George W. Bush likes to say that you can't read too much into public opinion polls. And who can blame him. He was elected president not once but twice.

Still, today's new numbers -- in a poll conducted from Friday through Sunday -- must come as a blow. His numbers are at the low end of the graph above, which is pollster.com's average of all the major polls.

As Americans are turning out to the polls in record numbers, Bush's approval rating, according to the latest CBS News tracking poll, has dipped to 20%, the lowest ever recorded for a president. His disapproval rating of 72% matches his all-time high, reached last month.

The same poll, taken on the eve of a historic election, found that Republican John McCain had gained some ground on Democrat Barack Obama but that Obama maintains a comfortable, 51%-42% spread over McCain among likely voters, with 5% undecided and a plus-or-minus error rate of 3%.

What's scary is that 20% of the population actually DOES support him. Who are these people? Do they really hate anything not remotely conservative so much that they can approve of a President who has bombed two countries, destroyed our economy, sanctioned torture, etc?

Keep telling yourself that.

Actually, once the dust has settled he's going to look like the divisive, manipulative, warmongerer that he is.

He's the reason your party is in shambles right now, make no mistake. They won't even put him on the campaign trail- McCain has had to try to distance himself from Bush to try to keep votes. And Bush isn't going to pull a Clinton on this one.

Let's talk in 4 years pal. This is just what the Republican Party needed, since they've been off topic now for 8 years. Hopefully, a REAL conservative will step up and actually deliver what most Americans want.. controlled spending in government and low taxes.

Yes, because the current president's approval rating has nothing to do with today's election.

Hey, what do the polls show the approval ratings for Congress is right now? Oh right, lower than Bush.

Hence the big upset and projected landslide Senate and House victories for democrats. People are associating Congress with republicans (and specifically the Bush administration) right now, despite that not being particularly accurate.

As I said, this man's low approval rating is bringing the entire party down and paving the way for a huge democratic sweep. FINALLY the man does something right.

It definitely affects the person running with R next to his name. That's not what this thread was about. Your first post was asking, "who could support the current president?", it was not asking for a discussion on GW's unpopularity and the impact it has on this current election.

My question remains: who really wants to discuss the current unpopular president on the day we get a chance to elect a new one? (Unless it's in a context related to this election, which the first post was not)

1) It's not posed - it's a snapshot a friend took after dinner.

2) I like the picture, but posting it as an avatar had more to do with it being an appropriate size than it conveying the exact image I desired.

3) The fact that your entire repertoire of comments consists of ad hominem attacks makes me feel sorry for you.

And

4) Going back to your last comment, I'll gladly take you on head to head in an intellectual battle - or head to piehole, as the case seems to be.

Funny thing about approval ratings and history.

Truman left office with a very low (under 25%) approval rating.

He is now considered to be one of our best presidents.

I think being regarded as even an average president is a highly unlikely result for Bush, but you cannot know how future historians will view his presidency.
