Some general thoughts.
Whopper of a crowd. If any of you went, you definitely need to post about it.
I heard on Fox News that Obama is wearing bullet proof clothes. You sure can't tell it by looking at him.
The oath was on President Lincoln's Bible. Pretty neat.
The White House website (http://www.whitehouse.gov) has already changed to the new administration.
As I feared, the speech is a long laundry list. It is well delivered, as all of his speeches are, but it would be better with a recurring theme. Powerful conclusion.

Eh.. I think he's had better speeches to be honest. I was underwelmed. Maybe it was because of all the hype.. maybe because I was listening to it on the radio... I was maybe expecting something special. He certainly won't be quoted throughout history for it.
And yea.. the poem was fucking god aweful.. who the fuck let that get through.. thinking "Gee, I really think it will be a fitting end after the Obama speech..."

We started out from our apartment at 8:30 this morning. We only live a couple of blocks from the mall so we thought we'd be in like flynn.
At 7th street, we were told to try 10th street. At 10th, try 12th. At 12th, try 18th. At 18th, try 20th. Finally, we got into the Mall off of 20th. We ended up watching near the Lincoln Memorial.
I thought there were a lot of classless people. I was pretty disappointed, although I was not surprised, that there were long and loud boos when Dubya was introduced. There were also boos when Rick Warren was introduced. Oh, and people chanted "Obama" but never "USA". I don't judge Obama by these disgraceful people, but it's like they don't listen to a word he says.
I'll post pictures as soon as my wife uploads them.

Whats amusing about him being sworn in on Lincoln's bible is that Lincoln was one if not the most unconstitutional presidents of all time.
He suspended Writ of Habeas Corpus and the Bill of Rights and instituted martial law in the north, unlawfully created W. Virginia, imprisoned critics, had newspapers shut down, censored all telegraph communications had a arrest warrant issued for the chief justice of the SCOTUS because he ruled that Lincolns actions were unconstitutional and arrested, imprisoned then deported a congressman to the south for criticizing Lincoln in a speech.
Although whats more amusing is Lincolns ideas regarding race.
"I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and black races," he announced in his Aug. 21, 1858, debate with Stephen Douglas. "I, as well as Judge Douglas, am in favor of the race to which I belong having the superior position." And, "Free them [slaves] and make them politically and socially our equals? My own feelings will not admit of this. We cannot, then, make them equals."
In Springfield, Ill., on July 17, 1858, Lincoln said, "What I would most desire would be the separation of the white and black races." On Sept. 18, 1858, in Charleston, Ill., he said: "I will to the very last stand by the law of this state, which forbids the marrying of white people with Negroes."
Lincoln was also a lifelong advocate of "colonization" or shipping all black people to Africa, Central America, Haiti--anywhere but here. "I cannot make it better known than it already is," he stated in a Dec. 1, 1862, Message to Congress, "that I strongly favor colonization." To Lincoln, blacks could be "equal," but not in the United States.

As for the inauguration, I thought the speech was good. It wasn't his best, but it had the right somber tone for the current crisis facing the country. (And yes, Roberts screwed up the oath...now, watch, someone's going to file a lawsuit over it claiming Obama isn't the president, totally ignoring the 20th Amendment). Warren's invocation went way too long, the poem was useless, the quartet was awesome, and Lowery's benediction was probably the best invocation or benediction I've ever heard.

That did make me chuckle, as the oath is a part of the US Constitution. CJ Roberts should have known it by heart.
Maybe Roberts was thinking about the historical significance of this being the first president sworn in by a Chief Justice that he voted against confirming.

