View Full Version : Government Tracking Us by Our Cell Phones!

There's proof!

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Where is South Carolina's governor?

The lieutenant governor doesn't know, and neither does a state senator who's a close confidante. Even Gov. Mark Sanford's wife is in the dark.

And while his staff said they knew where he was, a spokesman said he wasn't aware that any of them had spoken with the governor since Thursday. Sanford's wife said she hasn't heard from him in several days, including Father's Day.

Sanford's last known location was near Atlanta late last week. A mobile telephone tower there picked up a signal from his phone, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Since then, the governor's state and personal phones had been turned off, and Sanford had not responded to phone or text messages, a source said. Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.

COLUMBIA, S.C., June 22 (UPI) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who had been out of contact with state officials for four days, was hiking on the Appalachian Trail, aides said Monday.

There are two disturbing things about this.

First, I knew it! When those cell phones first started coming out, I told everybody not to get one because the government would use them to track us, but nobody listened. Well this proves I was right. Notice how the article says that some cell phones can't be tracked when they're turned off. But most of them probably can be tracked when turned off.

Second, a man should be able to leave his job and family on Father's Day weekend without having to tell everybody where he's going. And they shouldn't be able to get the police to spy on him with his cell phone.

Many people think Gov. Sanford would be a good Republican candidate for President in 2012. He should definitely run and put a stop to cell phone tracking.

Hey, a not-retarded post by Clyde! I like those.

...Well, actually, it was just the first part.

But yeah, Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation recommends not having a cell phone because of the tracking as it is a serious privacy issue.

Second, a man should be able to leave his job and family on Father's Day weekend without having to tell everybody where he's going. And they shouldn't be able to get the police to spy on him with his cell phone.

This is where the stupidity starts. Maybe a normal man can, but a governor needs to run shit. And not telling your wife where the hell you are going is a serious dick move, and not the kind of dick she likes. Your kids on the other hand...depends whether or not they have moved out.

Many people think Gov. Sanford would be a good Republican candidate for President in 2012. He should definitely run and put a stop to cell phone tracking.

I think I remember reading a good article about him at one point so I'm not completely opposed to the idea, but I need to know what his political ideologies are more. However, he shouldn't completely stop cell phone tracking, for two reasons.

1. If someone has an outstanding warrant, the police should be able to use it to track someone down.
2. If someone's cell phone--or the whole person--goes missing, we should use it to track someone down quickly.

Number two was what was going on in this situation. Though I don't know if there are any safeguards in place to insure that cell phone tracking is only used for those two purposes.

You don't just punch in a random cell phone number and track them. It's only for numbers on a shared account, which I think should happen considering the number of kids that have cell phones these days. I think you can opt to allow anyone to track you via that way, but I've never looked into that.

I was pretty certain all mobile devices had internal gps for the last few years.. I thought it was one of the FCC codes or some bullshit.. It's why some soda machines are set with cell phone transmitters, the ones that take credit.. it was one of the backup security devices if the machine were ever stolen it could be recovered quickly.

Stimulated by the events of 11 September 2001, the demand for enhanced 911 (e911) emergency calling capabilities, pushed forward GPS tracking technology in cell phones. At the end of 2005, all cell phone carriers were required to provide the ability to trace cell phone calls to a location within 100 meters or less.

To comply with FCC requirements, cell phone carriers decided to integrate GPS technology into cell phone handsets, rather than overhaul the tower network. However the GPS in most cell phones are not like those in your handy GPS receiver that you take hiking. Most cell phones do not allow the user direct access to the GPS data, accurate location determination requires the assistance of the wireless network, and the GPS data is transmitted only if a 911 emergency call is made.

So, in general, you can not track someone using their cell phone, unless the person you want to track has the right kind of cell phone, connected to the right network, with the right service.

Hi, Google Latitude.

Anyway, the "some cell phones" argument I'm pretty sure should be worded as "all cell phones can be tracked when they're off." But not when the battery is out.

Using tracking devices to locate alleged criminals? Not exactly my idea of a good plan. Don't forget that cops are people too, and they fuck up a lot of stuff when given the power to do it with.

I read an AP wire about 4 years ago about how the government had wiretapped these mafia guys cell phones. The interesting part was that they had listened in to their convos even without the phones being dialed by the mobsters. Apparently there's a backdoor of some sort where if the government has the appropriate wiretap they can push a signal to your phone to start broadcasting in your pocket even when the phone was "off" (phones don't really turn off, they just go in sleep mode anyway). I remember the FBI wasn't too keen on revealing this but the judge forced them to. According to the documents the only way to defeat this sort of surveillance was to physically remove your battery.

