A simple, and heartfelt, congratulations to Senator Obama.

I wish him the best, and much success for our country, over the next 4 years.

Amen.

And, more importantly, I wish all of us much success. May we all walk out of the next four years proud to be American. And may national pride no longer be a point of division between us.

Unlike you, I've always been proud to be an American. That hasn't changed in 43 years.

Because a President who represented you and your beliefs and who never used you as a political football was in power.

Yes, unlike me...and the other half of the country. You're not a better citizen or American for having "always" been proud- you were just more fortunate. (and misguided, but that's a different story)

But, again, none of your BS can take away the significance of today for us as a nation.

Seriously? You somehow think that Obama is different than any politician before him?

You are as retarded as you are delusional.

I can understand your bitterness, not particularly from a sexual preference stance but from a health stance. I've often wondered how many people have to get sick, how many people have to lose employer coverage, or how many people have to lose massive assetts due to inadequate coverage before politicians wake up. -Wake up to better research, better prevention, and ensuring affordable coverage for everyone.

Unfortunately, making people into "footballs" is common practice in politics. We need someone to exemplify why Obama's tax plans are bad! Joe the Plumber time! From the other side of the aisle -- We need embryonic stem cell research! Let's break out Michael J Fox and withhold his meds! There are so many. Politics is a circus committee chaired by wealth and mediocrity. That won't change under Obama.

But politics isn't the only thing that America has. For the most part, I'm never proud of America because of its politics. Politics, in general, turns my stomach because it reminds me of puppet theatre. I'm usually most proud of America when a disaster strikes this country. There are few people more wanting to help others or more activated for others during a national/local/state-wide crisis than the American citizen.

Liberals will be the end of Obama. The unrealistic expectations that some of his fanatic "base" has, will never be met.

Because if there's anything that the unknown-until-04 black Junior Senator from a Midwest state has proven, expecting success from him is incredibly unrealistic.

What's wrong with expecting him to summon cotton candy from the depths of hellfire using his Socialist witchcraft and magically transporting it under the pillows of all citizens within the next 24 hours?

Edit: Or maybe use ye olde Muslim magick to make cotton candy vendors appear, but not glue cotton candy under my pillow and adhered to my bedspread. I don't really want the Tooth Fairy's work and cotton candy to replace each other. Cotton candy takes forever to get out.

More cotton candy posts, less ZOMG BUSH R SUCK posts. If you've been here the last 8 years, you're pretty much aware of the Bush Doctorine. If you've been in Alaska... well, you might not be.

I hope so. Ditto Reverends Jackson and Sharpton.

Admit it'd be awesome though.

Everyone's expecting a preacher and out walks Powell, war hero. Separation of church and state wins. It's change we can believe in!

It would be. It'd be even awesomer if he had John McCain do it.

I, too, congratulate Barack Obama.

I freely admit that I did not vote for him. Over 1/3 of my countrymen voted though, and of those 1/3, well over half of them put their support to Barack Obama.

I respect the electoral process, and I will support Obama in his presidency, at least to the extent that the agenda he pushes is constitutional.

I believe Barack Obama is an intelligent man with good intentions and high hopes. I pray only that he uses constitutional means to achieve his ends. If he does, then he may very well be a great president in the eyes of many Americans.

I'm impressed by this thread, and I think it bodes very well for the future. If only CRB would stick his head in and follow McCain's example in congratulating Obama, I'd be willing to swear to the brightness of the future. But that's probably unlikely. :-P

I'm far beyond pleased that Obama won the election. I had a great deal of respect for McCain in 2000, which slowly withered away as this election went on, but his concession speech redeemed him quite a bit in my eyes. For all that I'm exceptionally pleased, though, Obama's got a hell of a task ahead of him, and I can only hope he manages to capitalize on his promises.

Some possible problems:

1) While I'm an academic myself, I'm afraid that Obama, himself one, will come off as too deliberative for the American people. He's done a good job keeping himself decisive and brief in his campaign, though, and I hope he can continue to do so.

2) He has such outrageous expectations ahead of him that it seems as if he can't do anything but fail at least partway. If he does manage to match or exceed them, though, he really will deserve that ironic title of the Messiah. I only hope that people can rally enough behind him to give him the support he needs to be effective, rather than letting divisiveness reign.

3) I'm worried about our friendly neighborhood neo-Nazi, racist skinheads. In the last 12 hours, I've heard Obama's life threatened at least 10 times. I can only hope that his bodyguards are more than vigilant.

Or that they can all be as intelligent as the pair that was going to murder 88 black people and then go kill Obama.

I have to say, this is the most carefully worded, non-congratulatory congratulations ever.

It's carefully worded because I actually do worry about him going about things using arguably non-constitutional means.

If he games the system the way it's meant to be gamed though, then more power to him.

I honestly support many of his goals, even if I don't agree on the correct way to go about things.
