By Tim Wise
For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.
White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.
White privilege is when you can call yourself a "fuckin' redneck," like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll "kick their fuckin' ass," and talk about how you like to "shoot shit" for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.
White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.
White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested."
White privilege is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.
White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you.
White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was "Alaska first," and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she's being disrespectful.
White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think you're being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college--you're somehow being mean, or even sexist.
White privilege is being able to convince white women who don't even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a "second look."
White privilege is being able to fire people who didn't support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.
White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God's punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you're just a good church-going Christian, but if you're black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often t he result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you're an extremist who probably hates America.
White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a "trick question," while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O'Reilly means you're dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.
White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a "light" burden.
And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren't sure about that whole "change" thing. Ya know, it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain...
White privilege is, in short, the problem.

That Palin gets a free ride because she's a cracker? The whole thing is so completely slanted that it's difficult to take any message away from it. The writer points out the things he disagrees with Palin on, or what he considers hypocrisy, and then says she gets away with it because she's white (as you can tell by the start of every paragraph...).
I don't know why your responses are so hostile, or why you pretend that I've somehow missed simple points. Your post wasn't exactly rocket science, and I was able to decipher it with only 3 PM's to other posters on the boards.

I was already ignoring the political references. I'll be honest, I skimmed it the first time after reading 4 or 5 of the white privilege paragraphs. Then I read it again before responding and read all the white privilege paragraphs. Regardless of any validity you want to give to any of the writer's points, the whole thing is thrown out the window because it's clear the writer is a shithead from the start of each paragraph.
Why would a trust the writer's interpretation of events when he clearly states at the beginning of each paragraph that he has his head up his ass?

Nothing like a self-hating white male writing about a successful female in strangely racial terms, and seemingly for no reason but to sell a few more books and get a few more interviews.
White people are alright, but you wouldn't want your brother marrying one.

Most of what you're describing is "rich-people power". Not white. The same things could be said for anyone with means, regardless of color. OJ rings a bell.
Money brings power. Power is the ability to save yourself from fucking up- the ability to control people. It'll never change, no matter what.
Never, ever. It's part of the human condition.

To me, this is correct. It has more to do with money and power than it has to do with race. There is a flaw though ... and it becomes apparent when money/power reach an apex ... or even equilibrium between two people of differing back grounds.
It is also apparent that a problem still exists when you just look at the classic responses to the essay. Most laughable are claims of "affirmative action" ... and then the assumption by a tried and true ignorant of the neocon persuasion that this person is a self-hating white man.

Money and power buy influence. I mean, since this whole discussion started politically... there's a statistical dead heat right now between the rich white guy and the rich black guy.
And we all know it's not impossible for a black person to do well in this country. If it was, the argument would be much different. Some people (and some of those being guilty whites) seem to feel like we're living under apartheid.
Where there is certainly racism, in my opinion it's been mitigated to the natural level. It's to the level that everyone equally hates each other. Plenty of it on every side, black, white, yellow, brown. And if there were no races, we'd find something else to hate on each other for. It's how we're wired. I've already told the story once how I got the crap kicked outta me for being a white guy.
That said, I wish there were some valid statistics. It's hard to ignore all the nice cars in urban areas that I see, but it's also hard to ignore, well, Texas.
Sadly, no one person will ever be correct in this type of debate. Bringing it up tends to lead to bad blood all around; both sides have very valid points on a passion-inspiring issue.
Lost you on the first line. Come on.
You’re white.

HAHAHAHA. I like where this thread is going.
Search for Kill Whitey Obama turned the two items below up, which is also funny. (probably untrue!)
(this part is true)
KNZR 1560 AM host Jaz McKay posted a version of an "Obama '08" logo followed by that phrase, as well as other fake slogans including "Hope. Change. Dead honkeys." and "Yes we can. Kill white folks."
http://www.stentorian.com/MoveOn/obama_pope.jpg
(This is the part I doubt is "fair and accurate".)
The Michelle Obama Rant Tape was filmed between June 26th - July 1st 2004 in Chicago, IL at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Conference at Trinity United Church: specifically the Women’s Event.
Michelle Obama appeared as a panelist alongside Mrs. Khadijah Farrakhan and Mrs. James Meeks.
Bill Clinton spoke during the Conference, as did Bill Cosby and other speakers, but not at the panel Michelle attended.
Michelle Obama spoke at the Women’s Event, but referenced Bill Clinton in her rant — his presence at the conference was the impetus for her raving, it seems.
For about 30 minutes, Michelle Obama launched into a rant about the evils of America, and how America is to blame for the problems of Africa. Michelle personally blamed President Clinton for the deaths of millions of Africans and said America is responsible for the genocide of the Tutsis and other ethnic groups. She then launched into an attack on “whitey”, and talked about solutions to black on black crime in the realm of diverting those actions onto white America. Her rant was fueled by the crowd: they reacted strongly to what she said, so she got more passionate and enraged, and that’s when she completely loses it and says things that have made the mouths drop of everyone who’s seen this.
The “tape” is a DVD that Trinity United sold on its website, and possibly offered free for download up until March 2008 when Trinity’s site was scrubbed and the DVDs were no longer offered for sale.
This outburst happened just one month before the 2004 Democratic Convention, when Barack Obama delivered the keynote address.

