Anyone voting for T. Boone Pickens?

Which makes me wonder why you created this thread...

While I'm finding this speech terrible in terms of speaking ability, I'll grant that I'm biased.

However, she just said the dumbest thing possible: "If a hurricane strike were to happen, we shouldn't be so dependent on foriegn oil that we should have to draw upon the strategic petroleum reserve." Huh? A hurricane strike knocks out oil from offshore drilling, not oil imports. Boats can go to another port.

Great speech by Palin.

Giuliani really tossed a lot of heat on the fire in his speech, but his hit it home for me...

Then he ran for the state legislature and he got elected. And nearly 130 times, he couldn't make a decision. He couldn't figure out whether to vote "yes" or "no." It was too tough.

He voted -- he voted "present."

I didn't know about this vote "present" when I was mayor of New York City. Sarah Palin didn't have this vote "present" when she was mayor or governor. You don't get "present." It doesn't work in an executive job. For president of the United States, it's not good enough to be present.

You have to make a decision.

People do not all speak with an East coast pronunciation. The majority of this country, outside of the coasts, has some colloquial difference.

I found her inflection charming and realistic.

I was listening on the internet and watching on MSNBC,
Just like I call one station (FOX) "FAUX News", I call another (MSNBC) "MSDNC".

They are so low in ratings that they have decided to be the opposite "answer" to FAUX.

I posted months ago that I firmly believed Chris Matthews wanted to have Obama's love-child, and I still believe he does.

While the Russo-Georgian conflict is a complex system, she was likely refering to the Nabucco pipeline. Russia opposes it, as it will allow Europe a secondary means of gaining natural gas. That threatens Russia's state-controlled Gazprom's monopoly in Europe. Gazprom is building the competing South Stream pipeline.

There are other factors involved in the conflict; Russian domination of the region, threatening other former Soviet states, appeasing Russian hardliners, and pushing back against Nato expansion being a few.

Look at the current maps, and look for Russia's available ports into the Black Sea. It can be pretty telling on one reason (but not the only reason) the conflict happened.

Right a hurricane doesn't effect imports. Thats why shes saying we need more american drillling so when a hurricane or natural disaster hits. We need more american drilling to take up the slack from what does get hit. How often does alaska get hit with a hurricane? Or Cali? And yes a hurricane effects imports. How many oil tankers are going to dock in 15-20ft seas? Or lpg tankers? Delay by a day or two will make prices jump up one hell of a lot.

One thing I've always liked about the Republican convention compared to the Democrat convention is that the Republicans don't dance in the isles every time music plays over the loud speaker. The Republicans also dress nicer. Or at least that was true in past years.

But that seems to have changed in 2008. Many of the Republicans were slovenly dressed this year, abandoning their ties and high heels for t-shirts and baseball caps. And they were dancing--not well--in the isles to various country croons and antiquated pop tunes. It was disappointing to see them acting like Democrats.

All all all, all night long (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hihp_Jjdnsg) (if you click this link, you'll be singing it all day).

Interesting. I'd heard there was damage to a bunch of the onshore facilities that processed the stuff from out there. My fault for listening to hearsay I guess.

According to the President, Gustav does not appear to have done much damage, but it's too early to know for sure. "And so our discussion today is about energy. The Gulf Coast region produces a lot of energy for the United States. And we're now in the process of assessing any damage done to the infrastructure and what -- it's a little early right now to come up with a solid assessment. There are some encouraging signs. For example, during Katrina, rigs would be -- rigs moved because of the force of the storm and their anchors drug across pipelines, which caused there to be infrastructure damage. We didn't see much of that this time, although I will tell you that it's a little early to be making any forecasts," said (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2008/09/20080902-1.html) Bush on Tuesday.

Gustav made landfall as a category 2 hurricane. Katrina was a category 3 when it made landfall. Both storms were stronger before they made landfall.

Katrina's damage to the oil industry in 2005 was partly to offshore rigs and pipelines but mainly to onshore facilities. Most of the spilt oil in 2005 was from onshore facilities.

Since local and state levels do not focus largely on foreign policy, thats a fair assumption. Yet, locally, econonomic policies are a large factor in leadership and issues. And yet I still trend to vote for Democrat as well as Republican candidates - depending on my favor of one over the other.

Funny, ywt when Gan says he's independent and we laugh at him for thinking he was anything but a Republican, we're wrong?
But yet the label is still attempted to be applied. Face it. I do not meet the textbook definition of a card carrying Republican.

1: one that favors or supports a republican form of government
2 capitalized a: a member of a political party advocating republicanism (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/republicanism) b: a member of the Democratic-Republican party or of the Republican party of the United States
And I do not meet the textbook definition of a card carrying Democrat.

1 a: an adherent of democracy (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/democracy) b: one who practices social equality2capitalized : a member of the Democratic party of the United States.
And since I give consideration to the person being elected and their stance on the issues that matter the most to me - I would logically conclude that I consider myself an Independent.

