View Full Version : Redistributing the Wealth

EDIT: This wasn't written by me.
Yesterday on my way to lunch, I passed a homeless guy in the area, with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money.
Once inside my waiter had on an "Obama '08" tee shirt.
When the bill came, I decided not to tip the waiter and explained to him while he had given me exceptional service, that his tee shirt made me feel he obviously believes in Senator Obama's plan to redistribute the wealth.
I told him I was going to redistribute his tip to someone that I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. He stood there in disbelief and angrily stormed away.
I went outside, gave the homeless guy $3 and told him to thank the waiter inside, as I had decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy looked at me in disbelief but seemed grateful.
As I got in my vehicle, I realized this rather unscientific redistribution experiment had left the homeless guy quite happy for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn.
I guess this redistribution of wealth is going to take a while to catch on, with those doing the work.

These fantasies of wealth "redistribution" have exceptionally little to do with the realities of Obama's tax plan. John McCain was just trying to use them as a scare tactic. Obama's not taking money away from someone who earned it and giving it to someone who didn't - or at least, no more so than taxation has ever done. His plan would affect the highest-earning percentage of society, and it would only help your waiter. What you did was abusive and misguided.
Though, I'm surprised you didn't tell the homeless man and the waiter that they could both make money by starring in a home porno ...

Amusing coming from someone so touchey about pizza delivery boy tips.

Our tax system already redistributes the wealth. Increasing it to pre-Bush tax cut levels just widens the gap more, while at the same time bringing in more tax revenue. It's easier to generate money by bleeding the people at the top than nickle-and-diming the masses at the bottom.
You can't spend absurdly more money than you bring in, which is what we've been doing for the last several years. You think the deficit is high right now? It would be twice as high if we accounted for the fact that we're raiding Social Security surplus.

Btw that was just a repost of something someone sent me, not something that I actually did.
I still woulda tipped the guy just cause I'm awesome like that. Then I would have told the homeless guy about making money from pr0n.

You are totally welcome to my VHS and casette collections. The only thing of real value I own goes to my niece. Family heirloom, all that. Plus, I don't know how you'd look in pearls.

The story was more idiotic prose from ignorant dip shits that think they have anything that amounts to wealth. I hear the same type of shit any time I hang out with people in the diner ... people who likely have a tax liability of less than a few grand a year, or people with home based side businesses that probably gross less than 15k in additional income before costs are factored in.
The only pearl of wisdom in that entire re-post was the sentiment quoted. Do not politicize your job/business unless it's already a political job/business, even if you're a union contractor.
I'd probably stiff a waiter/waitress if they were shoving campaign material in my face, or wearing it.
Last month we kicked an electrical crew off property because they pulled up in their work trucks covered with Obama/Biden crap. We also skipped over two legal recommendations from our current lawyer, going on a an indefinite sabbatical, because their offices were littered (inside and out) with McCain/Palin crap.
It's one thing to discuss it at work, it's another to turn work into a campaign. It's just bad business ... and pretty fucking stupid to boot.
How dare Obama use our tax paying money to spread the wealth among the middle and lower class when he should be spreading our tax dollars to banks and big corporations, so they can go on expensive retreats and get massages with happy endings.
Anyway, the redistribution of wealth isn't anything new.

I agree with Tsa'ah, bringing politics into work is a good way to lose money. 50% of the country will disagree with you, and they may decide to take your business over.
Anyways, raising taxes on those making more than 250k, 200k, 150k, 120k, 70k per year, under Obama, isn't so people making less than 70k a year can pay less in taxes. It is so people currently paying 0 income taxes can get a $1000 refundable tax credit. THAT is redistribution. Furthermore, by narrowing your tax base (the top 5% already pays for 80% of government) you relieve a large portion of your electorate from having to pay for government, and if they're not paying for it, why would they ever care to elect people that would control spending?
I firmly believe everyone should pay some income taxes. I don't care of it is 1%, but something, so that they have a reason to care about how tax dollars are spent.
(and no, don't bring FICA into this, you know that runs under a different system, in theory).
And, yes, business needs a tax cut. We have the second highest corporate tax rate in the world and you wonder why businesses move overseas? You can't threaten, beat, harass, tax, and regulate a business into wanting to operate in your country. If you want businesses to create more jobs, if you want businesses to come to the US, instead of to leave the US, you need a pro business atmosphere, and that starts with a globally competitive business tax rate. Lets cut it to 25%.

