Hot Sauce as Child Abuse

An Anchorage jury today found Jessica Beagley, 36, guilty of one misdemeanor count of child abuse.

Beagley made national headlines after an appearance on the "Dr. Phil" show that featured footage of the Anchorage mom disciplining her adopted son by forcing him to take cold showers and putting hot sauce in his mouth.

Should it be a crime to punish a child in this way? Spanking is legal for the most part. The unusual punishment in this case was less severe than spanking. If the judge gives her the maximum sentence, she could spend a year in prison. It's government run amok.

This child was adopted from Russia in 2008. Now that the mother has been convicted of child abuse, the Russians say they may try to get the child back.

I would have taken a mouthful of hot sauce any day over the spanking-beating given me by Southern Baptist Minister father. That being said, I seemed to have turned out okay.

When my aunt adopted her children from Russia, they signed a bunch of papers. One of those papers stated that they were not allowed to spank their children. If evidence was found of spanking, the kids would be taken away. Tons of weird rules with adopting from Russia.

Jessica Beagley will serve no jail time and pay no fine for punishing her adopted son with hot sauce and a cold shower, under sentencing delivered today by District Court Judge David Wallace.

Wallace sentenced Beagley to 180 days in jail with all 180 suspended, and a $2,500 fine with all $2,500 suspended. She must continue to attend counseling sessions with her sons.

I don't know about punishing the children but she should go to jail for that hair. That kind of ugly should be a crime.

People try to get all creative now days with punishment. Time out, hot sauce in the mouth, blah blah.

Give them a good ole' fashioned ass whoopin. My dad beat my ass and I didn't repeat whatever I did to deserve it. I turned out just fine. People always tell me "but you were a good kid and didn't need spankings." I WAS A GOOD KID BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT MY ASS WHIPPED.

^ Made me laugh so hard, it is totally the truth. I wasn't spanked much, but the few I had certainly made sure the behavior was never repeated.

(And for the record, my parents made sure we knew exactly what was a 'spanking' issue. I could never claim ignorance!)

Cold shower is a bit much. But the hot sauce I'm not sure. I eat hot sauce on everything and I think it would be mildly enjoyable.

Ps.

I was spanked and would never spank my child. I can remember after one spanking I literally plotted out how to murder my parents. I don't want my kid doing that.
(Btw I have a great relationship with my parents, still don't forgive them for spanking though.)
