View Full Version : Obama on Leno

Anyone else catch him last night? I have to admit that the man is entertaining and does hold my attention. He's got quite a presence. But he did make one little goof that I think he realized right away wasn't too cool since he and Leno rushed to gloss over it:
When asked about the bowling alley in the White House, Obama joked to Leno that his average score of 129 "was like the Special Olympics or something." Although, neither Leno or Obama seemed bothered by the comment during the show, the White House issued a statement apologizing for it before the show aired.
I couldn't work up too much outrage over it though since he was being self deprecating (and also because I regularly call you guys retards). Anyway, he apologized for the comment and apparently talked to the head of the special olympics.

I saw it and I thought it was a very effective way for him to talk directly to the American people. I don't think most people watch presidential speeches these days, so all of the information the public receives about the administration's policies is filtered through the various media outlets. While I had mixed feelings about the popularity blitz the president seems to be on (see his various private concerts and NCAA picks), I was struck by how well he was able to advocate his positions in an informal interview. Some kudos go to Jay for asking some decent questions, too.
EDIT: The special olympics thing was a stupid mistake, though. Guess that's the danger of a more comfortable environment.

Just saw this on Hulu and rushed here to create the thread, but I got beat to the punch apparently. Very funny and informative I thought, and it was something that the average person could connect with to get a basic idea of the direction Obama intends for us to head. I especially liked the part where he touched on it not only being a legal issue, but a moral and ethical issue as well. It really is time that the average person started taking accountability for a lot of their actions. Corporate executives and all too, but even with the current laws, we'd not have gotten into this situation nearly as badly had the average person not been so concerned with whether or not they could be extended all this credit, but whether or not they should.

This might make me an Asshat, but when Obama made the Special Olympics joke, it actually made me like him MORE, and in no way offended me.
To hear him using a common colloquial joke that almost everyone understood, and probably found funny whether they will admit it or not, was very refreshing.
Overall, I found about 75% of what Obama said on there funny enough to almost laugh out loud. And by that statement I mean that he was trying to be, and genuinely was, very personable and intentionally humorous. He had some good jokes.

My boss was the first person to mention this story to me this morning, as it kinda pissed her off, mostly because she feels that if Bush had made that comment, he would have been hung instantly.
It seems okay that Obama made the comment. Frankly, it wouldn't have bothered me if Bush had said it either. Although it's nice that the White House immediately apologized for it, just in case.

Oh yeah, Bush would have been hung for it for sure. I think Obama had gotten a reasonable amount of negative media about it, though. I mean, come on...the dude was on the horn with the head dude with the Special Olympics apologizing before the show even aired. He was pretty quick to respond (I guess he has good handlers still, haha).
I give the guy a pass, but I woulda given Bush a pass too. Hell, I would have expected such a joke out of Bush. Obama saying it was even funnier though!

Press Release - Special Olympics (http://www.specialolympics.org/official_statement.aspx)
MARCH 20, 2009
OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM SPECIAL OLYMPICS CHAIRMAN
TIMOTHY SHRIVER
REGARDING U.S. PRESIDENT OBAMA’S COMMENT ON
THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO
“President Obama called last night and expressed his regret and he apologized. He said that he did not intend to humiliate Special Olympics athletes or people with intellectual disabilities. He was sincere and heartfelt, and said that he is a fan of our movement and is ready to work with our athletes to make the United States a more accepting and welcoming country for all people with special needs.
“Words hurt and words matter. Words can cause pain and result in stereotypes that are unfair and damaging to people with intellectual disabilities. And using 'Special Olympics' in a negative or derogatory context can be a humiliating put-down to people with special needs.
“This is a teachable moment for our country. We are asking young people, parents and leaders from all walks of life to engage in conversation and help dispel negative caricatures about people with intellectual disabilities. We believe that it’s only through open conversation and dialogue about how stereotypes can cause pain that we can begin to work together to create communities of acceptance and inclusion for all.
“Special Olympics is not a program, but a worldwide movement operating 30,000 events a year in more than 180 countries. Every one of them is a chance for people of all ages to get involved, to think differently about attitudes and perceptions they may have about people with intellectual disabilities, and to make a difference.
“And so we challenge people to join our 'Spread the Word to End the Word' campaign, a youth-led national awareness effort that will launch on March 31, where we are asking people to pledge their respect for people with special needs. We’re asking people to sign our 'R-word' pledge, to join in our Unified Sports programs, to volunteer, and to be fans of our athletes and our movement.
“Additionally, we challenge policy leaders at all levels to commit to improving the support and resources for people with intellectual disabilities in areas such as healthcare, education, housing and recreation.
“Finally, we invite the President to take the lead and consider hiring a Special Olympics athlete to work in the White House. In so doing, he could help end misperceptions about the talents and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities, and demonstrate their dignity and value to the world."

