I've just been doing a lot of reading lately (see other thread) of essays by African American writers talking about how growing up, or even as adults, they were denigrated by their peers for "acting white" when trying to educate themselves, read, go to college, etc. The point being that one of the key problems in (some) the African American community is the perception that education and hard work are bad things.
