the rich paying more is that you'd get more money to actually address some budget concerns, but of course in practice it'd get wasted.

Haha. When PB responds with meaningless one liners or pics he has run out of electrons firing the synapses that control his ability to form intelligent rebuttals. But go ahead and throw me like a sacrificial lamb at his ego to curry his duplicitous favor for the moment.

Welfare for corporations and the very wealthy. The notion that the very wealthy should not have to pay the same percentage of their tax because they pay so much more than everyone else. That taxing the rich hurts job growth. That taxing the rich and corporations means them passing those costs on to everyone else. All that bullshit those poor rich people tell you.

The reality is they aren't actually going to cut spending. Spending will be cut on programs one party likes then increased in programs that another party likes.
Both agreed, in a serious forum, that it was time to increase taxes as well as spend more effectively. Now by deciding that one of the above is evil they insure that nothing is done (which they both want...they're parties in Congress.)

Yeah like I said "or thrown away on dumb shit like our government tends to." I have no expectation that any amount of money would be budgeted wisely and with any foresight.
