As I've said in the past, conservatives (the real conservatives) really need to take a good look around the "conservative party.

It started with as a trickle with the Newt crowd, talk radio picked up the banner as personalities such as Rush became prominent at center stage ... only to have the Hannitys, O'Reilys, Savages, and Malkins to join in as a choir. Then .... it happened. You were sold down the river by a guy claiming he was a "compassionate" conservative. Soon God was talking to him and evangelical nut jobs flocked to him.

We've seen science challenged as a farce, we've watched tax dollars find their way to institutions that are tax exempt. We've seen campaigns waged from the pulpits and theology worming it's way into our laws and potentially our constitution.

To think that the same divisive theological mind set courted by southern democrats until Kennedy. The same "patriotic" radicals that help sway over elected officials during the McCarthy era ... the very type of person that presidents such as Carter and Reagan refused to allow influence over the majority, were able to creep into the back door of another party before Reagan passed.

These are the people that sunk the McCain that was endeared by moderates, independents, and centrist republicans and democrats alike. These are the people that McCain jumped into bed with due to ambition. Ambition that led to the selection a Jr Bush in a skirt.

For nearly a decade your GOP has truly turned into a God Only Party. It has permeated beyond the central party figures and into the Senate and House campaigns. Godliness has become synonymous with patriotism ... not any Godliness, just good old gay hating, non-Christian condemning, divisive asshats that are nothing more than stone's throw from the Phelp's clan.

If your name is funny, if your skin isn't the right tone, if you dare criticize US policy ... you're not only less than patriotic, you're not only anti-American ... you're a sympathizer, appeaser, a potential terrorist. If you're not a God fearing Christian American ... you're suspect at best.

Recently we've heard about a republican House member, Bachmann ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michele_Bachmann), rip a page right out of the McCarthy era by calling on the media to investigate congress for "anti-American" sentiment. This from a woman who has done her damndest to have Intelligent Design taught as a science ... a woman who gives out sermons from the stump ... a woman that God spoke to.

Frankly, I could probably list many more .. but this is rapidly becoming a wall of text. So I'll just wrap it up with NC and Liddy Dole.

Liddy Dole, bless her 72 year old heart, had to carpet bag to her home state ,after a 59 year absence, to run for Senate in order to succeed Jesse Helms (and what a prize that douche bag was). Dole represents everything her husband wasn't ... and that's the new breed of Republican (I'm sorry ... I just can't bring myself to refer to any of them as conservatives).

This year, recently, Liddy has been losing ground to her Democratic rival Kay Hagan. In desperation, Liddy has released a new campaign commercial (http://www.politico.com/blogs/scorecard/1008/Dole_still_keeping_the_faith.html) that claims her opponent is Godless and accepts "Godless" money. Never mind that this really shouldn't be an issue ... but to flat out lie? Hagan and her family have attended the same church for multiple generations. Kay Hagan has taught (maybe still does) Sunday School.

Is this the "conservative" party you people are comfortable with? Do you see any good ever coming from this?

You can pull examples of nuts in the far left and far right. Anyone who doesn't see that is probably one of those crazies.

Unfortunately ... democratic theology nuts largely keep their traps shut and just rake in the cash.

But if you care to provide examples on par with those sited ... feel free.

Okay?

The point of this post is that one section of those "nuts" have taken over a party.

You can disagree with that all you want, but it's not an issue of both sides have them too.

-All the more reason for people who are science minded and believe in the separation of powers and/or church and state to vote. There's nothing we can do about the past behavior of the GOP or the southern democrats.

I'm eagerly hoping to see the mass exodus of the religious right. I'm really hoping they form their own party, so that people who are voting for religious reasons can do just that without contaminating the party of those who do not wish to vote religiously.

A-men brother!

I completely agree .... yet at the same time it's turning a blind eye to what history has shown.

In this climate the reasonable voice is stifled and I don't think one party (no matter how much I support Obama) controlling nearly every aspect of the federal government is a good thing.

One can hope that maybe conservatives will look to either side of them and contemplate the important questions ... and come to the logical conclusion. That didn't happen in 2004 and it spread. Do you think that will happen between 2008 and 2012? Palin is already being touted as the heir apparent to the GOP leadership ... do you think conservatives will say "can we tone down the God talk a little?" or do you think they'll concede that "more God" is needed?

If we expect the least favorable outcome ... how long do you think it will be before people start receiving congressional subpoenas for being "anti-American"? Eight years? Twelve?

Obama may be in a situation that is economically similar to Carter and with all the undertones of a post-Westmoreland Vietnam. It's not really a good situation for either candidate. Though, pure speculation on my part, an Obama win only adds fuel to the Evangelical fire.

You are pretty far left, Tsa, but I don't think you have to worry about being brought to trial by Sarah Palin for being anti-America.

While I'm not a Reagan fan, I think you've got it wrong. Reagan didn't open the door for them, let alone offer up a price tag.

It is true that the evangelical right rushed in to support Reagan, but they didn't carry him across the line. Nor did Reagan make any promises for the support ... that support came under the assumption that Reagan would be their voice. It never happened and the Evangelicals abandoned Reagan. And Reagan, to his credit, never looked back.

I can list a few hundred reasons why Reagan was/is over rated ... and on some counts the administrator of some horrid policies ... shacking up with the "Jesus" freaks isn't one of them.

If anything, he's guilty of not closing the door all the way ... he didn't let them in.