It's because you're a gamer and have days worth of facial hair, therefore upper management thinks you're a Muslim.
That or you're a black albino. A lot of white people are secretly black albinos. They don't even know it.
And even less seriously, I find it totally unfair that if I pour black paint all over my body and try getting a job promotion, I am racially discriminated against based on paint.
You have no fucking right, other than having the fucking right, to complain about how bad whitey has it in America.
I don't even know who Palin is, or why anyone would vote for what is obviously a pander to butthurt Hillarepublicans, but I also realize that if people don't vote, it won't make much of a difference who has an opinion about what. Non-existentially.
I hope you read all this garble.

Ya know, it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain...
And I do want to address this. First of all, you can look at what the Senate votes on, most of it is bullshit. Congratulating Appalachian State for beating U of M and shit like that. They're unanimous.
Secondly, the 90% was over the last year. Over the last 4 years McCain has voted with his party only around 70% of the time on average. Over the last 4 years Obama has voted with his party (voted with Pelosi and Reid if you will) 97% of the time.
And blaming this all on Bush ignores of course congress, who magically through doing NOTHING the last two years is absolved of all responsibility? And did Clinton get blamed for the dotcom meltdown? This is a result of....
1. Greedy people buying too much house than they can afford.
2. Greedy bankers lending more than they can afford to people who can't afford it.
3. appraisers and real estate agents and everyone else going in on the racket.
4. Alan Greenspan keeping rates too low after 9/11 and making too many dollars.
5. Housing rules put in under Clinton, continued under Bush, to get more poor people and minorities (yes, black people) into homes. Ie a lowering of lending standards.
So, a little bit the fault of the government, but certainly it isn't just the fault of the president, or one president. It is the fault of Clinton, Bush, their congresses, and Greenspan (who was appointed by clinton, but served for bush as well). Everyone gets a share of the blame for that portion of the cause.
..
...
....
I could write something like...
Black privilege is running for president and getting only softball questions from the mainstream media because they want to see you win.
Black privilege is the media tripping over themselves to report anything bad about your white opponent's white female running mate, to the extent of having such sloppy reporting as to print daily retractions for the day before, but not at all looking into your past such as your associations with an unrepetentant terrorist.
Black privilege is starting to run for president after only 143 days in the senate, and no one in the mainstream media questions your experience.
Black privilege is Barbara Streisand putting a $30k a head concert on in your honor.
Black privilege is attacking your running mate's vice president, someone who has vetoed more pork than any governor in Alaska history, on pork that goes to Alaska. When you well know that every state gets pork, and that the governor doesn't ask for it the congressmen and senators do, and you don't have to worry about the media calling you out on being a hypocrite because you yourself asked for 900 million dollars with your first 3 years in office.
Black privilege is being able to get elected president out of nothing other than showmanship and white guilt.
..
...
....
Now would anyone call that fair or unbiased? I didn't think so.
You know what... that original forward email is AWESOME. I think everyone should send it to everyone they know. There is NOTHING that could more easily push the election into McCain's favor than that email going out to all the blue collar workers in the midwest. My grandpa is a rampant forwarder, I'm sending this to him now.

I tried to read it; unfortunately, punctuation seems to elude the author of that piece more than it eludes some of our posters. I ended up skimming.
Here's what I got from it: "Rich white people control the USA. I don't like this, and it's not fair." Hey, I didn't ask to be born white, and I'm not aware of any person who asks to be born black, asian, indian, hispanic, or whatever "race" they may be.
I don't like rants like this because all they tend to do is stir people up, make them indignant, and foster an "us v. them" mentality. I will give the author that stirring people up is necessary at some points. However, IMO it's bigotted and irresponsible to ourselves and fellow humans to reduce ourselves to a racial "point system" now instead of a personal accountability system.
If you think money is a problem, give to charities as much as you can. If you think racism and/or bigotry is the problem, strive to diversify yourself. If you think the law is the problem, you better damn well go into law. If you think medicine is the problem, I hope you're in medical school. Before we can change anything, we have to change our approach to things and ourselves.

