He's officially forming a committee to consider running for president.

This country was founded on freedom. We the people of the United States will take back our government. This is our country. Our founding fathers created it, Americans embraced it, Ronald Reagan personified it and Lincoln stood courageously to protect it. And that's why today I'm announcing the formation of an exploratory committee to run for president of the United States.

That's the best reason I've ever heard anybody give for running for president.

Why is forming an exploratory committee important?

Well first, it's important because it gets him media attention today. You may remember that Gingrich made a big deal about an "announcement" a few weeks ago. He was all set for media attention too. But then he realized that if he formed an exploratory committee, it would interfere with his business obligations, like paid speeches, Fox News commentator, etc. Gingrich changed his announcement to be that he was exploring forming an exploratory committee. It wasn't as impressive.

Second, it means that Pawlenty is about to start raising and spending money. Lots of money, if he can.

Exploratory committees have been around for a long time now and most, if not all, presidential candidates used them.

I doubt he has much of a chance though...

We call him Fees-a-Pawlenty around here. Anyone can make a "no new taxes" pledge work by shifting the burden to a plethera of fees and passing the buck to cities and counties.
