Shifting from his previous opposition to expanded offshore drilling, the Illinois senator told a Florida newspaper he could get behind a compromise with Republicans and oil companies to prevent gridlock over energy.

Ahem... shifting. Seems like he finally read an opinion poll.

Or not ... there are dems in the party that are telling him this is the best way to ensure future, readily available, bi-partisan legislation and cooperation.

You're right! Wanting to end hyper-partisan bickering is called flip-flopping these days! Let's CRITICIZE a senator that says he wants to work on compromise! This completely FLIP FLOPS his earlier, NUMEROUS statements that he desires to work ACROSS AISLES and end the partisanship in Washington!

Oh, wait. It's NOT flip flopping? Smart.

His new position is a good position.

Its the fact that up until just now, he was vehemently against more drilling. People had been trying to work on compromises, he said no... until congress left on vacation anyways... convenient timing, he agrees once it is too late to have a timely vote...

Except that the issue will remain afterwards when they're back in session, and he'll still be a senator, responsible for his statement? He's agreed to compromise, and people won't forget it. There's also the chance the special session could become a reality, too.

Who cares if he flipped? It's the end result that matters, not how any one party got there right?

It goes to believability and character. Obama can say he holds a position now, to help himself get elected, but as with all politicians, the voter must weigh the odds that the politician will follow through on his campaign promises. For that he must consider why the politician changed his mind, the timing and motivation for it.

And really, one of Obama's core campaign pillars is "I was against the Iraq war from the beginning - this shows I have good judgement." In which case the fact that he was the last one to the compromise on drilling party should indicate he has bad judgement, and that makes it a valid campaign issue.

If you don't like the person, it's called 'flip-flopping'.

If you like the person, it's considered 'compromise'.

Are you referring to Nancy Pelosi who said she won't bring up a drilling vote because she has to "save the planet" with her gavel?

Bi-partisan indeed.

Not unless Pelosi's ovaries dropped into a sack of flesh and her vagina suddenly became an "outie".

Thinking about Nancy's vagina should be against forum policy. Enjoy the demerits.

You sick fucking bastard.
