Carolina court orders governor to take US funds
By Michael Connor
MIAMI, June 4 (Reuters) - South Carolina's top court on Thursday ordered Governor Mark Sanford, a fierce critic of President Obama's economic stimulus program, to take $700 million in federal stimulus money.
The state Supreme Court's ruling likely ends a months-old dispute between the Republican governor and the state legislature, which had already incorporated the federal money into its education spending plans.
The court, in a written ruling handed down in Columbia, South Carolina, said the state legislature had sole authority in South Carolina for appropriating government funds,
"While we recognize and respect Governor Sanford's sincerely held beliefs ..., those convictions do not alter the ministerial nature of the legal duty now before him," the justices said.
Sanford has said he would abide by the court's ruling.
Sanford had argued that Obama's stimulus spending was fiscally irresponsible, and he initially refused to apply for $700 million allocated to the state.
But South Carolina's Republican-controlled legislature disagreed and even overrode a Sanford veto of the portion of the state budget using the federal money.
A spokesman for the governor was not immediately available to comment. (Editing by Leslie Adler)

PWNT! If he doesn't need the 700 million, let's FORCE HIM TO TAKE IT AND SPEND IT!
The only one pwnt here Daniel, was the taxpayers and their children.. and their children's children.
Pwnt indeed.

Huh. Well, isn’t that why he should in fact take the money? For his constituents?

I know!
They were all like, "Brah, did you hear that we're not going to have school anymore because the all the scrilla the state legislature allocated to spend on public education was rejected by the governor? I'm totally going to spend the fall grinding my death knight. I LOVE not having to go to school."
Little did they know, the supreme court would find a way to fund their education afterall.
I bet they fucking hate those justices. PWNT.

It's about damn time.
Someone told me that when you look in the classifieds for jobs in SC there is nothing but advertisements for people trying to find work. Mostly prostitutes.
Maybe now we can make the epic climb from near last in unemployment, education, STDs, and ignorance. Good thing we got a head start with the stimulus funds.
Progress baby.

This is how it is in (what I think is) most of the country. Me, my girl, mother, and a few friends all got laid off in the past month.
Very well educated, hard working....all of us. Luckily we've all worked our asses off for a while. I consider myself on Funemployment now, I deserve it after paying everyone elses' SS and welfare for years.
Most jobs in the area are scamming-coldcalling-sales jobs.
Once again, luckily, I have the background to get a job that will support me. Some people don't have that.

That's what people will be saying about their respective states once the short term effect of the stimulus wears off and their taxes skyrocket.
Then the people who still don't get it will blame it on Bush.

Yea. I'm sure all those people who got jobs and\or an education out of the deal are going to be kicking themselves for having to pay more taxes.
Regardless if accepting the federal funds is a good idea or not, the Governor had no legal basis to refuse said funds and had his veto of the budget allocating said funds overrode.
The Govenor should have made a better case for refusing said funds. That being said, if the funds fail to achieve the goal in which they are being used, then he's got first right to say 'I told you so'.

"All those people" vs the people who lost their jobs due to this "Stimulus" being anything but actual Stimulus?
Pretty sure Obama is still in the red on jobs "saved" by his "Stimulus".

Who, exactly, lost their job *because* of the stimulus?

Jobless rate at 26 year high (9.4%) under your great leader.
(And before the "Bush did it!", look back on those that blamed Bush for "the largest job loss in the history of our country!" after the tech bubble burst, during our last recessionary down-cycle )

What was the supposed need for the stimulus? Oh, it was supposed to stimulate the economy and save jobs. It did neither, and never was intended to be that since the bulk of the stimulus hasn't even been released yet.
No one lost their jobs *because* of the stimulus.. don't be purposely stupid.

I'm not saying it has created jobs, but how in the world can you know what it did or did not do?
Not only is it temporally improbable that one could judge the effects of the stimulous, but I doubt one could separate the effects of the stimulous from the general economy such that they could prove that it did not create/save more jobs than would have been saved/created in its absence.
Unfortunately we don't have a "control" economy to run diagnostic tests against. If we did, I'm sure every leader would make more informed economic decisions.

I was pointing out it was ironic that you would say something like, "they just want to blame it on Obama."
It is rarely reasonable to unilaterally place blame on any one factor, whether it is a GOP administration or a Dem administration.

Ah. I thought you were hearkening back to defenses of Bush.
Economically I agree to a certain extent... the actions of Congresses and the Fed clearly matter a great deal in addition to various administrations.

First of all, it's stimulus. L2spellcheck kthx.
And do you even know what economic stimulus is? MOST of the 800 BILLION DOLLARS hasn't even been released.. nor is it going to be this year! What good is a stimulus package if most of the money isn't being released to do what it's supposed to do.. which is stimulate the economy?
It was wrong when Bush did it (which I opposed) and it's even more wrong when Obama did it (like it's some fucking contest to see who can fuck our economy up the worse)
