GOP may OK tax increase that Obama hopes to block (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hcv66ONtPUG-K0C2EstqsYBU77yg?docId=5e01f49a8f5546578066437dd43 7299d)

WASHINGTON (AP) — News flash: Congressional Republicans want to raise your taxes. Impossible, right? GOP lawmakers are so virulently anti-tax, surely they will fight to prevent a payroll tax increase on virtually every wage-earner starting Jan. 1, right?

Apparently not.

Many of the same Republicans who fought hammer-and-tong to keep the George W. Bush-era income tax cuts from expiring on schedule are now saying a different "temporary" tax cut should end as planned. By their own definition, that amounts to a tax increase.

The tax break extension they oppose is sought by President Barack Obama. Unlike proposed changes in the income tax, this policy helps the 46 percent of all Americans who owe no federal income taxes but who pay a "payroll tax" on practically every dime they earn.

The GOP... sworn to protecting the rich and fucking over the working man.

The payroll tax holiday he wants to extend is for social security only.

Its like he really WANTS to drive that program into insolvency.

Anyone who believed the Republicans had actually turned over a new leaf re: conservatism should feel pretty dumb.

Who believes that Republicans are Conservatives? I think the Conservatives have put a great deal of pressure on both parties.. but no one believes people like McCain, Boehner, McConnel, Graham, etc.. are conservative.

That article is an opinion piece, it is rife with inaccuracies. Just basic historic facts it gets wrong, like which year the bill known as the "bush tax cuts" took effect. Who the two sides in the argument were over how much of the cuts to extend (Republicans were not in power yet, it was liberal democrats vs moderate democrats, with republicans cheering the moderate dems on of course). It also incorrectly calls this cut, of 120b in 1 year, less expensive than the 70b "wealthy" 1 year tax cut that was (and still is) in dispute.

The headline is also misleading, because Republicans aren't fighting against this tax increase.

But the article does serve the author's purpose. Help his guy's poll numbers.

In anycase, payroll taxes, nominally, are supposed to support social security and medicare, you can't cut them long term.

Well, we got a choice ... restore payroll taxes or reduce the benefits.

Since reducing benefits would be rather politically unpopular, the pragmatic alternative is to restore the payroll taxes.

This is why I put republicans in the same group as I do the fanatically religious. Neither of them has a good grasp on reality.
