The main reason we went into Iraq was because of Iraq's oil, though that was not the publicly stated reason. The publicly stated reasons were eliminating WMDs, regime change, liberating Iraq, responding to 9/11, etc., but the main, unstated reason was oil.
If we had not gone into Iraq, what would have happened? It would have been exactly what happened in Tunisia and Yemen and what is happening now in Egypt. The Iraqi people, enlightened by inevitable information technology, would have liberated themselves. If we had allowed that to happen, then all of our publicly stated reasons for the war would have been eliminated without our having lifted one finger. That would have left Iraq's vast oil fields under the control of some democratically elected foreigner.
Thankfully, President George W. Bush had the foresight to act before any of that could happen. History is already showing that Bush was right.
