View Full Version : Palin Accepts Letterman Apology

In a statement to FOXNews.com early Tuesday, the Alaska governor said, "Of course it's accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve."
"Letterman certainly has the right to 'joke' about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction," Palin said. "This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America's Right to Free Speech - in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect."

I don't know when I have ever heard such a gracious acceptance of a deserved apology. And thank goodness for the military!

I like Letterman, but I think he at least was idiotic in not figuring out which daughter was at the Yankees game before making the really stupid joke. He should have just apologized for it last week.. but I guess then this wouldn't be getting them both the attention they crave so much.

He did apologize last week. Last Wednesday. This was his second apology. I guess they got all the media whoring they thought it was worth then decided to "accept" the apology.

I'm sorry.. you obviously don't understand what an apology is, though it's not surprising. I blame your parents.
He apologized last night... anything previously said was for ratings and publicity.

Why was his apology last week (which sounded no less sincere than this one, from what I can remember of it) for ratings and publicity, but his apology this week an actual apology? I'm not saying you're wrong, but i'd like to know your reasoning.

I'm sorry, you obviously can't address anyone without resorting to childish insults. Really, though, you lived up to my expectations. I'm quite surprised you didn't make a "Your momma" joke or call me "boy."
Anything said by either party involved in this entire debacle was "for ratings and publicity," unless you think a knocked up 17 year old (who is now what? 19?) is above the fray for jokes about her (obvious) miserable failure in the "abstinence only" program. People should not expect to parade and market their family yet keep them insulated from public opinion at the same time. Its a two way street, and she catapulted herself and her model family into the spotlight. She should be woman enough to deal with crude jokes. Oh wait, that's right, she was whoring for attention.

When you apologize, isn't the minimum at least using the term "sorry"?
Here is the real one:

Ahahaha, I didn't see that, just read the articles on it last week. That was pretty funny. C'mon, he was obviously joking about the 18 year old who did get knocked up and not the 14 year old, and it's pretty sad he had to clarify that.

I thought it was in poor taste.. but I've always been of the mind that the kids should be off limits. And you are right.. obviously he was referring to the 18 year old kid.. but since she wasn't at the game and the 14 year old was.. he merely offered an opportunity for Sarah to strike back and turn the tables. It would have been a stupid joke had it been off the cuff.. but it's a joke that is written for him, checked and then written on queue cards... which makes it an idiotic mistake and due an apology.

True true, he should get some new fact checkers since the ballgame thing is something they should have known.
But yeah, I think kids are fair game when the parents parade them around for a year while campaigning. Or outside of politics, if say a celebrity did that with their kids for the attention, it would make them fair game, etc. Not everything is always about politics!!!11

At what age is a person allowed to be targeted by late night comedians, if not 18? Please also keep in mind that this particular person has accepted an ambassadorship for a multi-million dollar foundation, doesn't that of itself make her part of the public sphere?

I just want to say I stand completely for free speech in this instance, as well as in others.
I could give a rat's ass what a comedian says, nor about whom they say it. It is comedy, and comedy is supposed to be edgy, dangerous, uncomfortable and to make us think.
If you find what a comedian says to be not suited to your taste, then don't listen to them. If you think they have broken some decency law (most of which I would likely disagree with), report them. If it behooves you to act, then boycott the corporations, venues, stations and others that allow (and/or support) the performance.
For me it was just a poorly written joke that was at the forefront of liberal thinking ("Bash Palin any way you can."). I didn't find it particularly funny, but I also do not feel it deserved the media-driven controversy nor apology.

Beyond that, he was referring to an adult, not a little girl. Get over it.

So you wouldn't have a problem with Rush or Beck or any other conservative, making fun of Obama's kids? The Obamas have paraded those kids around enough, fitting your criteria.
I would have the same problem with them being made fun of.

I don't think Letterman should have apologized.
I've never really cared what late night talk show hosts have said in their jokes. They have pretty much been equal opportunity offenders. Jay Leno made fun of Clinton at least as much as he did Bush. These guys are already making fun of Obama on a nightly basis.
Making fun of public figure children...eh. Is it classy? No. Does it REALLY matter? I don't think so. Palin can retort back (which she did), and if the kid really cares, I'm sure the press will put her ass on TV too. Like it has already been mentioned in this thread, it's not like she was an 8 year old. She's old enough to fight her own battles if she wants to, and with her mother's aid, she should be able to obtain enough spotlight to do so, should she choose to.
I just wasn't offended. Oh, and on topic: I think Palin's "acceptance" went way overboard. It's almost like the SNL skits of her.
It's like "Thanks for the apology, now let me just say <insert political buzzphrase>. <insert political buzzphrase>. <insert political buzzphrase>. <insert political buzzphrase>. <insert political buzzphrase>. <insert political buzzphrase>. <insert political buzzphrase>. <insert political buzzphrase>." Oh, and "pew, pew".

That said, Letterman did not specifically mention which daughter, and the only one that was with Palin at the Yankees game was 14. If you consider 14 "an adult" when it comes to sexual matters you better check the laws of your state again.

Which daughter was in New York, and which was in Alaska, during the Yankees game in question?
They left during the 6th inning anyway (the joke was about the 7th).
It was a poorly worded joke, with bad fact-checking. It allowed Palin to take the opportunity to get a another 15 minutes, and for Letterman to further boost his ratings above O'Brien.

Nope, not really, if they'd done something worthy of it. If Obama was the one staunchly against sex ed and for abstinence ed only, and one of his daughters got knocked up in HS, i'd laugh just as hard at the jokes made about her/the Obamas.

I'm not saying it's a good joke. But how many people do you suppose knew which daughter she went to the game with before they made a stink about it? My guess is <10% of the population. So who do you suppose 90+% of the population thought it was referring to?

Firstly, Dennis Miller is NOT a comedian. He's a worthless douchebag who couldn't get a laugh off of his own material to save his life.

Dennis Miller - Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Miller)
Dennis Miller (November 3, 1953) is an American stand-up comedian, political commentator, actor, sports commentator, and television and radio personality. He is known for his ability to improvise critical assessments laced with pop culture references. He rose to fame as a cast member of Saturday Night Live in 1985, and subsequently hosted a string of his own talk shows on HBO, CNBC and in syndication. He currently hosts a daily, three-hour, self-titled talk radio program, nationally syndicated by Westwood One.
(bold my own)
On Letterman:
ZOMG BASIC MISUNDERSTANDING = ILLEGAL!
Read my posts. I see absolutely nothing wrong with anyone saying anything, and certainly do not consider it "ILLEGAL!".
It comes down to personal preferences, and personal decisions. I may dislike the speech of another, but i will defend their right to say whatever the hell they want.
Sure, it's Letterman's responsibility for the mix up, but you're an ignorant cunt if you can't see the obvious intention here.
So you agree that the joke was poorly done and badly fact-checked. I agree.
I see no reason for the "ignorant cunt" profane reference.
He (or his staff) screwed up a joke, she took advantage, he apologized. Issue over.
