Oh LichNet we just had a discussion about it, and some people hadn't heard about the series yet, and I'm like WTF? People (in the media, not me) have called it the most hyped TV show of all time...

So, if you haven't heard of the series, here is the best introduction to date:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OofPjpBVvEA&feature=player_embedded

If you're unfamiliar with the books, wtf is wrong with you? You're on this forum so you have at least a passing interest in fantasy, right? Then why not read the best fantasy series out there?

http://www.amazon.com/Game-Thrones-Song-Ice-Fire/dp/0553386794/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302308875&sr=8-1

Ya ya, I know, he takes awhile between books, but again, members of this forum should be used to waiting for things (monks rsn!). Surely waiting for a book is better than doing a Robert Jordan and writing 1200 pages in which nothing happens.

All I remember is a bunch of guys trudging through the snow chasing some bitch named Faile who was kidnapped by a bunch of indians. The bitch had been kidnapped in the previous 1200 page book, this book starts with them chasing, 4 days of chasing and 1200 pages later, the book ends, bitch is still a prisoner, and I say WTF? Resolve some shit..... (I'm talking about Wheel of Time Robert Jordan here people - not the insanely better Game of Thrones, for those who didn't get the reference.)

Lots of Daenerys see-through and topless in the series, nice.

I found they captured the feel of the book really well. The atmosphere was top notch.

Tyrien (The Imp) looked a bit too 'pretty' for my tastes, but otherwise I thought it was very well casted.

A promising start!

There are only so many midget actors. That guy has been in a ton of stuff.

Uh, there is going to be a third season of Spartacus? The first was 10 episodes, second was 6, so the third will be 2 episodes? Isn't that called a made for TV movie at that point?

Some Rogue

The second season was just a filler while the actor who played Spartacus recovered from cancer I think it was. He had a relapse so they ended up recasting him. It should be a full season when it starts back up.

Crixus: Do not address me as you would a recruit.
Spartacus: Then do not act like one.
Crixus: Words of import, from the mighty Spartacus. Bringer of rain, slayer of Theokoles. As if you stood against him on your own! Without my aid, you would have nothing. Not even your miserable life.
Spartacus: True. Yet here I stand, and there you sit.
Crixus: You know shit, about being a champion. Of being a true brother. You're only playing at your own part. And one day the game will end.
Spartacus: Death comes to us all. Press me again, and you shall find yours.

As much as I've enjoyed the sex and violence of the series I've been very pleased with the dialogue. I am sorry to read about Andy Whitfield he played an awesome Spartacus. Lets hope they recast someone just as good. Get well soon Andy!

04-20-2011, 02:19 PM
In case you guys missed it, GoT was picked up for a full second season (might be 10 episodes, might be 12).

Executive producers have said that if they get renewed for 3rd + 4th, they'll split Storm of Swords in half, then split the combined Feast/Dance with Dragons for seasons 5 and 6 (they were supposed to be one whole book in the first place).

By that time GRRM would probably have finished book six (considering he already has chapters written for it, one would hope). That would be season 7. So it's possible that George could finish the book series at the exact perfect time, assuming the TV show lasts that long.

Should be interesting.

I've read the books, they are the best books I've ever read, oh any genre. The plot is incredibly complex, twisting, he weaves it all together brilliantly.

Better comparison than the Spartacus (which is the equivalent of a happy meal) one would be to Lost, or HBO's Rome, or maybe Battlestar Galactica on how the plot transcends the fact that it was scifi. HBO themselves say it is a cross between Lord of the Rings and The Sopranos.

There has of course been just one episode, so I'm basing this on the books, and what I've read from people who have seen the first 6 episodes (some reviewers got them). The show is following the books faithfully so far so I've no reason to think it will not be as good as the books, plot wise.

It does start slow, there is such a large stage to setup that it starts slow. The books started slow, the show starts a little slow. I think they should have made the premier 2 hours.

I can see this show becoming a water cooler show. Every Monday people go to work and ask "Did you see what HBO did to those poor people last night?" X got his head cut off, Y got his head cut off. Z got stabbed. A got raped. B got killed, had his corpse desecrated with an animal and was tossed in a river. C got her throat slit. D got poisoned. E got his hand cut off. F got strung up. G got strung up, stripped, and beaten in a church. H got molten metal poured on his head. And I? I became a monk, wtf?

The King is my homie even if his wifes a bitch.

