View Full Version : Palin's Faith

I learned some things today about Sarah Palin and her faith.
Bush did well on the issue of faith early in his time as President. He invoked God after 9/11. He said it was God's will that we invade Iraq. But he fell short later when he either lost faith or became ashamed to admit his faith in public, and he started saying that his faith had nothing to do with his decisions.
The Bible teaches that you should not hide your faith. It should be on display as a light to the rest of the world. Sarah Palin has boldly displayed her faith throughout her political career, and that display has influenced others, including John McCain.
Below are some of the items that I remember from what I learned this morning about Palin's public displays of her faith.
Palin admits that we are at war in Iraq to do God's will. Bush initially admitted that but stopped some years ago. God would not have put all the oil in Iraq if he did not want America to get it.
Palin opposes abortion except in cases when not performing an abortion would kill the mother. In 2000, McCain was angry with Bush when Bush would not change the Republican Party platform to include an exception allowing abortion following rape. But in 2008, McCain did not attempt to change the platform. The official 2008 Republican Party platform adopted at the convention last week opposes all abortion, including when the baby is the result of rape. McCain and Palin both want to appoint judges who will overturn Roe v. Wade. And McCain has chosen a running mate who opposes allowing abortion following rape. All of that says that Palin's public display of faith has changed McCain's position on this issue further in the direction of life.
Palin understands that we must protect traditional Christian values by preventing homosexual "marriage." She believes that homosexuals can be reeducated to be normal.
Palin says that we should teach creationism in public schools. There is no reason not to teach what so many people rationally believe is how the world came to be.
Palin says it is God's will that we should build a new gas pipeline in Alaska. The reason nobody discovered that gas until after we bought Alaska from Russia was because God wanted American, not Russia, to get the gas.
Palin opposes exposing our school children to sexual "education" programs. Those programs just encourage premarital sex.
Although she supports free speech, Palin recognizes that some books are so against the Christian principles on which our nation was founded that those books should not be in public libraries. That's not the same as outlawing books. She believes uncooperative librarians should be fired.
Palin wants to keep God in the Pledge of Allegiance, just like the Founding Fathers intended.
Palin will fight to restrict government interference with the free exercise of religion. For the last 50 years, the courts have been restricting freedom of speech when the speech is religious in nature.
If McCain is elected, there's a good chance that Palin will assume the leadership. We are not going so far as imprecatory prayer, but we believe that God will act in His own way to see that Palin becomes the President soon after the inauguration. If America has a President who unashamedly follows God's will and makes it clear that she is acting because it is the will of God, then no nation in the world will be able to stand against us.

Really, Clyde. Your attempt to mock the conservatives is becoming a little obvious. Okay, a lot obvious.
While it's true, Palin had this exchange:
Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?
SP: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.
Everyone with a brain knows the pledge wasn't written until 1892 and Under God wasn't added till 1954. Can you make her look any more ignorant while pretending her belief is a virtue?

You obviously have not researched this issue at all. Palin believes that Alaska in the Last Days will be a "refuge state" to which Americans from the lower 48 will flee to survive. At that point, all of Alaska's gas and other natural resources must be fully exploited to support the refugee population.
Read all about it (http://www.startribune.com/politics/national/president/27958514.html).
The oil from Iraq will help us exploit our Alaskan resources at a reasonable pace to ensure that it is in production, but not depleted, when that dark time comes.

Right. And Palin agreed with him.
Governor Palin spoke at the church saying that God wanted her to build a gas pipeline in Alaska. Then the pastor came up on stage and stood beside her. While standing beside her, he explained that the reason the pipeline was important was because Alaska would be a refuge state in the Last Days and needed to be ready to provide for refugees. The whole time the pastor was talking, Palin was standing beside him nodding her agreement.
Watch it on the Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k84m2orSOaM). The relevant portion runs from about 1:25 to 2:05.
And you can see Palin's speech to which the pastor was responding also on the Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG1vPYbRB7k).

I don't much care about the whole "refuge" thing, but I think people are giving Palin a much bigger free ride because of how innocuous she looks than they'd give, say, an older man. I think the numbers would look different if people realized how much of a social "conservative" she actually is.

Christian voters care.
Also when the lower 48 becomes uninhabitable and you have to flee somewhere, you'll care too. I know you're not going to Mexico. Everything there looks yellow, almost like you're looking through a yellow filter. And you're sure not going to Canada, where they have socialized medicine and say everything in both French and English. No, you'll flee to Alaska, where you'll want some gas to stay warm and heat up your moose stew.

No I mean, who fucking cares what she says and does in her church. I didn't care when it was about Obama and I certainly don't care with Palin. It's really petty bullshit that has nothing to do with her political life except for others to make people think it has something to do with it. If you don't like where she stands on issues, that's fine. But what she does in her church is her own fucking business, imo.

We care because we know that she is making decisions as governor because of what God wants her to do. We know that because that's what she said. There's every reason to believe that she will carry that decision making process with her to the vice presidency and then to the presidency.
There's really no better way to make important national decisions than that.

I think that politicians should be free to worship whatever deity they want and it shouldn't have a real impact on politics. But that changes when they're bringing politics into the church--it opens up the door for scrutiny. Talking about politics in a church doesn't screen those politics from scrutiny..
Additionally, If a politican starts proposing legislation based on the motives/desires of their religion, I have a problem. I don't want her church making policy decisions for the United States of America. Her church supports the so-called "ex-gay" therapy movement. As someone said (was it you?), you can't "PRAY AWAY THE GAY."
That, and her very extreme views on abortion. I think she's being given a free ride by disinterested or unconcerned voters that find her physical appearance to be innocuous.
Religion, by itself, shouldn't mean anything for a public official. But when they're injecting religion into politics or politics into religion, everything becomes relevant and fair-game.

I am not trying to accuse you of agreeing with Palin's religious beliefs by voting for her. All I'm saying is that talking about politics in church opens the door for political scrutiny. It's no longer simply a religious matter when you bring politics into it.
If you don't see why injecting politics INTO church changes anything from simple religious belief, nothing I say will change your mind.

Eh I actually agree with Ashliana.
On its own it's not a huge deal but if you openly say you do politics by the will of God, I can see how that is worrisome to people when it comes to whether or not you have good judgment, etc.
Palin is a social conservative and I dislike that a LOT about her.. but I don't think it necessarily requires "God told me so" to be a social conservative nor have I read/heard her use that as reasoning, so I'm not anywhere near the point where I'd be thinking Palin's faith was to a zealous degree that made her unfit to hold office.

I agree with the you don't need to say "god told me so." It's kind of like arguing about who created Earth, and the creationist says "God totally did!" and you say "How do you know that?" and they say "Because it's God!" It strikes me as a patronizing catch 22.
At the same time though, we have systems designed to deal with these people, which will hopefully hold. Otherwise, we can all move to Britain (insert random Eddie Izzard on religion quote here).

I had to look that up. According to the Wikipeida disambiguation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sasha), Sasha is a name common to Russia and Eastern Europe. But it was also a Hungarian porn actor who, when he was not acting in porn, also played roles as a Burt Reynolds look-alike. Since Hungary was part of the Communist Soviet Union, I assume you are talking about Sasha the Burt Reynolds look-alike. Alas, he died this summer at the age of 63.
If you do a Google image search for him, which I don't recommend doing at work, you'll see that he really does look almost exactly like Burt Reynolds, at least from the neck up.