Yes... exactly, that is why I hated those stupid Obama ads that kept saying "john mccain wants to give tax cuts to corporations who ship jobs over seas" but don't mention that he is giving them cuts so that they stay here in America.
... nor did they mention he wasn't singling out "oil companies" or "the biggest corporations" for tax cuts, he wanted an across the board one.
Oh yes, Obama was disengenuous.
If McCain had run an ad saying Obama wanted to give a $1000 tax credit to ex cons and sex offenders I think they wouldn't have been equally negative.

What's the deal with Obama supposedly wanting to bankrupt the coal industry anyway? I heard some shit about that on the radio the other day but just caught a little tidbit.

It's shifting the tax burden back to what it was before Bush.
THAT is redistribution.
Is it?

Care to back that claim up with a source? Say something from the IRS? That claim has been made in the past (or a claim with some other idiotic ratio) and been proven very untrue.
I firmly believe everyone should pay some income taxes. I don't care of it is 1%, but something, so that they have a reason to care about how tax dollars are spent.
Yes, that mother of one working two jobs ... the one who earns too much to afford health insurance for herself .... fuck her efforts. No help for you during tax season bitch. Maybe you should have just been a welfare momma.
Words can't express my exact thoughts of your intelligence right now.

I take it you've already seen Jordynn pwn a few bitches.
And, yes, business needs a tax cut. We have the second highest corporate tax rate in the world and you wonder why businesses move overseas?
We have the second highest rate, yet one of the lowest returns ... damn those loopholes.
You want to know why businesses move out of the US? Because we don't enforce labor standards. Because we offer tax shelters for it. Because we'll give you an additional tax break to do it. Because other countries don't have the same standards.
You can't threaten, beat, harass, tax, and regulate a business into wanting to operate in your country. No, you just have to stop giving in to corporate interests ... like we have for close to 30 years.
Yes... exactly, that is why I hated those stupid Obama ads that kept saying "john mccain wants to give tax cuts to corporations who ship jobs over seas" but don't mention that he is giving them cuts so that they stay here in America.

What did he say about it then? I'm curious.
From what I understand, he was pledging to make it prohibitively expensive for energy companies to build new coal power plants that did not use clean coal technology. He was saying that by setting an aggressive cap-and-trade policy, we'd discourage the overuse of dirty coal while incentivizing alternative fuel/clean coal technology and using the proceeds for their research and development.

And god bless him for doing so (though I haven't heard this). Energy companies have been poisoning us for profit for years- fighting legislation (very successfully under the last administration I might add) that force updates on old plants, restrict emissions, and increase government spending on alternative fuels. Not to mention reducing fines for breaking existing environmental regulations- something that has simply become a cost of business.
They have obligations to society to keep it clean- to put the best interest of the nation before their pocket books. I'm PRAYING that the EPA will become less of a joke now that Obama is heading in. Because for the last 8 years, the EPA has basically shut itself down under the administration's watchful eye.

Taxes have never been an incentive to stay or go? Then why the hell do large corporations shop around state to state where there going to build a new plant for the best tax breaks? The last company I worked for specifically chose IN over OH or IL because of the breaks they were given. Which brought our state approx 2000 jobs in the plant itself and I forget how many thousands ancillary jobs. Sounds like your spouting more bullshit from the left wing spinsters.

Because some locales will give breaks over and beyond a corporation's tax liability... in essence paying them to be there.
