Navigation-and-emergency-services company OnStar is notifying its six million account holders that it will keep a complete accounting of the speed and location of OnStar-equipped vehicles, even for drivers who discontinue monthly service.

OnStar began e-mailing customers Monday about its update to the privacy policy, which grants OnStar the right to sell that GPS-derived data in an anonymized format.

More... (http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/09/onstar-tracks-you/)

You know who could really use that data? Local police offices. They could just look up who was speeding in their county and mail them a ticket. Budget problems solved.

And since the federal government still owns a stake in General Motors, it would be good for the federal government too. Unless... You know what I just thought of? I bet Obama is using the OnStar data to spy on members of the Tea Party, and they don't know it yet. I've got to hop over to the Tea Party forum and post this! I may tell Michelle Bachmann too and then she can go on national teevee and warn everybody.

Speeding citations don't exactly work like that in some states. Texas included...

This is the end-game on privacy that we are headed towards. Five to ten years and I expect this will be the norm.

Soon, my precious chilling deterrent, soon.

A little off topic but this sets off my creepy-meter too. Is anyone else a little freaked out by the "snapshop discount" from Progressive? Sure, put a camera in my car and watch me any time you like...THAT'S not weird.

Speaking of scary future stuff. Has anyone heard of cellular telephones? The government has a plot to make rotary phones obsolete so that they can control our minds and then be able to track us anywhere WITH A SATELLITE.

I think I might move to Canada.

Don't you get it? The endgame is that they WANT you to move to canada. It's all a ploy!

Its not a camera silly. You plug this little chip into the diagnostics port of your car and the chip records things like RPM, acelleration, speed, braking, drive times, drive distances, etc. This information is then sent to Progressive where they can determine what kind of driver you are and apply your insurance appropriately to how you drive.

That, oddly, creeps me out even more. That, and they would most definitely cancel my insurance if they started monitoring that crap.

Haha, mine too.

If it's just for a short time, then you can remove the chip, I'd do it. I can drive granny like for a couple of weeks for a low insurance rate. Not a bad idea.
