I relapsed!

PB, that always isn't the case. Addictions form by sort of creeping up on you. The only thing that *IS* weak willed about all of it is trying any substance in the first place. The best way I can describe an addiction forming is this:

First it's just a thing you do Friday nights.

A week or so later it's Friday and Saturday.

A bit later it's Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Maybe not to long after that you throw in Thursday and Tuesday.

Before long its an everday thing. You can creep on you and screw you before you can say, "OH SHIT IM PWNED!"

Then explain to me why I am not an alcoholic. I out drank my housemates on a consistent basis. We had parties almost every single night of the week. There were very few people that partied as hard and as long as I did back in the day.. yet I never became 'addicted' to it.

While addictive, alcohol is not as addictive as other substances. It is not as easy to form a habit to and it reacts with the body much differently.

Not to mention, it's also body chemestry. You can't apply a substance to one body and expect it to effect another in a similiar way as far as physical dependencies. I am sure if there was somebody else in your position, there could be a chance that they would develope a physical addiction. Say for instance if they had a history of alcoholism in the family.

It's usually a completely different story as far as hard drugs are concerned.

Which in turn would destroy his career and liscense not to mention those under his narcotic influenced care.

I only read up to page 5 or 6 so far. I'd like to bring up just a couple of things:

You -do- know, Stanley, that you can feel that euphoria without any drugs at all, right? The whole "seeing my veins" and being cognizant of every firing synapse and nerve ending response kinda thing. You can feel all of it. Without drugs, or herbs, or any other form of external substance.

If you don't know, and if this is that -reason- for your "need" for drugs, I urge you to explore various meditation techniques. Forget the usual "ohm I am relaxed ohm" stuff..we're talking mind-blowing highs that you can experience, that last as long as you want them to, with absolutely no affect when it's over (other than just a general state of being relaxed and ready to continue your day as usual).

If you're doing these benzos because you're addicted, and just pretending you're doing it for the high, then stop pretending. Here's a challenge for ya: Try meditation instead of pills for two weeks. If you're only addicted to the "feeling" and not to the drug itself, it'll be a piece of cake for ya, right? No sweat, no worries, a walk in the proverbial park.

The second thing is to address whoever said they don't get it about addiction. People are sometimes prescribed medications by their physicians for legitimate reasons. There is no way of knowing that the very first pill you take will or won't stick you in an endless cycle. Even "addictive personalities" aren't always subject to becoming addicted to this or that medication. And even strong-willed people can become addicts after their very first dose.

I have to take narcotic painkillers (percosett or vikoden, depending on the doctor) a few times every year for debilitating spinal problems. Nasty things to become addicted to, and fortunately I haven't fallen prey. But I can see how easy it would be. Not being in pain is an amazing thing when you live with pain 24/7 for over 20 years. But because of my fear of becoming addicted, I only ask my doctor for a week's worth, the few times during the year when it's intolerable to go without.. and I take half the dose that the doctor recommends. Even still, I'm flirting with danger. At any moment during those weeks, I could become addicted. Physically addicted, to the point where not taking a pill would be MUCH worse than living with the pain I live with before taking any meds at all.

Sure, meds can sometimes be a fun high. But I'd rather take them to perform the function they're intended to perform - enjoy the high they provide as a side-effect, and not as the purpose for taking them...

and get my intentional high through meditation techniques instead.

Things like this upset me, because I go out of my way to never use anything that could be come addictive. I don't drink, use pain pills (except for right before my back surgury, but i didn't take any after). The reason I don't touch the stuff is because my mother was an addict.

She was an alchoholic as long as I could remember, and the last ten years of her life she was also addicted to pain pills. We tried to get her to face it, and she had an excuse for everything. Sometimes I wondered if I hadn't moved away if I could have done more, but as it was she died two years ago when her heart gave out from all the abuse.

Addicts who claim 'they are only hurting themselves' are so full of shit I want to beat the everloving shit out of them. To this day I still cry. She loved me, she wanted to be a grand-mother so much. But she will never see Kiara grow up. pain pills were prescribed for her as her back and knees gave out. She would take more and more, because they just wouldn't work anymore as she built up an extreme tolerance. She didn't even get the hint when doctors stopped treating her. I didn't realize how bad it was until after her death, when I found the letters from them telling her to seek help. Why why why why didn't they force her into rehab?? or contact her family?

So to read about someone, who had the CHANCE to stop, and brag about going back, it broke my heart.

Addiction is a monster, and I feel bad for people who are fighting it, but I respect them.

Stanley, if I ever saw you, I'd spit on you. You aren't even worth the effort of a slap.

Please, I've had my experience with drugs and how addictive they can be (heroin and methamphetamine), but never did I go around saying how glad I was if / when I relapsed.