I think we can all agree the poem sucked gigantic donkey balls, both in content and delivery.
Left the condo at 10:30am. My neighborhood was a ghost town. Hopped on the Metro to Farragut North then went on foot. Got to the Lincoln Memorial around 11:30am. Then just watched the jumbotron there.
The atmosphere was very cool. No sense of tension. No sense of danger or worry with such large crowds. Very orderly. Cooperative. And of course a lot of joy.
It wasn’t as packed as I thought it would be. The Lincoln Memorial side of the mall was a mile or so from the action. Just saw some satellite images that showed people all clustered near the jumbotrons. I thought the whole mall would be packed. Heard on the radio that they estimate 1-1.5 million people.
The crowd reacted to different images on the screen. The Clintons drew cheers and applause. So did Michelle, Sasha and Malia (SP?). I got a sense of amusement when Dick Cheney came on in a wheelchair. Bush did get some grumbling and one or two people applauded but I didn’t see or hear any overt signs of displeaure. I didn’t hear any booing of Warren. Of course, when Obama came on, the crowd went wild.
Warren went too long. The quartet was wonderful. The poem? Umm... yeah.
Anyway, some photos to come in the next few posts.

Line of the day: "As for our common defense, we accept as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more."

I thought Aretha Franklin's singing was the best part of the ceremony. I was pretty misty eyed watching and listending to that.
The speech was OK, there were a few good soundbytes, but it wasn't FDR. Honestly, I'm kind of glad really, the cult of personality around Obama right now needs to get back to being a cult of patriotism like we were right after September 11th (not what it eventually formed into with the Freedom Fries and bad country music). They didn't need another excuse to proselytize about Obama the person. As Keller said earlier, those people needed to be chanting USA, not Obama.
I'm so glad my ABC feed cut out when the poem was just about to be read. I've heard from just about everyone that it was beyond atrocious.
I'm kind of sad I wasn't able to get downtown, but I've been working feverishly all weekend to get ready for my deployment, and that's what this is all about isn't it.
I'll be taking off my pocket protector and replacing it with body armor and doing my part to make America the great place it should be.

Not trying to be a unique snowflake but I thought this speech was the best yet.
“To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist. ”

The BBC did a story ("http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/documentaries/2009/01/090113_obama_prof_prez.shtml) on Obama's stint as a law professor two weeks ago. They interviewed a law school professor who had both Obama and Roberts in his class. He said Obama was smarter than Roberts. Personally, I don't think a professor would be able to tell that just from teaching one class.

This was my favorite thing he said in his speech, by far.
My dad always said two things in regard to politics and government and our rights, when I was growing up.. first was the interpretation of Voltaire's philosophy, I may not agree with what you say but I defend to the death your right to say it. Second was along the same line as this, Benjamin Franklin's quote that people who would sacrifice their liberty for safety deserve neither. Both ideas/quotes have always been important to me for as long as I can remember, and it was a feeling almost like relief to hear Obama say it. Reassurance, I suppose.

Yea right. You've proven time and time again that you so absolutely out of touch that it's not even funny (recession anyone). As soon as Obama was elected, almost everyone I knew in DC was getting requests from family and friends to come down into Washington for the inauguration. To chalk it up simply to "Media coverage" is ridiculous.

I said people I know (in DC) were getting requests from their friends and family to come down for the inauguration. That implies that while "they" live in DC, their "friends and family" do not live in DC. Is that really that hard to follow?Don't blame me if you can't construct a clear sentence.

My sentence was clear enough. It's not my fault you always look for the easy semantical argument to prove your point instead actually addressing the substance of the arguments presented.

It's not my fault you always look for the easy semantical argument to prove your point instead actually addressing the substance of the arguments presented. If there had been any substance to your argument I'd address it. The fact that you knew people who had family ask if they could come join them for the inauguration (see how clearly I expressed that) doesn't speak for or against the impact the media had on the turnout.
But you know events like HBO's Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial and constant media attention certainly didn't drive interest.
I'm not bitter. I'm just not emo about it like you and Backlash. I picked Obama for the Democrat candidate early in the candidacy race and made quite a few posts defending him against retarded criticisms. Boy, I must really have a problem with the man.

Oh. It couldn't have been a campaign that sparked unprecedented interest and involvement across the country sparked considerable interest for a celebration of that campaign's success without the help of the nefarious media.

