Dr. Sherman Jackson responds to an audience question regarding Gay Muslims and homosexuality in Islam. Clip from Cultivating an Indigenous Muslim Culture part of the Shuruq 2009 Islam Awareness series held at New York University in April 2009.
some generous comments pretty much embracing homosexuals yet maintaining the moral high ground.
we see how the Christians have handled it - my parents own church had a big split when the question came up.
how is this being responded to in your community?
a good opportunity in this thread to have some actual dialog. homosexuals need to be embraced (although my personal prejudice makes me wary of it). I am opening up to this idea.

Is there a place for gay Muslims.
The bigger question we have around these parts is how do you get rid of one?

The biggest sign of a repressed homosexual is intense homophobia. Are you finally taking a baby step out of the closet?
Congrats.

^Lol.
The question is irrelevant. A place will be made for gay muslims. Along with gay Christians and gay athiests and gay idiots and really gay Gays.
And of course I simply love that I have to point out to you that in a 'modern' society we cannot simply choose not to give a place to a subset of the population. They have a place, whether you choose to recognize their viability as human beings worthy of civil rights or not.

There's a place for them. The same place we all go when we die, eternal black oblivion.

Eminent scholars of Islam, such as Sheikh ul-Islam Imam Malik, and Imam Shafi amongst others, ruled that Islam disallowed homosexuality and ordained capital punishment for a person guilty of it. Homosexual activity is a crime and forbidden in most Muslim-majority countries. In the Islamic regimes of Iran, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen, homosexual activity is punished with the death penalty. In Nigeria and Somalia the death penalty is issued in some regions. The legal punishment for sodomy has varied among juristic schools: some prescribe capital punishment; while other prescribe a milder discretionary punishment such as imprisonment. In some relatively secular Muslim-majority countries such as Indonesia, Jordan and Turkey this is not the case.
Iran is perhaps the nation to execute the largest number of its citizens for homosexual acts. Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, the Iranian government has executed more than 4,000 such people.
Stay away from Iran, Ahmad!

When gay Muslims die killing infidels, do they get gay virgins?

Girl on girl is still cool, though, right? Otherwise that would ruin my hashish-harem-in-some-isolated-tent-in-the-desert fantasy.

Your "maintaining the moral high ground" line pretty much prevented me from ever watching it.

If a gay muslim posts on the PC and no one likes him, do people respond seriously?
The bigger question we have around these parts is how do you get rid of one?
