I'm not sure what to make of this to be honest. On one hand, it's as if they destroyed the guy's career on purpose. On the other hand, it seems like they are simply protecting one of their own.

I think the prosecutors "destroyed his career on purpose", because they felt there was evidence of serious corruption. On the other hand because of the procedural errors or misconduct by the FBI, like OJ, they probably ended up "framing a guilty man" (just my opinion). So, recognizing he's 85 and pretty much out of public service henceforth they decided to drop the verdict and call it even.