The little sister is a cute little rag doll.

The horse tribe princess is hot as fuck.

Her brother is the kind of villain every good story needs.

The dire wolves are a really cool twist.

So far I am into it. I can tell that some things do not translate well from the book but it seems like they are really trying to be true to it. I’ll keep watching and I may just go get the first book.

It is true HBO series though. I love the colorless and dirty look they have given the out door scenes contrasted with the luxuriously warm tones of the interiors such as the horse tribe leader’s tent. Really makes a tent in a harsh land inviting.

PS. And whats up with the dragons eggs, yo? Yeah yeah, PLOT-TWIST!

My only complaint, and one I never thought I'd make about a movie/show adaptation of a book, is that they're following it too closely. Instead of copying the author's habit of spending one chapter on each character and going around the circle, they should skip around a bit. Do 2-3 chapters on Jon, then go back and do 2-3 on the horse people, etc. The constant bouncing around every couple minutes is jarring enough when I know the story. It must be nuts for people who never read the books.

It may be the director of the past two episodes. I have never read the books and yes it is as you say “bouncy” story wise which makes it a bit hard to follow. I expect that with any new series though so the weight of the acting and scenery makes for a compelling enough backdrop whilst getting settled into the story.

So far the direction, acting and production seems good and I would even go so far as to say HBO has found a great measure of balance between art and soft porn.

possibly spoilerly, if you haven't read, don't read.

Ya but then Ned was all like "Her name was Wyla" but... that is almost an anagram, so I don't know.

I wonder if in future seasons HBO will show the flashbacks in the books, to start to clue people in. I told my wife about R+L=J, thinking it'd help cultivate her interest to know the potential of J. I wonder if that might not be a good thing for the TV show. Let the audience know, at some point, assuming it is the truth.

Sort of like the beginning of Lord of the Rings Return of the King (or the end of StarWars Episode III for that matter), starts with Smeagol and Deagol fishing. Maybe Season 4 or 5 can start with L in labor and the baby is born and R hold him and asks L "What shall we name him?" and L says "J" and R says "A good name for a future blankety blank". End scene, cut to J back in present time, on duty.

They did this same sort of plot device in Lost all the time too.

Re: V's post concerning dream sequences/flashbacks.

I'm VERY surprised we didn't see any of Bran's dreams while he was unconscious. Same with Dany's dreams--yet. There's certainly still time to show them...

But it's an interesting choice to NOT show them, or to NOT go with any flashbacks. That's really the whole thing about the books; all the information we have about Robert's Rebellion is secondhand... we never SEE it. I would actually be fine for the same thing to happen in the TV series, even if we lose the many interior monologues from characters referencing back to prior past events.

I would like to see some dreams, though, or prophecy; we'll see what they do when Dany gets to the house of the undying ones.

Drew

My guess is the only flashback we see this season is the battle at the trident (love to see what they do with Robert's antler helm armour and Rhaegar's black plate, and Robert best use a warhammer).

A lot of midgets tend to kill themselves. A disproportionate amount, actually. Hervé Villechaize off of Fantasy Island. I think somebody from the Time Bandits did. I suppose they must get really sad about like... being really little and that... people looking at them, laughing at them, calling them names. You know, "short arse". There's another famous midget. I can't believe they've only shown him this once. For all Jon's screen time, Ghost, his constant companion, has been shown twice, and only once since being found.

The audience is probably a little confused on that. Would it have been that hard to have the dog act like a dog and follow Jon around.

I haven't read the books, but the wolves aren't confusing to me. They obviously made a big deal about granting each of them one when they were found in the first place, and then serving as guardians, for a reason.

You're assuming that they didn't intend to have it shot that way. Maybe they didn't want the DIRE WOLF in every scene Jon is in. It probably is expensive to have an animal handler available for every episode.

Thats the point though, it isn't a wild animal, it is a dog, Jon isn't in many scenes, most were probably filmed the same day/week. And in the book Ghost (and all the other direwolves) are ALWAYS around. The children are rarely without them (except Sansa and Arya, obviously). In fact, Catelyn tells Eddard, relating how Summer saved Bran, to make sure the kids are never without their wolves (prior to that she didn't like the idea of them as pets). And Eddard has to tell her that he had to kill Lady and Nymeria ran away and she gives him the "you fucked up" look like only a wife can.