And on top of that, they were trying like hell to get it all working like 10 years ago to track drug dealers and all. Come on people, rub those two brain cells together, get a small spark and get a fricking clue. If the government wants to track you, they will. Period. End of story. The only thing you can do is either be unknown, in other words they don't know they want to track you, or leave the grid, which still isn't 100% effective, after all, how many cases of "track down this bum" are there in cop shows?

Why do you think that people who disagree with the practice think they are going to be tracked?

That is like saying that, "It's funny how most people who oppose high marginal rates think they're ever going to make enough to actually be effected by them."

Sometimes people just don't think certain things should be done, regardless of whether they will ever be done to them.

I just saw on the news that the guy admitted to "having an affair with a friend in Argentina." I don't know any additional details since there are no speakers on the TVs at work.

Hope that pussy was worth his political career...

Gov. Mark Sanford admitted today that his secret trip to Argentina over Father's Day weekend was to visit a woman he is having an affair with.

"I have developed a relationship with what started as a dear dear friend from Argentina. It began very innocently as I expect many of these things do, just casual email back and forth," Sanford said. "But here recently this last year developed into something much more."

Asked if Sanford was separated from his wife, he said "I don't know how you want to define that. I"m here and she's there. I guess in a formal sense we are not."

Sanford said his wife has known about the affair and they have been working through it for the past five months. "What I did was wrong, period. End of story," Sanford said.

Sanford arrived in the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport this morning, having wrapped up a seven-day visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina, he said then. Sanford said he had not been hiking along the Appalachian Trail, as his staff said in a Tuesday statement to the media.

Sanford's whereabouts had been unknown since Thursday, and the mystery surrounding his absence fueled speculation about where he had been and who's in charge in his absence. His emergence Wednesday ended the mystery.

Sanford, in an interview with The State, said he decided at the last minute to go to the South American country to recharge after a difficult legislative session in which he battled with lawmakers over how to spend federal stimulus money.

Sanford said he had considered hiking on the Appalachian Trail, an activity he said he has enjoyed since he was a high school student.

"But I said 'no' I wanted to do something exotic," Sanford said "... It's a great city."

Sanford, in a brief interview in the nation's busiest airport, said he has been to the city twice before, most recently about a year and half ago during a Commerce Department trip.

Sanford said he was alone on the trip. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.

Sanford, who was wearing a blue and white button down shirt and brown denim pants, said he left for Buenos Aires on Thursday night from Columbia Metropolitan Airport and had originally planned to come back tomorrow.

Media reports said a SLED SUV the governor drove that night was spotted in the airport's parking lot.

Sanford's spokesman Joel Sawyer declined to immediately comment to The Associated Press, and the governor did not return cell phone messages.

Sanford planned a news conference at 2 p.m. Wednesday at his office in Columbia.

Critics slammed his administration for lying to the public.

"Lies. Lies. Lies. That's all we get from his staff. That's all we get from his people. That's all we get from him," said state Sen. Jake Knotts, R-West Columbia. "Why all the big cover-up?"

Trying to drive along the coast could frustrate a weekend visitor to Argentina. In Buenos Aires, the Avenida Costanera is the only coastal road, and it's less than two miles long. Reaching coastal resorts to the south requires a drive of nearly four hours on an inland highway with views of endless cattle ranches. To the north is a river delta of islands reached only by boat.

A spokesman for Argentina's immigration agency wouldn't comment Wednesday on whether Sanford entered the country, citing privacy laws.

The governor said he cut his trip short after his chief of staff, Scott English, told him his trip was gaining a lot of media attention and he needed to come back.

When asked why his staff said he was on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford replied, "I don't know."

Sanford later said "in fairness to his staff," he had told them he might go hiking on the Appalachian Trial.

Sanford said he decided not to return via the Columbia airport to avoid the media. The State Media Company was the only media who greeted Sanford this morning.

"I don't know how this thing got blown out of proportion," Sanford said.

Sanford said he has taken adventure trips for years to unwind. He has visited such places as the coast of Turkey, the Greek Isles and South America. He was with friends sometimes and sometimes by himself.

"I would get out of the bubble I am in," Sanford said.

Sanford said the legislative session was a difficult one for him, particularly losing the fight over whether he should accept stimulus $700 million in stimulus money he wanted lawmakers to spend on debt instead of urgent budget needs.

"It was a long session and I needed a break," Sanford said.

After a brief conversation with a reporter, Sanford was escorted away by an aide.

That was fast: The Republican Governors Association just announced that Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour -- already "in line" to take the chairmanship of the RGA -- has assumed it.

"As a former RNC chairman and one of the best governors in the country, no one is better positioned to takeover as RGA chairman than Governor Barbour," executive director Nick Ayers said in a statement.

Barbour is also a 2012 contender who sees the virtue of keeping his profile, for now, comfortably low, and one of the best-respected political minds in the Republican Party.
