George Docherty came to the United States from Great Britain in 1950. He became the pastor of a church in Washington, D.C.

In Great Britain, they were always saying things like "God save the queen." But when Docherty got here, he was shocked to learn that our Pledge of Allegiance doesn't even mention God. When he learned that President Eisenhower would visit his church in 1954, he preached a sermon about how well saying God had worked in Great Britain and about how we should change our Pledge of Allegiance to be more like Great Britain.

A bill to change the law was introduced the next day in Congress, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Docherty went to his eternal reward on Thanksgiving Day (http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/nov/29/under-god-advocate-dies-97/). He was a great an example of how European English-speaking immigrants were good for this country.