1capitalized : a sectarian of an English religious movement for congregational autonomy originating in the late 16th century, giving rise to Congregationalists, Baptists, and Friends, and forming one of the major political groupings of the period of Cromwell
2: one that is independent; especially often capitalized : one that is not bound by or definitively committed to a political party

I'd also argue that local politics in regards to the economy are a lot different as well. I'd imagine that Texas in general is more right wing -across the board- than what is considered right\left on the national scene.

I don't know the point I'm trying to make. So, I'll just stop and say that I have no reason to doubt that you'd possibly vote democrat locally, but I still remain skeptical that you would vote anything but republican nationally.

Mabus you're full of fucking shit. I grew up two counties over (Muskingum) and live one county above it (Franklin), I went to college two counties southeast of it (Athens) it's Lank-a-ster. Stop being a pin head.

Tell us where you live, Mabus. Apparently it's not near Fairfield County.

If you're going to rebutt me, at least get your facts straight.

From the wiki YOU posted the link to:
Lancaster (pronounced LANG-kuh-ster by most locals)

I left out the "g" on the first syllable (never noticed it, must be my mid-western drawl), but the k is second syllable as I stated, and you have wrong.

So on the "get your facts straight" I think you should heed your own advice, and especially if you are going to post a link that then makes you look idiotic.

A shallow echo of the DNC.

I love how the RNC claims the Democratic party are “Georgetown cocktail party elitists”. And how the RNC are trying so hard to hijack the notion of “change”.

Well played. Not going to work.

You said: I live in Ohio, and have been to the city several times. The locals pronounce it lan-cas-ter.

From Wiki:

Lancastrians can easily spot a visitor to the area by how they pronounce the word Lancaster. Locals and people from nearby counties in Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania), Maryland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland), and Delaware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delaware) pronounce Lancaster as LANK-ister. This is unusual as most Lancasters in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) are pronounced as LAN-cast-er, though Lancashire, England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancashire,_England), and Lancasters in Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancaster,_Texas), Ohio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancaster,_Ohio), and South Carolina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancaster,_South_Carolina) also use the LANK-ister pronunciation.

Notice how your representation exactly matches MOST of the Lancasters in the US but does NOT represent Lancaster Ohio?

Regardless, you failed to tell us which one of the 88 counties in the state of Ohio that you reside in....so?

How is this relevent? Palin made a play to southern and southeastern Ohioans by recognizing someone from LANK-ister, Ohio, the only problem is that she failed with the pronunciation of the town, hence an outsider.

Is it that big a deal? No, but it was on my mind last night and I made the comment. You just chose to demonstrate that you really don't have a clue. TWICE.

Did some protesters just get in? I heard USA being chanted.. but it seemed something was going on.

People claim the Dems have their ticket upside down.. I'm beginning to think the Republicans do.

God, he's irritating to listen to.

I know how it is pronounced. I have been to the city several times. I will see if I can get some people from the city to post an audio clip online just for you.

As you said, it is no big deal. It really isn't, except to someone like you, an obvious Obama supporter, trying to denigrate a fine woman like Palin in the only way you can.

Leave the woman-bashing to the Obama campaign, as they have practice at it, and they can usually pronounce small town names (when calling them bitter).

The speech was mediocre, the delivery rehearsed. Couple good points, but nothing outside of what I expected.

The education plan, for using community colleges as a means of worker retraining, seems interesting. I would like to see the specifics on it. Other then that I didn't hear to much that was new.

I don't need any clips. I have been going there all of my life. Between Shaw's Restaurant and Mauger's Seafood, I've spent plenty of time there, not to mention that I had one class at OU- LANK-ister.

Here, call the Chamber of Commerce and see how they correct your ass.

So Mabus, since you have been there so many times, what were you doing there? You still haven't said where you live in Ohio. I suspect that you're from around Cleveland and just don't want to admit that you are talking out of your ass.

Wow! You googled a phone number!

...ring....ring...

They pronounce it Lan-kis-ter on that phone number. Call it yourself and see.

Now it's Lan-kis-ter? roflmao.

Make up your mind. Or better yet, just remember that Wiki said (correctly) that most of the US pronounce it LAN-cast-er (hmm Mabus said lan-cas-ter) and of course Wiki said (correctly) that Lancaster Ohio is LANK-ister.

Keep going Mabus you are looking rather silly.

So, you still refuse to say where in Ohio you live?

Keep posting you moron, soon enough the special olympics pix will appear? For me, you're not worth any more effort.

You gave a phone number, I called it, and that is how the message there pronounced the name.

Notice the "k" sound is still second syllable?

If you are going to attempt to source your firm, entrenched belief that Palin and others (including people that live there and have been there) are wrong in how they pronounce the name at least make sure the sources support you.

Call the number yourself, don't take it from me. Obviously you wouldn't, as you have belabored the slim "point" about colloquial pronunciation to the extreme. But call it. Hell, someone else call and listen to it.

Just get this hillbilly off my back!