The sum of my experience today:
There was no email list. There was no organizer, no phone call, no text message, who rallied people.
The free people came on their own to witness what America has done. 1+ million individuals, not organized by any one person, but unified by their voices.
And a 8 week media blitz.
If anything that helped reduce the crowds.
All the coverage was about how expensive the hotels were and how crowded it would be.
What Keller said. The media estimating 3-5 million people in the weeks before hand probably kept people from coming. I recall no broadcast by any station or stations calling for people to come down to DC and be a part of it.
So, Clove, you’re perfectly welcome to try and tear me and anyone else down for having a good experience and feeling like I was present/participating in an historic event but you really should ask yourself why you seemingly need to because it will never work.

Honestly I didn't know what you were trying to state by saying that either. People are proud of Obama and that he's our next president, but he's not Christ, so the whole messiah shtick is starting to chafe.

You mean they didn't feed the masses at the mall from 5 loaves and 2 fish?
You son of a bitch...
ROFL
Nothin but love bro. Nothin but love.
Hahahahahhahahahaha
Went to the mall was fun....was kind of weird to be in such a huge crowd and having everyone remain mostly civil. Alot of older black folks crying and hugging strangers but on the whole just really chill at the mall except when Bush or Cheney came on and a lot of people boo'd. Crowd was enourmous obviously.
There was a 400 pound protestor on a loud speaker at the entrance we used screaming at people about deadly sins and how we were all going to hell and everyone got a nice chuckle asking loudly if gluttony was still a sin and having pictures taken with him against his will.
Aside from that the only other funny moments were when you saw the crowd visually shift and start walking away after the prayer.....not so fast guys he aint president yet heh. We were all freezing so i think there was a slight unspoken desire that it end even though we were all happy to be there.
The security at the mall consisted of parking buses and port a pots directly in the way of the throngs of people moving around the city to funnel them to choke points but then they did not have any actual security personnel to screen them so was a little confused by that. The lack of security was nice but if your not going to use security I dont see why they continued to treat us like cattle. I think they wanted all the people together so if anyone had a medical emergency they could use all the closed streets as emergency routes but it was to the point where it was very very hard to walk forward without knocking people over. Everyone in the crowd was shockingly nice though considering we were trampling each other.
All the talk of bag searchs and the lot went out the window as far as I can tell but the mall was unticketed so you know im sure the ticketed area had much heavier security.
After the inaug just went bar hopping on U street.

sounds like there was more security at the concert. The entire west end of the mall was fenced from the WWII to the Lincoln and there were two bag/coat search security checkpoints.
I got all dressed up and bought all these heating patches and hand warmers but when we got down to the metro, it was a zoo and they offloaded a train. The hassle combined with the 10 degree windchill and the fact that we don't believe Obama is a religious figure led us to hop on the bus back to my building, and we sat in the warmth all day, watched TV and did our nails.
We did go down to the Hill today and saw some great exhibits at the Library of Congress and the National Gallery and also the mess left over from inauguration.

I suggest you look at yourself first Gan. You can start at my sig, with your attempted e-thuggery, and then go in any direction you want.
Actually, we listen to you constantly talk about how great you are, how big, bad, tough, experienced, wise, and worldly you are. And you constantly try to counter or defend your points by telling people they did not have life as tough as you, have not accomplished as much as you, etc. Aside from Seany Digital, there's no one here on the boards (except Tsa'ah and Tamaral) that brag on themselves or stroke their ego as much here as you do. For that we laugh at you, and of course goade you along into continuously acting like a fucking idiot. Which IS something you do very well.
It's real simple Gan: If you don't want to get into E-peen contests with me, you can stop saying dumb shit in my direction. Do you really expect me to just sit there and let you talk about me like that? No. sorry.
Actually, you spout shit no matter where its directed... you or anywhere/anyone else. You're probably the largest board troll we have here on the PC. You can add that to your list of accomplishments. You're my fucking hero buddy. When I grow up I want to be JUST LIKE YOU.

