View Full Version : Government Shutdown - All in favor say aye!

I have heard some people proclaim that they want to see a government shut down. Do you?

I do not. There are far to many people out there trying to make ends meet for politicians to be playing political games for the next election cycle.

I have a lot of friends in Afghanistan right now that aren't getting paid after tomorrow either, and IMO, it is a sad fucking day if you are putting your life on the line and not getting paid to protect the freedom of politicians bitchy speech.

That's pretty much the only reason I'm against it Sheikh. Quit paying the suits but don't stop paying my brothers and sisters in the Corps, or any other branch for that matter (except the Coast Guard they aren't even people! KIDDING).

The problem with things like the GI Bill, and things like my job, is that even if the money is already allocated, there are still government employees that have to make the transactions happen. If you have 800,000 federal workers not getting paid, how hard do you think they're going to be working to make sure anyone else gets paid?

I'm sure glad I'm not in Afghanistan as a contractor anymore to see how the soldiers react. Lots of them tend to hate contractors enough already, and rightfully so in many cases.

You know what the funny thing is, technically, Obama could just state that our armed forces are essential personal, and ensure they continue to get paid.

The repubs are morons for forcing this issue over riders, at the same time, dems are idiots for haggling over such small numbers at this point. This isn't the real fight for either of them. Basically, BOTH parties want to see a shutdown, cause they are both hoping the other party will take the brunt of the blame for it. Otherwise, one of the two would have already caved.

Besides, those policy riders the repubs want would only affect the rest of this years budget, dems would just throw them back into the 2012 budget anyway.

And while a week by week budget is no way to run ANYTHING, the big reason an extension won't happen unless a full budget is ready is cause of the troops. Dems do not want the troops paid during a shutdown. Hoping it will take some votes away from the repubs, which troops tend to lean more towards. Otherwise the dems would agree to a one week extension minus the riders, and continue to work on the issue.

Both parties are assholes for letting it get this far, but you really got to wonder why a budget wasn't done before elections, then after elections. They controlled both houses, they could have easily passed it. Instead they let this happen on purpose.

The Democrats have also shown how fiscally irresponsible they can be. Just because they're willing to compromise on this issue does nothing to impress me. Neither side is willing to make the choices that they should be making, the choices that would be right for this country. It all boils down to what they can do for themselves and their reelections.

Wait... so the democrats are demonstrating how irresponsible they can be by compromising on the budget?

When you say “neither side is willing to make the choices that they should be making; the choices that would be right for this country.” it sounds to me like you are talking strictly about the republicans who can’t seem to compromise and worry more about reelection.

I'm a government contractor myself. I wouldn't mind an extended weekend, but if this drags on for awhile, that would kinda suck. Rather not drain savings while they figure this out.

To not pay troops in harms way is totally wrong. Can't believe they are going to do that if this shutdown happens.

As far as the gi bill being halted, I hope not. I enjoy me free housing allowance every month for going to night classes. I'd like a source on that as well, because from what I heard, it would not be effected.

The veto's for putting another $12 billion in cuts to just keep the government open one week.

The Senate would pass a clean CR to keep the government open one week to keep negotiations going if needed. The House Republicans have said they will not agree to it.

But so is the president(and his family) and Senate. I personally think they shouldn't be getting paid during a shutdown. And even if they government wasn't shutting down I think their pay needs to be cut. There is no good reason why the president and other politicians should make more then the troops imo. Oh, I agree on that. I've posted on that before.

It was more of a comparison that to keep the government open a month previously, the Republicans had demanded $10 billion in cuts. To keep the government open another week, they were asking for another $12 billion.

Anyway, moot point, they reached a deal. Crisis averted until the debt limit vote comes.
