Were any other of HBO's series based off a series of novels? I think Trueblood is one. Does that faithfully follow the series/events/etc?

Not at ALL. And that's a good thing.

Trueblood is very very loosely based on the books and I agree with Nachos that that is a good thing.
Band of Brothers was a book.

Peter Dinklage deserves an Emmy for playing Tyrion.
Anyone else who loves Peter Dinklage should check out his film "The Station Agent" which is all kinds of awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTGUP0JK1cU

The Station Agent is awesome. Battered women flees to live with hobo midget!
Personally, I think Mark Addy gave the best performance of the first season. Dinklage is cool, and I've seen The Station Agent, but I honestly think his size has become an asset for him, he has novelty, as a serious actor.
But Mark Addy, he had to do angry, bawdy, and tearful all in a single scene, and he nailed it. Plus, Tyrion has better material in later seasons, Robert Baratheon is dead.
Great first season. Now we have to wait a year and almost all the major actors are dead. Lets hope they do it justice.

Maybe not main to the entire series, but they were significant characters in the first season. Dothraki chief, lord of Winterfell, and the king? They weren't backdrops either. :)

I agree they were significant characters, but I disagree with the statement "almost all the major actors are dead". The only really MAJOR death, in my opinion, was Stark.

Why?
Not enough dudes blowing other dudes.
And I think Sean Bean gave an awesome performance as the totally out of his element Hand of the King. He is confused by all the politics, that honor isn't anywhere in the top 50 things needed to live in Kingslanding and even more confused by his friend the once great warrior. But hopefully everyone will get recognized really well done by all the actors.

Yes sorry I meant the characters but also they were fairly big name actors. Not Kahl Drogo but hes pretty familiar on the TV set. What is left is the Actress playing the queen and the lady playing Cat. All the kids are newbies, the one playing the princess is fairly new to my experiences I haven't seen her in much. They are doing a great job and hopefully will keep it going.

I felt the last 2 episodes felt very 'rushed', and it seemed they tried to cram too many events into too little time.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them, but I think it would've come across better had they extended it 2 more episodes.

Jaime was played fantastically. Especially in Episode 10 with the exchange with Caitlyn Stark.
Tyrion was great. Dinklage nails it.
Jon Snow has been just about the best character portrayal, but all of the stark kids are good.
I was really impressed with Joffrey's costuming during the bard/Starks head scene.
Til Spring 2012, but we do have book 5 coming out very soon.

I haven't read the books so I can't speak to that effect, but yeah, probably my favorite character in the show. His accent isn't the best, but it'd be better than my attempt at a British accent, lol.

To be fair, they're not portraying British characters so the accents are similar enough to make me happy. If I'm not wrong, the episodes probablydont take a year to film, but they are waiting on the author to finish the last two books of the series. They may be buying him time and building hype at the same time.

Oh yeah I understand that, but they all have British accents and it seems like he's the only one trying to fake one. Still though, it doesn't take away any enjoyment of his character.

Then honestly, they shouldn't have started up the series if they were going to do these wait times for the author to finish it in the first place. The second book is already done, get the season done. I don't see why the public has to suffer because the author is slow. :)

Pretty much every show on the planet does one season a year, what are you bitching about? It's less than a year away.

I guess my only complaint is that they could have done 2 to 4 more episodes, so it didn't at times feel at times as if some of it was skimmed over lightly. The books have a lot of meat to them and you can really make use of that rich material to really flesh out a series like this.
Over all though I loved the whole thing.

I agree that the show could've used 12 episodes rather than 10. It was new, however and they didn't know how it would take. Since it appears to be a hit, hopefully the next seasons will be expanded.
Season 2 will only be 10 eps. GRRM wanted 12. We'll see what season 3 brings.
It doesn't take them a year to film the episodes, it takes them about 6 weeks of filming. But prior to filming they have to scout locations, build sets, make costumes, hire actors, write scripts. Then after filming they have to do all the editing, music, effects, etc.
And in anycase, 1 season a year is pretty much the norm for cable shows. Even with shows that don't need to do all that stuff because there isn't magic and dragons and the settings don't change each season (requiring massive new sets), those shows still only do 1 season a year.
They start filming season 2 July 25th, and all the actors haven't even been hired yet.
Benioff and Weiss asked for 10 episodes. I think it kind of makes sense though, I'd say narrative wise less happens in ACOK than GOT. They are similar lengths. A storm of swords will have to be 15 episodes at least or split into two seasons.

It also doesn't mean I agree with it, since that wasn't always the case. And since channels like NBC, CW and Fox can manage to do 20+ shows per season, but channels like HBO can only do 10-12, it's annoying.

Has anyone heard who they will cast as Stannis?
Hopefully someone sufficiently Michael Ironsides-ish.
.... Boardwalk Empire did 12 episodes, that show got a little slow at times, they could have done 10. GoT felt hurried, they needed 12.

Regular TV can do 13-20 episodes but lets be honest they use standard sets or film in downtown NY. The stories are all the same and its either a doctor show, crime show, reality show so I would rather have 10 great episodes than 20 sad ones.

They want it to take a year or so between seasons. HBO now has three big hour-long dramas that cover almost a years worth of programming in Boardwalk Empire, True Blood and Game of Thrones.
I heard a rumor that Gerard Butler was being cast as Stannis for season 2. If true, that is awesome, he would be great.
edit to add: Just found a site that confirmed Stannis is going to be portrayed by someone named Stephen Dillane.