Are you smoking crack? Feel free to dig up that quote and then remove the thorn from your delusional butt-hurt ass. I've never claimed to control these boards, and I never will. At most, I have fun making fun of the idiots like you who try to appear more than what they really are here.
I think you're an immature kid playing almost grown-up. You've got some really cool experiences under your belt and yet you've failed to use anything from them to enhance your maturity based on the shit you post here. Its a one dimensional appraisal of you, but then its probably spot on as it relates to your one dimensional maturity level/personality.

Right Gan.
Me saying I have a great life has absolutely nothing to do with you and the R teams repeatedly attempts to characterize those who disagree with them as "out of touch" or "immature" or "don't know what real life is like". Take the current example. Out of no where you say reality has a rude awakening for me because I disagree with you.
Okay.
So what do you have to tell me about reality? It's a simple question really Gan. That's the fourth time I've asked.
If you can't answer it, then you might as well let the point drop. You and I both know you can't tell me shit about life. So, you just resort to ridiculous "I know you are" type arguments. It's funny really.
Bottom line: You have no more authority on life than anybody else on these boards. If you want to keep throwing that out there then I'm going to keep calling you out on it.

Perfect example. Who is playing e-peen contests now? Maybe one day you'll feel better about yourself Gan and you won't have to resort to the interwebs to get your daily pick me up.

Ok, I have to laugh at the audacity of the above. You sure as hell don’t speak for me. This board has over 5000 members of which only 570 or so are active not including a multitude of non-registered guests. It seems to me that you speak for less than 1% of the people on this forum at most.
Right Gan.

I've already pointed out the reality of your participation in this thread [and on the boards in general, by my perception]. I'm not your teacher, if you cant grasp it by now - you never will. There's nothing to drop really. I'm just pointing out once again how much of a fucking idiot you are and chuckling with all the PM's and positive rep that appear as a result.

Are you delusional? I've never ever claimed authority over anyone here. Please point that out with a quote if you even remotely want me to take you seriously.
Perfect example. Who is playing e-peen contests now?
You are by still trying to get me to point out some sort of reality for you to compare with in order to see who's dick is bigger. Here's a newsflash Eienstein, I dont need to compare anything with you period. I have no need to see who's 'on top'. Stop projecting.
Maybe one day you'll feel better about yourself Gan and you won't have to resort to the interwebs to get your daily pick me up.
Sure Dr. Phil. Thats excatly why I post here. Oh wait, you're projecting again. I come here for the comedy. I actually save the serious pursuits for real life.

Yea, I had a Backlashian moment. Considering thats one of your famous MO's. And yes, I've called you on that very thing numerous times. So let me clarify that I speak for me, not we. Points to you for picking that out.

Oh yea.
Nothing like e-affirmation ;)
Your perception is that "I" am immature for doing the same things that you do on a daily basis. You'll have to excuse me if I'm not too broken up about it.

Please. You've done it in this very thread. You always come across with this "I know more than you, because I'm a mature adult" bullshit when you can't back up your retarded arguments. You've done it to almost every single "liberal" that you have disagreed with.

Then why bring it up Gan? If I have some sort of surprise in store, why can't you tell me what it is I'm missing? I'm really curious.

Reading comprehension FTL.
Have someone go back and re-read what I posted. This time skip the pictures.
Here's a hint:
"Just because you say it is, does not always make it so "

Good job Gan. So, can I chalk up my prediction yet? Apparently, you are unable to articulate what I have to learned about reality from you.
Until next time...

Gan? What the fuck? I deserve to be on that list!
I don't know who all voted, but I demand a recount.

Wow. For all your talk about people “projecting” and pointing the finger at others you are the worst. You’re the guy who came out firing then, when he could not take the heat, started shooting his gun over his shoulder as he ran away.
Thanks for the apology though.
when you set the koolaid down you'll see that I'm still standing here.