That the wolves only appear on screen when they have acting to do makes them seem like plot devices of convenience. Like, you know in old cartoons where something in the background is colored different than the rest of the background, so you know Scooby Doo is going to interact with it in some way?

I don't even post that often anymore, so I'm not sure where you're getting that I'm always attacking you. Maybe I just don't agree with your point of view and you take it personally. In this case, I just believe that not everything in the books, dare I say, needs to be in the series.

As for the raven comment, it was just a joke since the ravens seem to be brought quite often (it's like the stupid owls in Harry Potter). You brought up horses but I can't bring up ravens since horses are not anyone's pets either. Whatever. Joke failed on my part, mea culpa.

I don't care if they leave out things from the books (well, that much), I care about the show being successful. Leaving the wolves out except when they have to bite something smacks of deus ex machina. It may have been convenient for producers, but conveniently filmed shows != good shows. I would be critiqing this decision even if the books did not exist, perhaps even more so as then I would have assumed the show writers simply invented the wolves to solve a few various plot threads. It isn't about being a faithful adaptation, it is about being good TV.

Fuck you pk!

Alright so since I last posted I read the first book and am halfway through book 2.

Fucking episode 8... so much fantastic setup and days away from the next episode. The Drogo fight was epic. Robb's story arc has been difficult as he had to sit around Winterfell for most of the season, and I really wanted it to be a bigger deal when he stepped into those shoes, but I'm sure the next two episodes will help me with that. I shed a tear for Syrio. And Hodor's shlong.

Last episode was a bit disappointing. Serious lack of boobage in that one, kind of feel let down.

I think the series is very well done, haven't read any books on it. I am not the type of person to have an attention span for television shows or following a series, either.

Also, I had no idea how much doggystyle was going on in the medieval ages, always thought it would be plain ol' missionary. Thank goodness for tv.

Sean Bean is the fucking man.

British actor Sean Bean was stabbed in the arm following a spat over a Playboy model outside a bar in London.

The "Lord Of The Rings" and "Game of Thrones" star was apparently attacked outside the Hill Bar and Brasserie in Camden, northwest London late Sunday, British newspaper The Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Witnesses said Bean, 52, suffered a cut arm and a bruised face but did not want to go to hospital. He instead walked back into the bar and ordered another drink.

He has promised that he'll finish writing the saga in time for the television series to keep up the pace of 1 book per season.

That means he has about 5-6 years to both finish book 6 (we can assume he has started it) and write book 7.

I think he can do it! Er...maybe.

Caught up on the episodes. Still disapointed and feel like the novels were dumbed down for teevee. Only Tyrion and Littlefinger...maybe Daenerys feel like true echoes of the powerful personalities that the books presented. Mmmm Littlefinger. DAYUM I would break that man. And he's not even really hot but his brain is like DAYUM. Yah know? YAH KNOW? No? Okay.

Well I've decided I'm never watching another adaptation of a great novel again ever. Ever. Until I finish this one.

Dumbed down how? Of course they're going to have to cut some things out and make a few changes, there are time constraints after all. I don't think they could possibly do a better job than what they're doing now.

I have never seen a better cast adaptaptation of a novel, TV show, movie, or otherwise. The sets and costuming (Armor, weaponry, etc) are amazing. The acting has ranged from solid to excellent. Scripting, fight scenes, special effects (When needed) all are blockbuster movie quality. An HBO series is the best possible scenario for these books to play out, and they are doing a damn fine job.

Ryvicke
06-17-2011, 12:04 PM
I would say the show is damned entertaining, but when it comes to the best series that HBO has done: Deadwood, The Wire, The Sopranos it's falling well short. The books paint an immensely harsh world, with so much death and rape and war that is counterbalanced by really complex political alliances, etc. that the show doesn't have time to explore. There's also a lot of actual joy, or at least humor, in the books that isn't exactly translating.

My example is episode 9, I expected them to at least show the sneaky sortie that Robb leads to capture Jamie, while also making it clear to the viewer that holding Jamie would assure Ned's life. Even if it's more tragic when Joffrey surprisingly kills Ned, I think viewers need at least to see some victories for the "good guys" from time to time. I know a few people I convinced to watch are definitely into the show but at the same time are like 'wow, dude. That shit is BLEAK." The books I wouldn't describe as bleak.

Anyhow, blah blah. The acting, sets and effects are amazing. It's no Deadwood, which was fucking bleak and hilarious and unforgiving.
