I was reading about how the state of Florida is trying to keep homosexuals from "adopting" children, and it reminded me how far Native Americans have fallen since the time of the first Thanksgiving.
In defending its practice of protecting children from homosexuals, the state of Florida had two experts who testified at length in court about how children are better off living with real parents. One of the state's experts explained that it's similar to allowing Native Americans to adopt, which is something that he said also needs to be banned.
He said he would also consider banning Native Americans from adopting because research shows that they are also at much higher risk of mental illness and substance abuse. ''They would tend to hang around each other,'' Rekers testified. "So the children would be around a lot of other Native Americans who are . . . doing the same sorts of things.''

The day before Thanksgiving is a good time to pause to pray for our Native American friends and to be thankful that you aren't one. But for the grace of God, you might have been a Native American.
