The Supreme Court hinted (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/23/us/23scotus.html) today that the portion of the Voting Rights Act that requires some states (Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and parts of Virginia) to get prior clearance from the Justice Department before changing any laws or practices may be unconstitutional.

I agree with the court. There is no reason today why some states, but not all of them, are subject to these time consuming and expensive procedures. The same rules should apply to everybody.

It was a signal to Congress to do something before the court does it for them. Even the activist liberal judges agreed.
