The former Massachusetts governor got clobbered in previous contests in South Carolina, Tennessee and Oklahoma, and acknowledged that he faces an uphill climb in Alabama and Mississippi next week.
“I realize it’s a bit of an away game,” Romney said in a Birmingham, Ala., radio interview hours before his campaign announced that it spent more money than it raised in February — $11.5 million coming in, $12 million going out to beat back his opponents.
His chief rival, Rick Santorum, basked in the South’s friendly crowds — and trotted out an endorsement he hoped would resonate in the football-crazed region.

No. No, sir, you hare mistaken! And sadly so. To call us an "away game" just shows that Romney doesn't think of the South as part of the United States. It was what they call a Freudian slip.

Campaigning in Pascagoula, Miss., Romney said he is turning into an "unofficial Southerner."
"I'm learning to say `y'all' and I like grits. Strange things are happening to me," he said jokingly.

At an event in Mississippi today, he greeted the crowd at the Farmer's Market in Jackson by saying "Morning, y'all" and proclaiming he had "a biscuit and some cheesy grits" for breakfast.

Who would be dumb enough to be taken in by Romney's flimsy and condescending Southern act?

Have you ever been to the south?

My cousin came and visited from Ohio once. She was making fun of how we say yall. Within a week she was saying it, without realizing it.

This may be the most unintentionally honest article I've ever read. A few out-of-context snippets for your reading pleasure..
...dropping the letter “g” at the end of some words.
“Please give us a big hug, that’s the girls,” Romney said. He added, “I’ve been getting hugs from the Southern girls…from 12, to well, a lot more than 12.”
...admitted to the crowd at the Whistle Stop restaurant he didn’t have a clue how to use a rifle. The former Massachusetts governor said he was looking forward to hunting with a supporter present so he “can actually show me which end of the rifle to point.”
...allowed that during dinner last night in neighboring Mississippi with Gov. Phil Bryant, he “had catfish for the second time.”
...implored Alabamans to “vote multiple times” in the state’s primary.

Romney couldn't get out of here quick enough. Gingrich and Santorum are holding rallies in the South tonight. It's the tradition to hold a local rally after the voting. But Romney got on a plane and flew to a hotel in New York City. How oh how will he make it without his new favorite foods of fried catfish and cheesy grits, which I'm sure that hotel in New York doesn't even serve?

Metaphors!
When will politicians learn that "electability" is not a compelling reason to vote for a presidential candidate? Hillary Clinton's campaign ran aground on the shallow shoals of "electability," and now Romney's yacht has done the same. Turns out that when you write "Surrender, Dorothy" across the sky, Dorothy actually doesn't surrender. In fact, it makes her even more determined to resist.
In his victory speech, Santorum cemented his David versus Goliath narrative, proclaiming, "In spite of all the money that's been spent—all the money—and all the support of the establishment, you stood with the grandson of a coal miner who is always gonna fight for you." Santorum's passion, like his conservatism, is authentic. Perhaps that's why he has been able to overcome Romney's massive advantages in cash and establishment endorsements.

I've collected a few tweets to wrap up the Southern primaries, with my own summary of each tweet.

Haley Barbour's nephew says something is wrong with turnout. It's possibly the most important observation of the night.

Romney was third in both southern primaries.

In this video, Romney says a Chinese tourist wearing cowboy boots thought he was Kerry. Romney says he could tell by looking that, despite the cowboy boots, the Chinese person wasn't a Texan.

Speaking of Romney and Kerry, take a look at this flyer distributed by the Romney for governor campaign at "Pride Weekend" in Massachusetts in 2002.

Not to worry. Romney has completely -- I mean totally completely -- reversed his position on that issue.
Also, I think it was a different Kerry.
