View Full Version : Electoral College - Two Weeks Out

With two weeks to go, the electoral vote currently favors Obama by enough for him to win. According to the announcement below from electoral-vote.com, McCain's strategy seems to depend on winning seven swing states. Those state are Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Missouri, Nevada and Pennsylvania. I think the only way McCain can turn Pennsylvania around is to spend a lot of money running ads of Rev. Wright. The Wright issue may play better in those states, including rural Pennsylvania, than it would further west. McCain has said that the Wright issue is off limits, but he may have to use it now.
CNN is reporting (http://thepage.time.com/john-king-on-cnn/) that McCain is making those tough decisions that politicians love to talk about. According to CNN, McCain is abandoning Colorado (9 EVs), Iowa (7 EVs) and New Mexico (5 Evs). If Obama wins these three he gets 21 EVs. Add these to the 252 EVs Kerry won and he has 273 and becomes President. McCain's strategy at this point is to win Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Missouri, Nevada, and--get this--Pennsylvania. The first six are arguably swing states, but our three-poll average puts Obama 12 points ahead in Pennsylvania. McCain is effectively betting the farm on a state which looks like an Obama landslide. It is a strange choice. Colorado looks a lot easier than Pennsylvania. James Carville once famously said that Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama sandwiched in between. Maybe McCain is going to go all out to win the white working class men in the Alabama section of Pennsylvania. McCain can't possibly do it on the economy. What's left? Maybe run against the Wright/Ayers ticket? Any way you look at it, this has to be a desperation move.

The above assumes that McCain wins Montana, Nevada and North Dakota, all of which are polling very close.
McCain never had much chance in Iowa. I'm not sure why he didn't abandon that one earlier.

In all honesty I think that Jeb would have a similar problem to Hillary Clinton in a primary.

God, I seriously can't wait till this election is over. I'm so tired of hearing about it, everyone at work has asked me who I'm going to vote for, I just shrug my shoulders and say "We're all pretty screwed so much at this point no one will really make a difference.". I believe it pretty much, still voting for McCain.

Thanks Capt. Obvious...

I hear it here, I hear it at work, I see it on tv. It's everywhere. It even took over the OOC channel in game earlier. When I bitched about them debating it in a game where I try to get away from this shit, I was informed that I was just sticking my head in the sand and I should learn something and vote.
Nevermind I've voted in every single election since I was old enough to vote and probably know as much as that blowhard old cunt...

Electoral-vote.com's map for today (http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2008/Pres/Maps/Oct27.html) shows Arizona as "barely Republican." This could be really bad.
Good thing electoral votes arent actually counted until the election is held.
Otherwise we could just swear in Obama now.

I'm not sure why we were reported as abandoned, considering the McCain campaign had multiple stops in our state over the weekend.

I just don't want a re-do of 2000. My boyfriend at the time and I decided to stay up until there was a decision. Yea, that didn't work so well.

Well, we'd all like to see the person who wins the election to become president. But I remember trying the same thing in 2000, that was a rough night.

The person who won the election became president in 2000.
Unless you're confusing popular vote vs. electoral vote.

Since I wasn't referring to, and didn't really want to get into, anything about the 2000 election other than the fact that I stayed up until 4 AM in hopes of learning who would be president, can we not have this debate again?

My biggest wish for 2008 is a sweeping win that's unquestionable. No more of "ZOMG! I WON THE US PRESIDENCY BY 1%" or even 3%. I'd like to see a nice decisive 5-7% margin in the popular vote.

Too late Jorddyn.
It has been documented that the fraud in the 2000 election on the part of the GOP was so massive as to render even the electoral college result suspect. Fraud, BTW, which was far more serious and insidious than anything ACORN has ever done.
As a somewhat related aside, I find it ridiculous that news channels keep on harping on this election as "the most important election of our lives." I'm sorry, unless you're younger than 8 years old, the most important election of our lives, our generation, whatever, was 2000, and we blew it massively.
I would give anything, literally anything, to have fought that thing to the end and have Al Gore elected as POTUS, so he could have dealt with 9/11 in an actual effective manner.

I do not think 9/11 would have happened if Gore would have been elected. I really do not believe GW's crew took the threat as seriously as they should have.
Just my opinion.

Not just yours. I used to have this quote in my sig:
"The new administration seems to be paying no attention to the threat of terrorism. What they will do is stagger along until there's a major incident and then suddenly say, 'Oh, my God, shouldn't we be organized to deal with this?' - L. Paul Bremmer (Feb 26, 2001)

That'd be my whole acceptance speech, just get that actor and have him say, "Do you see what you get John... Do you see what you get when you mess with the WARRIOR!"
Then he'd dance... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pwfO8G5uIo
In fact... why not just skip the middle man... TURK FOR PRESIDENT!

Now I know how to read your posts from now on.
