"You're going to have to replace a 12,000 plan that you have now with a 5,000 dollar check that goes straight to the insurance company - I call that the ultimate bridge to nowhere." ~Biden, 9:20.
He just tore her a new asshole on health care.

Now it sounds like he knows more about McCain's policies than she does. She just used her windfall profits tax on oil companies in Alaska to imply that the same would happen in a McCain administration. Biden pointed out that McCain opposes windfall profits taxes on oil companies and wants to give them a 4 billion dollar tax break, and that Obama, in fact, supports a windfall profits tax on the oil companies.

I don't think Palin is doing exceptionally well here, nor do I think Biden is. Biden was the first to dodge questions by taking shots at McCain, but Palin's done it more often I think. Biden's responses to those attacks have been better than hers. She simply dodged a few of the responses and started off on her own tangents.
Biden does seem to know more about McCain's policies specifically than she does.
With that said, I'm still voting for McCain/Palin.
Also, watch the little wiggly line closely. If that's at all close to a fair sampling of how the country reacts, women are WAAAAY more impressionable on both sides of the card, and need less information before making their decisions.

Pssht. Not right now I can't. I ran out of robitussin and I found something way better. Theraflu drink mix. It tastes just like lemonade except it makes me feel all tingly inside! Like whiskey!
Seriously though I am sort of jaded on this whole process and even against the debate itself. It just seems that every chance either side gets they try to steer it away from the issue at hand and towards "Well the other guy said this and that is BAD".
I still think Palin could have done way better on a lot of this, and I don't like the fact that she continues to push the personal aspect of things in a debate about issues. (i.e. - I'm a hockey mom, relate to me. I have lots of kids. You have kids. We are SOOO in touch with each other. Vote for us.)
At this stage I'd say they're both about even as far as how well they've gotten their points across, which is not very well on either side.
Still voting for McCain, and nothing will change that at this point unless something huge happens, but I really haven't gotten much out of this debate.

Oh, and another thing. I really hate the undertone by the Obama/Biden ticket that "We care about the middle class. That's you, the voters. The other guys don't care about the middle class. They're only out for their own interests.". It makes me sick. I can see why they compare Obama/Biden to a communist government.
First, they're all out for their own interests (This is my jaded side coming out here). They're politicians. You have to figure they threw the notion that they were in it just to better the country out when they realized what it took to reach this level of politics. Do I think they're all out to fuck the country and line their own pockets with gold? No. They wouldn't have gotten into politics in the first place if they didn't give a shit, but you don't get this high up the ladder without looking out for number one.
Second of all, if the McCain side gave nothing to anyone but the super rich, chances are he wouldn't have been voted into office long enough to make a bid for the presidency. They're all out to please enough people to get the majority vote. All of them. The fact that Obama/Biden decided to pander to the middle class and just do everything they can to shove that thought into every head possible makes me want to just go watch Survivor or something. I'd put that kind of politics right on that reality show level. Maybe a little below it.

Oh I'm not saying he didn't pander to the super rich at all. I'm sure if you dug through Obama's stances you'll see that he did as well. I'm just saying that that's not ALL that McCain has pandered to. Biden said it himself. 95% of the country is not in that bracket that McCain would give tax breaks to. I don't think Biden could call this a "victory" just as I don't think Palin could.
Both did a strong job without any major gaffes or blunders (and any on either side I think were pretty much canceled out). I was pretty alarmed by Sarah Palin earlier these last few weeks, not by her lack of having politics that I agree with (I still don't agree with a lot of them) but by her not being able to articulate herself.. I feel much better about that given her performance in the debate and I'm sincerely glad to have seen that side of her come out.

There was something for everybody in this debate. If you think about this debate long enough, then you'll find a basis to justify your preexisting preference for one candidate or the other.
I don't think the debate will change many voter opinions. It might help McCain a small amount. The fact that Palin did not embarrass the Republicans might energize McCain's supporters, who have been demoralized lately.

It's pretty bad when the most you can hope for is that your vp candidate doesn't completely embarrass herself.

I would say they both “won”, but on very different levels. How can I put this in the most delicate way possible... on a fresh face level Palin won hands down. On an experience level Biden won.
The most remarkable thing to me about this debate was they both showed they were both human, simple Americans and agreed on many things. This is why I think Biden would benefit McCain more than she would and that she would benefit Obama more than she is trying to do for McCain.

If you guys say so.
I love McCain's cock.
Fixed.
Also, how many times is she going to say "Maverick"?
Palin did better than expected, and in the same token, did exactly as expected in other areas such as question avoidance and breaking out in speeches at random opportunities. She kept her talking points to a minimum and did her best to steer clear of subject matter seemingly out of her league. Her use of catch phrases was sort of annoying, but all in all I believe she did her absolute best given her circumstances.
Biden's facial expressions were practically non-existent throughout. As silly as it sounds, he really should have smiled more as the constant scowl was just fucking scary. His experience paid off especially when Palin attacked his record in the senate, he would immediately fire back attacking McCain's and adding additional information. I appreciate the fact that he attempted to answer every question thrown at him, and just like a lawyer he did his best to counter a lot of her points.
His show of emotion seemed geniune; family ain't nothin' to fuck with.
In summation, it was a solid debate. They both accomplished their respective goals. I give this round to Biden. Too bad there isn't a second VP debate; much more interesting than the Presidential, that's for certain.

