Why did Obama request that his address to Congress be at the same time as the Republican debate next week, when he must have known that Boehner would reject the request?
I'll tell you why. It was designed to generate controversy and draw more attention to the Republican debate. Obama knew that having people like Mitt Romney at the debate would detract in voters' minds from the good Republican candidates like Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum. Obama is hoping to get as much viewership as possible for the Republican debate while Mitt Romney is still a candidate so that voters will associate Romney's crazy positions with the eventual Republican nominee.
And Boehner fell for it. Boehner should immediately send a letter to Obama saying that Boehner has reconsidered. Boehner should insist that the only time available for Obama to speak to Congress is during the Republican debate. Checkmate!
