MAN INDICTED IN HACKING PALIN'S EMAIL
David Kernell
Last updated: 9:56 am
October 8, 2008
WASHINGTON - A federal grand jury has indicted the son of a Democratic Tennessee state lawmaker in connection with the hacking of the e-mail account of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
David Kernell, 20, of Knoxville, Tenn., the son of state Rep. Mike Kernell, was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge C. Clifford Shirley, according to a statement from the Justice Department.
David Kernell was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury in Knoxville for intentionally accessing without authorization the e-mail account of Palin, Alaska's governor, the Justice Department said.
Kernell, an economics major at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, faces a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a three-year term of supervised release.
His father, a Memphis Democrat, is chairman of Tennessee's House Government Operations Committee. Mike Kernell has said he had nothing to do with the hacking incident.
The indictment against David Kernell alleged that on Sept. 16 he reset the password to Palin's personal e-mail account to gain access to it. Authorities say Kernell then read the contents of the account and made screenshots of the e-mail directory, e-mail content and other personal information, later posting some of the information to a public Web site.
The Justice Department said the case was being prosecuted by section chief Michael DuBose and trial attorney Mark Krotoski of the criminal division's computer crime and intellectual property section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Weddle of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee. The FBI's Anchorage and Knoxville field offices investigated the case.

someone as famous as her will pretty much at some point on the internet has all her information that yahoo would ask....its simply her own fault for choosing an email account on yahoo because of the questions they ask for the security.

And don't fault her, I don't use yahoo... but most of these places have a list to pick from, or not even a list to pick from, but easy mandatory ones.

What he did (if proved) was wrong. It was also done in a shoddy manner. Script-kiddies, snoopers, phishers and would-be hackers do not learn from a slap on the wrist.
We cannot condone violating the law, especially when such violations could have an impact on an election. I would state the same if the parties of the candidates was reversed.

Quoting from the young man's post after having looked through her account:
"I read though the emails… ALL OF THEM… before I posted, and what I concluded was anticlimactic, there was nothing incriminating, nothing that would derail her campaign as I had hoped, all I saw was personal stuff, some clerical stuff from when she was governor...and pictures of her family"

Dont even have to go to a rich neighborhood anymore. Was in the poconos on vacation last week...nice little quiet cabin resort around a lake. Turned my laptop on to do some work and my computer found a wireless network and informed me it had found a printer connected to the network I was shocked.

What the idjit quoted above is saying is that it's a good thing for government officials to engage in subterfuge to keep their immoral activities from the prying eyes of the public they profess to serve. He is a fan of government secrecy - especially when he believes it furthers his interest. This makes him an irrational, depraved idjit, but whatever.

I think I fail at reviewing this thread -- what is the sound legal advice, and who gave it?
This kid should be punished -- no doubt -- as should anyone who breaks into or steals from information systems. Even if my luggage combination is 1-2-3-4, it should be illegal for someone to bust into it and steal my stinky underwear.
However, I'm surprised anyone is supporting her use of private email being used for government business. I'm genuinely curious as to why someone would do that, and I didn't see it in this thread yet. That she was using it based on some legal advice is freakishly disturbing.
If other high-level government officials (anyone in the executive or judicial branches, really) are doing this, who?