You call being in the military during a time of war, being captured by an enemy during war, being imprisoned and tortured during a time of war "living off the government cheese"?
He was in the military from 1958-1981 and in Congress from 1983 until present.
You should so say that in front of some military families and personnel sometime.
What does that even mean? That saying McCain's whole life is based on government checks is somehow wrong or offensive? Sorry if the truth hurts, but he fought in a war and then came back home and continued his career of collecting government checks.
It does make sense how he could think the economy is strong when his paycheck from the government keeps coming regardless of what's happening in the private sector.

I thought Gwen Ifill did a fine job, and only one question (the one deailong with former Secretaries of State where she said "Baker" twice) seemed a possible gotcha.
I still believe she would be the best person to take over Meet the Press.
One cartoon from my local paper (Cleveland Plain Dealer) that brought up her possible "conflict of interest". I found the media coverage of it reaching, wrong, and possibly a McCain campaign ploy in case Palin failed.

In the "i don't know 5 weeks" or so that she's been the VP candidate she's uttered some truly ridiculous shit. Of course she's going to draw big crowds, the staff of every comedy show sends someone to collect quotes to save them from paying writers. So yes, I would say that not talking about being Russia's friendly democratic neighbor in the debate would automatically score her points. No, we obviously define "government cheese" differently. I know thousands of hard working people employed by the government that refer to picking up their pay checks as "collecting that government cheese." In other words, if you're getting paid by the government then you're getting "government cheese" (or government money) regardless of whether you do jackshit all day, work your ass off putting in 80 hour weeks, or put your life on the line.
I know, it is purely a partisan thing to you to make this statement about the military. To some of us, or at least myself, it is a slap in the face.
No, it's not partisan. It was reference that nearly all of his life McCain had been employed by the government with absolutely no reference to whether or not he deserved that money (personally, I think no amount of money could make up for 6 years in a POW camp). It was just simply refuting the argument that Biden has to suck since he's been in Congress his whole life. So if that makes Biden suck, then what does it say about McCain?

Fact of the matter is that Palin would get chewed up and spit out on the world political stage. That small town, gee wiz joe crap might get lapped up by some of the slavering, knuckle dragging ignoramuses in the american public, but if voters actually sent her out into the real world, it'd be a complete joke. This isn't Mrs. Smith Goes To Washington. Some former beauty pageant contestant wins a popularity contest in some ass backwards town in Alaska, somehow gets elected governor, and all of a sudden she's a hair's breadth away from sitting next to some of the shrewdest leaders and political power brokers in the world... they'd eat her alive, plain and simple.
It would be an embarrassment to have her as America's vice president. We should be trying to *rebuild* respect across the globe, not thumbing our noses to the international community by electing McCain with this trite, anti-intellectual bumpkin standing next to him. Her as the potential VP is an insulting proposition.

I was impressed at how well Biden negotiated the image minefield during the debate. He appeared confident and engaged with Palin without even a whiff of condescension. Palin played off her "hockey-mom-turned-politician" persona to a T and while that may make people's eyes roll in my neck of the woods, it's one of the reasons she's on the ticket.
I think they both did their job. They looked good in front of the camera, played cheerleaders for their running mates and repeated their campaign's criticisms of their opponents.
They made good talking heads but I really don't think either of them did a good job at answering questions or being specific about solutions for our problems; something the moderator chastised them both for early on. Speaking of which I think the moderator was excellent.
I got sick of hearing "Maverick" about as much as I was sick of hearing "Wall Street/Main Street" in the Presidential debate. Palin gets a technical knock from me for overusing it. Biden gets a technical brownie point for not beating the "four more years of Bush" slogan while criticizing McCain. Biden made the connections but they were subtle.
For Palin my biggest cringe moment was when she stated "only been at this for 5 weeks." horrible choice of words and a horrible image to attach to herself.
For Biden my biggest cringe moment was when he suggested that we should adjust the principle of jeopardized mortgages. Words escape me (and you all know how severe something has to be to make me speechless).

Me too. I was jumping up and down angry. But the people with me didn't really see why that was so terrible.
I'd be interested to know what factors would actually "qualify" someone for a principal adjustment.

Frankly had either of them spoke at length about abortion, it would have angered me. That's not an issue that VP's should be addressing (nor presidents, but that's besides the point).
Actually Palin did since she's supporting broader powers of the VP within the legislative branch. Or did I totally mishear that?

