What conclusion should we draw from that article?

The conclusion is: "Lock them up and throw away the key"

That's actually a pretty good idea. Need to put it somewhere where it can't be easily removed, though. Maybe in the viscera or beneath a major vein/artery.

Somewhere close to the magical unlimited energy source would be preferable.

You mean like..a kidney? You know they have very small batteries these days, right?

How long do very small batteries last when powering a transmitter that goes any sort of distance?

After I receive a low battery alert on my GPS collar, how much time do I have to replace the batteries before they die?

You have approximately 24 hours from a low battery alert to change out the batteries. However, we recommend that you change out the batteries at your earliest opportunity to ensure adequate battery life in the event your dog is ever lost.

Why do I get a low battery alert on my GPS dog tracker in advance of the need for replacement?

This is a safety feature. If your dog escaped, and the battery had very little life remaining, then the unit could run out of power during the tracking process.

Apparently they would need to check in every 4-5 days were we going with the PetSafe GPS locator system.

From a cursory glance it sounds like even the best batteries wouldn't last more than a few months. Pity.

How about a passive RFID tracking system like they put in passports - maybe inserted under their scalp. Won't get pinpoint locations but we might at least know when they move through different ports.

There mere suspicion of an implanted tracking device may be enough to modify behavior. That's exactly what happened in the pilot episode of Babylon 5. In that episode, Commander Sinclair informed G'Kar that G'Kar had better behave himself, because there was a nanotech tracking device in G'Kar's drink, which would allow Sinclair's people to find G'Kar no matter where he might go. In fact, though, there was no tracking device. Sinclair reasoned that if there were a tracking device, then the Narns would eventually find it and remove it from G'Kar. But since there wasn't really a tracking device, then there's no way the Narns could find it, even though they would probably search for it endlessly, much to G'Kar's discomfort.

What's with all the babylon 5 references lately?