I'm not uncomfortable with it - there is an advantage to being born white. There's also an advantage to being born to a family with two parents in the United States, to the fact that my parents and grandparents are all still alive and still married, to being healthy, to being tall, to being intelligent.
I'm thankful for all of the advantages I have, but I don't apologize for them. I do volunteer and donate to assist those who were not as lucky in the lottery o' birth. Why that's such a bad stance to have is beyond me.

If I'm a black high school student today, there are white American institutions, universities, hovering over me to offer me opportunities. Almost every institution has a diversity committee. Every country club now has a diversity committee. I've been asked to join so many clubs, I can't tell you. ... I don't have to even look for opportunities in many cases, they come right to me."
I remember a white, jokster friend of mine in high school took his PSATs and put he was black on the race question. He got 100 points LESS than me (it was still a very decent score) and had 20 letters in his mailbox over the next 6 months for scholarships, financial aid, and acceptance letters to collages he never applied to.

Granted I don't have any statistics to prove this, and I haven't spent a ton of time all over the state, but i'm just saying from what i've noticed and my experience in Atlanta, the metro area, and a bit south of metro in Griffin and the surrounding areas, there are a fuckton more blacks than whites on average. Park, I think it would be hard to tell whether or not, or to what degree, changes in the black voting demographic are due to Obama himself--generally, "the black vote" has been democratic anyway--and the increased numbers expected to show up at the polls could be due to both the enthusiasm that democratic supporters have shown this election cycle, or due to Obama being half-black, or both. Likely both, but impossible to tell which to which degree.
Anyway, electoral-vote.com shows today:
Obama 282 McCain 236 Ties 20
Granted, these polls mean nothing so far away from the election, but I'm glad to see that it's at least still fluid.
Sure. THAT'S why Obama has 90% of the black vote.. it's because he's a Democrat. It can't possibly have anything to do with him being black.

If what Bill Clinton said was racist then you are the world's biggest George W. Bush supporter.
It was straight out lies by Obama's campaign, manufactured to turn the "black vote" against Hillary. It worked. Even the media picked up and ran with the ball.

If you need me to post it for you, just say so. I am happy to cut through your illusions.

To be honest, you use L O L when you are beaten and have nowhere else to turn. Kind of the Internet equivalent of "I know you are but what am I".

Did you say something that I shouldn't be laughing at? Maybe it was "nickname" is one word ... not two.

I use pictures to get my point across to stupid people. Danny Boy likes bright colors... it helps him concentrate.

I still remember that post of yours. Trying to be a pseudo-intellectual-I-got-my-education-via-google-searches .. then falling flat on your ass with the "nick(space)name" reference.
I hope you read all this garble.
lmfao
Regarding Palin being a grandmother at 44... that's straight hood.

How exactly is that "straight hood"?
Girl marries when she's 20. Has a kid when she's 22. This kid gets married when she's 20, has a kid when she's 22.
There are plenty of people who have grand kids at the age of 44.

Wasn't Barack Obama's mother under 20 when she had him?

It's poking fun at her not being the stereotypical 44 year old grandmother you'd normally see gracing a headline. If the jab doesn't apply to you, don't take it personal. It's called sarcasm.

It was a very weak attempt at sarcasm perhaps.. and I didn't take it personal since I don't have grand children yet.

Kudos at not taking it personal. Anything else you want to know?

Ann Dunham Soetoro PhD would have been a grandmother at age 58. Kind of shoots that whole notion down doesn't it.
It's not like Obama's mother spent 6 years in the pursuit of a 4 year degree, nor is it as if she perpetuated a cycle.

That's just because he didn't care about getting laid when he was younger, he was too busy committing voter fraud at ACORN.

Just because you seem to not know what was said, and used by the Obama campaign and media as racism, I will help you out.
While being questioned by reporters about the historic nature of the campaign between the first female and first black candidate (which is BS, historically, and an attempt at getting him to say something "controversial") a reporter asked:
"What does it say about Barrack Obama that it takes two of you to beat him?"
Bill Clinton laughed, and said,"That's just bait too. Jesse Jackson won twice in South Carolina in '84 and '88, and he ran a good campaign. And Senator Obama's run a good campaign. He's run a good campaign everywhere. He's a good candidate with a good organization."
There is your "racist" comment.
Now try what I told you. Go ask people if they heard about Bill Clinton making a racist comment in SC during the primaries. Then ask them what it was. The results are striking.