U.S. President Obama’s Remark Offers “Teachable Moment” for All (http://www.specialolympics.org/obama_response.aspx)
Bowling is one of the five most popular sports in the Special Olympics movement, with almost 240,000 athletes engaged in rigorous year-round training and competition around the world. Special Olympics athletes have a wide range of abilities, and focus on doing their best and improving their skills. Many Special Olympics athletes are excellent bowlers. In fact, in December 2008, Special Olympics Michigan athlete Kolan McConiughey bowled a perfect 300 game, the third time he has done so in competition. Special Olympics San Marino athlete Gianvito Campo averaged 165 for his three-game series in winning a gold medal at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.
(bold my own)
I don't blame Obama, as he didn't have the teleprompters he has come to rely on. It is not his fault that he had to use his own words, and that his prejudicial negative stereotypes of the world's people with intellectual disabilities came out on national TV.
Hopefully he will take a more active role March 31 during the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign to stop using "retard" as a negative slur. Not all negative slurs begin with "n".

Mabus should change his handle to Meeaavrick.
Why? Because Obama said something negative?
"I accept his apology, just as I want to accept his resignation," said the Rev. Al Sharpton.
Oh, wait. That was over a comedian saying "nappy-headed hos" about an adult sport team.
LENO: Now, are they going to put a basketball -- I imagine the bowling alley has been just burned and closed down.
THE PRESIDENT: No, no. I have been practicing all -- (laughter.)
LENO: Really? Really?
THE PRESIDENT: I bowled a 129. (Laughter and applause.)
LENO: No, that's very good. Yes. That's very good, Mr. President.
THE PRESIDENT: It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something. (Laughter.)
So what makes the leader of the free world get a pass when a comedian cannot?
He compared his sub-standard bowling to the Special Olympics, when obviously some of the Special Olympics bowlers could whip him (and me, for that matter) at bowling.
It was a negative comment, and negatively stereotypical usage of a term, about a group of people (and an organization) that do wonderful things.
Not a big deal to me, as unlike some of you I knew Obama wasn't perfect.
I also know that if he stood on the Capitol steps and sacrificed babies to the imaginary Satan there are those of you that would applaud him and say it wasn't that big of a deal, and then you would deride me for bringing it up as an issue (if I did at all).
In this case I did not bring it up. I shook my head at his insensitivity and went on with my evening. My name was brought up in the thread before I posted, and so I obliged and answered. Now continue excusing Obama and attacking me.
Glad to be of service to those of you with petty lives!

Imus was given a pass by the public over his comments?
How did Obama feel about what Imus said?
Let's us see:
"I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus," Obama told ABC News, "but I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude."
So I guess Obama can make light of the wonderful and inspiring people in the Special Olympics, because many of the group have either genetic issues or physiological issues that has caused their mental impairment, not just belonging to an "thnic" group.
I guess we should just give him a pass.

Jesus fucking christ, if you can't follow the thread, GTFO. You really ARE a damn downs baby.
I can follow a thread better then most.
1) Let's see, a post was made about Obama on Leno. A mention of his negative comment was made.
2) I stayed out.
3) Someone jokingly "cued" me.
4) I answered with relevant information and links dealing directly with the brunt of his negative stereotypical comments. I also did what was expected and attempted to add a little "humor by truth". It is no secret I am not a huge supporter of Obama (Oh, really?), but that does not mean I can neither make sport of his gaffes and point out his policies that I feel may be harmful.
5) Posters continue their usual "defend Obama at all costs" regime and some begin to attack me, compare me to other posters they feel negatively towards and even political figures they feel negatively towards, clearly in an off topic manner, but consistent with low-level forum strategies of distracting from the topic.
6) You then arrogantly state you are better then a sitting governor because (paraphrasing) "i r a newspaper rader!". I can understand that you have not risen to at least her level of success (as even I have never been a state governor) and I get a good chuckle at how laughable the comparison truly is.
7) Then when I question this you ask if I can follow a thread?
So when others defend the president, distract and attack I become the "bad guy".
Check.
I knew all that would happen before I made my first post in this thread.

Obviously not, otherwise you wouldn't have had to ask what Palin had to do with what Obama said. I understand it's a bit over your head, my bad for expecting you'd be able to follow something so hard.
3) Someone jokingly "cued" me.
4) I answered with relevant information and links
Exactly, it was a joke. CT wasn't requesting your presence, she wasn't asking anything that needed an answer. What she said was another way of saying "in before Mabus' never-ending, incessant (and frankly boring already) hardon for Obama rears its ugly head".

