WASHINGTON - Rep. Gary Ackerman might be the only member of Congress who really knows what a naval blockade feels like - thanks to peace activists who early yesterday morning gathered around his Potomac River houseboat with a naval blockade of their own.

It wasn't much, a mini-flotilla of three canoes and an inflatable raft - not even enough to surround Ackerman's aquatic home. But the 15 activists from Code Pink wanted to encourage Ackerman (D-Jamaica Estates) to tone down his rhetoric against Iran.

After enduring nearly 30 minutes of sirens, whistles, drumbeats and megaphone chanting, Ackerman - wearing his trademark carnation in his lapel and a floral tie - emerged with a kiss and a hug for the ringleader.

But he said he would go ahead with a resolution calling for stiffer sanctions against Iran.

I understand people who are antiwar on moral reasons. I don't agree with them, but I understand where they are coming from.

I cannot understand being both anti-war and anti-sanction. Sanctions ARE the diplomatic solution. They said they want it to be more like North Korea... there were sanctions on North Korea, North Korea was so poor they needed to get food aid and other basics from the south. North Korea, despite being run by a crazy mother fucker, also never really called for the destruction of another country.

The only reason the overall UN hasn't managed to put more sanctions on Iran is not out of peace or compassion or anything like that, but because Russia & China do business with Iran and they don't want to lose that money. Its all about the $$.

So these nutjobs were there protesting a Democrat over sanctions. Crazier by the day.

Of course it's all about the money. Money creates political will. Political will is power. Welcome to a capitalist world.

Because it's much easier to label anyone protesting something that you don't agree with as a "nutjob" and "crazy" than addressing their concerns. Had our current administration not had a vendetta and personal agenda to carry out, we might actually have the political will and economic status to do something about an actual threat, Iran.

I don't necessarily agree with them. But it's inconsiderate to marginalize the efforts of people doing what they believe in. Labeling them "crazy nutjobs" is unproductive. What they're trying to do is prevent another unnecessary war, costing more US soldiers and more US dollars.

A war with Iran might BE inevitable, but it is going to be far more costly in terms of both dollars, lives and impact on oil prices, than either the war in Afghanistan or Iraq.

We have a peace vigil in my town every Wednesday night; Code Pink would be laughed at.

Yea. I don't neccessarily disagree with their positions, but Code Pink are nutjobs. Those are the people who protest recruiting stations in Berkley right?

I fully support sanctions on Iran, and military action if necessary. We need to step up the pressure on China and Russia. It's getting there.. but it's ridiculous that years have passed with no traction in the security council.

Well, there are legitimate reasons to have problems with military recruiting. Dishonesty being the frontmost. Focusing on the most urban, poorest neighborhoods to recruit is another.

I was a member of Code Pink: I used to play SOCOM II online a bunch. Good game. On-topic; spammers, for example, are people who throw too many grenades.
