A man told today how he was shot three times in a London street for wearing a Barack Obama T-shirt.

Dube Egwuatu was buying a mobile telephone top-up card in an off-licence when the gunman confronted him and glared at the top, which carries an image of the Democrat US presidential candidate underneath the legend 'Believe'.

The man then launched into a tirade of racist slurs, shouting 'I f***ing hate n*****s' and urging 36-year-old Mr Egwuatu to leave the shop with him.

The man then left the shop but when Mr Egwuatu re-emerged, the attacker was waiting for him in broad daylight with a threatening-looking dog and holding a gun behind his back.

Realising what had sparked the increasingly violent assault, the terrified Mr Egwuatu zipped up his jacket to cover the image of Mr Obama and walked to his car.

But the shaven-headed man, who was white, followed Mr Egwuatu and after pulling open the passenger door pointed the gun at him.

After pleading with the man to leave him alone, the married former street warden put the keys in the ignition and turned the engine on.

The attacker then fired the gas-powered ball-bearing pistol three times, hitting the civil servant in the face, hand and shoulder.

Fearing for his life and bleeding heavily, Mr Egwuatu raced away in his car and found somewhere safe to call for help.

He was taken to hospital and later sent to have a piece of metal removed from his jaw.

Mr Egwuatu, a data analyst with Croydon Council, said: 'The venom in his voice was frightening.

'He was telling me that he was going to kill me.

'I couldn't believe it was happening - and just because I was wearing an Obama T-shirt. He was trying to make me walk somewhere quieter, saying: 'I've got something for you,' and 'I'm going to kill you.'

He added: 'Obama inspires me, his educational track record alone is quite unbelievable - that is why I was wearing the T-shirt.

'I did not think for one minute it could stir up such powerful feelings of hatred and I never said a word to him.'

Mr Egwuatu's wife, Angela, 35, said neither of them had experienced anything like it during their childhood in Nigeria.

Mrs Egwuatu, an immigration officer, said: 'At first my feelings were pure horror and now it is pure anger.

'If he had been carrying a real gun I would have been a widow. It is just ridiculous.

'I don't know how a person's mentality works. Why would a T-shirt get you to the point where you want to shoot someone.'

To the untrained eye, ball-bearing guns like the one used in the attack look every bit like a real firearm.

The potentially lethal weapons are often converted by criminals to fire real bullets, and can be bought easily in high-street shops and on websites.

The Met said it was investigating the incident, which took place in South Norwood, and that police searched a nearby house which the attacker was seen going into.

No one has been arrested.

Sherlock Holmes in the house-->I think a ball bearing gun is a BB gun in America. That article is poorly written and meant to be inflammatory/sell papers. The "piece of metal removed from his jaw" made me chuckle.

I don't mean to make light of the shithead with the BB gun...it goes without saying that guy is retarded. I just find it hard to take the article seriously when everything is exaggerated.

Someone needing to get a "bb" surgically removed from his face is not serious?

Yeah. The British are just sissies.

Relevance is the caliber of the ball bearing projectile and the psi of the gun.

One could even call a shotgun a ball bearing gun considering the type of ammo commonly used with shotguns. (pellets=ball bearings (for the most part)).

I would consider the attack very serious in nature.

My brother, his friends, and I used to have BB gun fights in our backyard (we lived on 40 acres until I was 10). We shot each other for fun. It was redneck paintball.

No dried mouse feces with hantavirus, ricin, or live mycobacterium Freund's adjuvant in the bb pellets?

Frickin' UK vaginas.

Guage or pressure level aside, it was high powered enough to pierce through the skin. BB gun pellets hurt, even the plastic suckers.

Sensationalized or not thankfully this wasn't a "real" gun used in the attack. It's not like either of them can even vote in the election, for fucks sake! Madness.

Same here (BB gun fights--it's amazing how stupid you can be as a kid). I just don't think a headline like "man shot 3 times" accurately portrays events. Maybe I'm the only one that that equates "shot" with an actual gun.

For example, if I bragged that I've been shot at multiple times and therefore I know what it's like to be under fire...and then later revealed that I was talking about a BB gun, I'm sure anyone in their right mind would think that I was mispresenting what actually happened by my choice of words.

I clarified right out of the gate that the guy with the BB gun is an obvious shithead, but so is the writer of the article.

You'll shoot your eye out kid.

Also, this obviously proves that Nien don't care about black people.

There are a lot of people who wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a real gun and a bb gun. If they had one pointed at them the fear of imminent harm or death would be real. I don't think that was exaggerated in the article at all.

Google image search "BB gun". Some of them look pretty fucking realistic.

See my avatar.

That was my BB-pistol of choice.

Of course, that was holstered for close confrontations. For the most part I sniped with a pump rifle. I'd pump that bitch at least 20 times.

a) It was printed in the Mail...chip paper.
b) It was in South Norwood. Fucking pikeys.
c) The "victim" was an ex-traffic warden. He deserved everything he got.
d) Why the fuck would someone in the UK wear an Obama t-shirt? Tosser.
e) The Police don't care, which is why they haven't arrested anyone.

This, plus the fact that the guy that was shot was from Nigeria and has a name like Dube Egwuatu leads me to believe that wearing an Obama t-shirt wasn't the attacker's problem with the guy. Though I'm sure it didn't help.

Sounds like the guy just hates black people, and probably would have done the same thing if DUBE EGWUATU was wearing a McCain shirt.

We dont notice people's skin colour in the UK.

If someone on the other side of the room was trying to point out Mr Egwuatu to a friend, they would comment on the colour of his jumper, the fact that he had curly hair, the fact that he had a wedding band with an inscription or the fact that he flares his nostrils when he talks. ANYTHING...but not the fact that he was the only Black man in the room.

We R PC.

I would just save time and energy and say 'the black guy'. That could also be 'the asian guy' or 'the arab lookin guy' or 'the white guy between the black guys' or 'the old guy'.

All would carry the same emotion. Why waste thirty seconds describing what he's wearing?

Except it said "gas powered".. which a shotgun is not.

Technically it is if you consider that when the gunpowder burns it creates a gas expansion that propels the shot/ammo down the barrel.

The same can be said for any firearm using a powder magazine. Just a different source of ignition. ;)

I have done that as well as use shotguns to rain pellets down on the other 'side' of our fake wars. You really have to trust who you're playing with though if you use shotguns.

My gun of choice in BB wars was a red ryder lever action (spring actuator). I had that baby zeroed in and could pick off anything up to 100 ft. with pinpoint accuracy. And because I could see the BB on its trajectory path, it made hitting moving targets pretty easy.

Anyone that uses a shotgun in a "playful" manner should be euthanized.

Only the Semi-Auto or fully auto ones are considered to be gas powered/operated(Such as the Benelli). Pump action would not be.

And yes, almost ALL Semi/Fully Automatic weapons ARE Gas powered/operated, as they use the gases created by the explosion that propels the round out of the weapon to push back the bolt, expell the brass, and load the next round.

They should have called it a fucking air pistol.
