Electoral-vote.com shows (http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2008/Senate/Maps/Oct27-s.html) a 59-41 split in the Senate based on the latest polls. The 59 includes Alaska, where the latest poll shows the Democrat leading by only one percentage point. A jury found Sen. Stevens guilty (http://www.adn.com/news/politics/fbi/stevens/story/569134.html) today, making a Democrat victory in Alaska fairly certain.
Many of the Senate races, like MN, NC and GA, are within two percentage points.
As I have said repeatedly in the past, the national Republican Party needs to stop wasting money on the presidential race and start defending its position in the Senate. David Frum, a former speech writer for George W. Bush, agreed with me yesterday in his opinion column in the Washington Post.
In these last days before the vote, Republicans need to face some strategic realities. Our resources are limited, and our message is failing. We cannot fight on all fronts. We are cannibalizing races that we must win and probably can win in order to help a national campaign that is almost certainly lost. In these final 10 days, our goal should be: senators first.