Didn't read all the responses but...
She did a LOT better than I thought she would. But this is just the difference between knowing the questions beforehand, getting a cheatsheet, and being questioned fairly off the cuff. But you can coach a 12 year old to go toe-to-toe with Joe Biden in a debate and do pretty much just as well as Palin did last night.
She certainly used up all of her time on each question. She kept saying the same things over and over (if I had to hear the word Maverick one more time...). She only slipped into South Carolina a couple of times and even those weren't nearly as bad as that one clip of her and Couric walking down the sidewalk. But in the whole debate, she only answered 3 questions with satisfactory answers. The rest were just ramblings about mavericks.
Joe Biden was pretty funny too. He couldn't answer to the charges of him saying Obama wasn't ready to lead before he was the VP candidate, nor about him saying he'd not be VP under any circumstances. But I think I liked him much better than Obama. Some of his policies are certainly out there (abuse victims able to sue in federal court... don't remember reading that in the constitution). He was spot on about Cheney as VP. I didn't like that he didn't answer the question about how his views differed to Obamas.
Overall, the debate was just a suckfest for their candidate. Which I suppose there's no other way for it to be. What I wanted to come away with knowing was If Obama or McCain does kick the bucket, what kind of president will this person be. I didn't get that question answered for either of them. Well unless they'll be a president with their heads up the dead president's ass.
Although the ancillary question was certainly is Palin ready to be president. The answer is no. Biden could step in and take over, but I thought Palin was going to have a heart attack just thinking about McCain kicking it.

Or did I totally mishear that? You might be right that expanded VP powers might imply more control over the legality of abortion; but I don't think that's the same as discussing the abortion issue (specifically) at length, or detail (which is what I think CT said would have pissed her off).

For palin, mine was every time she tried to appear folksy and pretend she doesn't live in a multi hundred thousand dollar house in ALASKA. I wonder what that thing is worth in a mainland state. You may have a point, but you may as well be outraged at a leopard for having spots. Very few national politicians have lives that even remotely resemble the typical middle class family; but that doesn't stop many of them from trying to pull off that appearance (including Obama). It's just more of the marketing game we play with politics. Palin didn't invent the game, she's just playing it.
For biden, mine was every time he would allude to Bush. I don't give a shit about Bush right now. Bush isn't running.I found that irratating too, but to his credit I don't think he was nearly as obnoxious about it as Obama was during the Presidential debates. I think Biden actually made an effort to minimize the "Bush connection" in his arguments.

It's when they all agree with each other, no matter what site they're on, that they become indicative.
I hadn't realized you were able to find all polling site last night right after the debate and make this leap. Weird, I just saw a poll on Drudge that was overwelmingly saying Palin won.
I guess when you say "all" you just some. Like I said, I'm surprised you would use such faulty methods to "prove" yourself "right"

BOTH of them pissed me off by ducking and weaving. Palin more so because she chose to duck and weave abortion and poorly at that.
Combine that with nails on a chalkboard voice, and I'm definitely not voting for her.
Because you were SO close to voting for McCain.................

As much as people like to dice it up over who won, most of those arguing have already made up their minds. Debates are not intended for us.
Since there's no real way to determine (outside of a meltdown or home run) who won any debate, we have to look at the polls ... until such a time that those that are truly undecided (because at this point it's mainly cocknozzles pretending to be undecided to get on television) exclusively participate in said polls.
At this point we won't know the "winner" until the polls accurately reflect last night's debate.
This would probably be a good time to plug McCain losing ground in key states, as well as losing ground in traditional republican strongholds. (http://www.electoral-vote.com)

So you consider Drudge to be a 'major news site'? Oh, wait. I forgot who I was talking to. Never mind.

I think the polls will generally say that Palin "won" the debate. I think she regained much of the shine she lost between her acceptance speech and this debate.

Before he made his VP pick and went uber conservative, I actually was. She turns me off quite a bit, and though I like McCain, he can't make up for it. It's worth noting that this debate was my main litmus test, as Palin was rather shy about giving interviews.
It's also worth noting that my main criticism of bush has been his inexperience, which is why Obama's nomination mystified the hell out of me and put me off at the same time. If McCain had picked someone experienced and moderate, I think he'd be in a much better position after eight years of an extreme right administration.

I have not read this thread at all so not sure if it's been mentioned yet but...did Biden get a facelift fairly recently?
He gets almost asian-looking eyes when he smiles and they crinkle strangely. Not to mention for a 72 year old, he somehow managed to avoid getting any wrinkles in the previous seven decades.
The debate was not kind to him during the close-ups. He is handsome enough from a distance, but when the camera zoomed in and showed him in an expression other than a neutral one, the skin around his eyes went all crazy and zipped back towards his ears. As one gets older the skin is supposed to get looser, not tighter. I just found myself waiting for him to smile so I could watch his skin stretch waaaaay back.
And just shut up everyone, I've stated numerous times already that I am shallow!

Once again, you show your stupidity. I'm going to clue you in Shit4Brains.. just because someone doesn't respond to you over the internet in an hour, doesn't actually mean they are looking at your stupidity and trying to come up with a response. Trust me, your 2nd grade level of humor isn't that difficult to respond to.. I just have to dumb mine down so it doesn't fly over your head.

It's a plus for gaffe-prone Biden, too. I was nervous he was going to say something inflammatory and give Palin the win by default. Luckily, he was well-restrained.
