Former Washington DC Mayor Marion Barry -- now a member of the city council -- says black people in Washington DC are going to start a "civil war" if the city council decides to do more on the issue of homosexual "marriage" than it has already done. Against the lone dissent of Barry, the city recently passed a law recognizing homosexual "marriages" if those "marriages" are performed in a state that normally recognizes homosexual "marriages."

Good for Marion Barry! With decent and sincere people like Barry leading the cause to save marriage, I know that we will ultimately prevail against teh homosexual agenda.

So black people are all for civil rights... As long as they are about race (specifically about black rights) and not about sexual orientation.

Well I'm no expert in anything (except procrastination) but see a couple of angles here...

1) Generally speaking, DC blacks are in the lower socioeconomic strata. Many poor people turn to religion to find meaning in their circumstances. Southern churches (including AMEs) tend to look down upon LGBT issues. Poor people need an outlet for their fruustration and the ministers find an outlet for them.

2) The LGBT population in DC has been at least partly responsible for much of the regentrification of various previously underpriviledged black communities. The empowerment of a group responsible for their no longer being able to afford where they lived is an easy target of frustration.