Did you ever think that people attack and/or make fun of you, not because they must defend Obama at all costs, but because they think you're a pathetic downs baby that needs to find another dead horse to hump?
6) You then arrogantly state you are better then a sitting governor because (paraphrasing) "i r a newspaper rader!". I can understand that you have not risen to at least her level of success (as even I have never been a state governor) and I get a good chuckle at how laughable the comparison truly is.
I was obviously being facetious. No, of course I haven't risen to the level of governor. But frankly, I have no idea how a moron like Palin did either. And that was my point. The dumb bitch can't even name a newspaper that she's read or string a sentence together with proper grammar and without the words hockey mom or maverick, and yet here you are talking about her like she's some brilliant person to be revered. That says a lot more about you than it does me. :)

I was away at Christian Spring Break last week and did not get to read every post in this thread, but I think I read enough to get the gist. The main problem with Obama's appearance on Leno was his comment about how he doesn't have to honor campaign promises. When Leno asked him about getting a dog for the White House, Obama said it was just a campaign promise. That's not what we need in a president.

Been away a couple days. I see a number of people saying that Bush would have been burned at the stake for saying this, so why is Obama getting a pass?
Well, Bush has had 8 years to prove to us that he was a competent President in every other way. The American Public, and the World have by now pretty much made up their minds about him. They really hadn't in March of 2001.
Can you honestly say that you think he'd have been crucified for it 2 months into his first term? Well, maybe he'd have been treated a little more harshly based on the fact that he barely won (yes, yes. arguably on the "won" part.) both times he was elected, but 2 months into his first term I think he'd have been given that same pass.

Funny thing is, I don't think he got a pass. The day after, it was pretty much the main story on every news site and channel. The buzz lasted for almost a week. You still have people bitching about it.
I think he should have gotten MORE of a pass than he did. But what do I know?

Well, it's Washington. Like Obama himself said in that same interview: "Washington is like American Idol, and everyone is Simon Cowell.". There are a thousand people in Washington alone just waiting for anyone else there to make any minor slip up so they can pounce on them like a pack of hungry wolves. Rule 1 in politics: If the other guy looks bad, you look good by comparison.
I think considering, he got a pass here. They initiated damage control before the show even aired, which stemmed a lot of it I think, but I agree that with Bush the uproar would have been a lot greater.
I just think that thinking is based on 8 years of history with the guy as President, and knowing the fact that his people probably wouldn't have initiated damage control until after it had spun out of proportion.
I mean...during hurricane Katrina...MEXICO SENT US AID before we really initiated any sort of procedure to help. I'm sorry, that needs repeating. MEXICO. SENT. US. AID.

Haha, I dunno, but I think I actually first heard that from Carlos Mencia before I went and looked it up, so he probably made some sort of comment to that effect.
I do remember he said they sent 30 trucks full of like 200 troops or something, and called it a bullshit number. He said there were at least 800 Mexicans in those trucks. Hehe.

I disagree. March 2000, people were still butt sore that Bush "stole" the election and that Gore really won "LOOK A THE POPULAR VOTE". This outrage would have lasted far longer than the passing "oh yea, Obama made slipped up on a joke.. but he looked so great, didn't he! Like a fireside chat!".

You make it sound like, if the tables were reversed, the GOP would have respectfully stepped aside and let Gore run the executive branch for 4 years.
To be clear, I think Bush, and to be more clear, any politician other than Obama, would have been raked over the coals for that comment. I just don't think enough time has passed for you to be able to engage in revisionist history and paint people who were rightfully upset at the result of the 2000 election as a bunch of butt-hurt whiney liberal douchebags.
But then again, you generally don't paint with a narrow enough brush to need justification for painting any liberal as a butt-hurt whiney douchebag. But I digress.

If the law was on the side of Gore, you bet your sweet ass I would have done the same. It has nothing to do with who you want to win and everything to do with the Law of the Land. Had Bush won the popular vote and Gore won the electoral vote, I certainly wouldn't have claimed that Gore stole the election for 8 years like some on this forum did.
I will give Obama props for his quick call to the head of Special Olympics. While I didn't take offense to the obvious joke at himself, others did and he acted quickly to try and patch it up.

Don't feel like going to the rep response thread, but:

Completely agreed. Had a girlfriend that liked him a few years back. That's the only reason I saw it.

I think the worst comedian comment was in reference to Carlos Mencia (although I personally like him).

I thought he always used the purple curtains even before Johnny retired?
I didn't exactly pay much attention to it or watch it much though.

When I get home, I'll see if I can find the link to a movie that was made about it. Granted, it was slanted against Jay.. but even when you hear the whole story, you still end up realizing that Leno is a fuckface.
Johnny was the bomb. There will never be one so great.
