CHICAGO - Antoin Rezko, a once-powerful fund-raiser who helped propel the career of Senator Barack Obama, was found guilty yesterday by a federal jury of 16 criminal counts, including fraud, money-laundering, and bribery in an influence-peddling scheme that touched the highest levels of the administration of Governor Rod R. Blagojevich of Illinois.

Rezko, 52, was acquitted on eight additional charges, including attempted extortion.

While Obama's friendship with Rezko has been debated on the campaign trail, no evidence surfaced in the courtroom to suggest that the senator was involved in any wrongdoing.

In reaction to the conviction, Obama expressed disappointment and sought to make a larger point about corruption.

"I'm saddened by today's verdict," Obama said in a statement. "This isn't the Tony Rezko I knew, but now he has been convicted by a jury on multiple charges that once again shine a spotlight on the need for reform. I encourage the General Assembly to take whatever steps are necessary to prevent these kinds of abuses in the future."

During the Democratic primary race, Senator Hillary Clinton repeatedly called attention to Obama's relationship with Rezko in an effort to raise questions about her rival's judgment.

About an hour after the verdict was announced, the Republican National Committee began circulating an e-mail message titled "Rezko: Obama's Longtime Friend and Money Man" that sought to link the two over a 20-year period.

In Chicago, the verdict was seen as a serious blow to Blagojevich, already damaged by the descriptions of pay-to-play politics that emerged in testimony during the trial, which took more than two months, sometimes involving him directly.

Blagojevich, 51, a second-term Democrat who ran as a reformer, has not been charged, but the trial revolved around the inner workings of his administration. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Rezko, a friend and adviser to Blagojevich, as well as one of his top fund-raisers, was accused of using his influence to corrupt two state boards in a scheme to collect millions of dollars in kickbacks from businesses that wanted to do business with the state.

Prosecutors described Rezko as "the man behind the curtain, pulling the strings." Rezko's chief lawyer, Joseph J. Duffy, said he would appeal yesterday's decision.

"We are obviously very disappointed in the jury's verdict today," Duffy said. "We strongly believe in Rezko's innocence."

Obama, whose name rarely came up during the trial, has been criticized for his involvement with Rezko in property transactions related to his home.

As Obama was buying his house in 2005, Rezko's wife, Rita, bought an adjacent empty lot. She later sold the Obamas a portion of the lot that enabled them to expand their yard. Obama has since called the transactions "boneheaded."

According to Obama's campaign, Mr. Rezko may have raised as much as $250,000 for him over the years; the campaign has donated $159,085 in contributions from Rezko, his family, and associates to charity, the amount the campaign says can be "reasonably credited to Rezko's political support."

This will probably get used in the arsenal (limited as it is) against Obama. The important details are likely to be overlooked. The biggest being the grand sum of 250 grand contributed by Rezko.

All things considered, that's not enough to buy a politician in the modern era ... hell, it barely scratches the surface of the grand total of campaign funds Obama has raised since entering the political arena.

All said and done, this is about as big as Rev Wright .... which is nearly a non-story. It just depends on how it's spun at this point and how Obama will respond. What's the bigger story, a past pittance donated by a newly convicted person ... or hefty sums and services rendered by lobbyist and those they represent?

Obama didn't get very negative with Clinton and truth be told ... he could have buried her after NH. The question is, will he respond in kind to the swift boaters or McCain directly, or will he continue with the same campaign model he ran in the primaries?

Yeah, it's kind of like pulling out the old Whitewater stuff back when Clinton was running. I don't know that I like those kind of tactics. Actually talk about the issues.

I'm all tin foil today so I'm totally imagining this was a news story that was published in a deal for H. Dawg, once she stepped down, as an exchange between political syndicates. Tin foil does not taste good when it touches your fillings or lungs.

I really hope middle school history book-publishing corporations don't make Obama seem super pasty in the back of our texts, where all the presidents are on a timeline.

Elected officials in IL have been on a corruption witch hunt since former Gov Ryan was convicted.

In IL, probably just as in most states, our Governors, US Senators, and electoral votes are largely elected in Chicago and the surrounding burbs. The only thing left to the rest of the state is to stock our US reps and state legislature with locals that actually represent the rest of populous (south of Kankakee county).

The Ryan investigation (and conviction) occurred as a result of Blagojevich taking office and the center of IL politics shifting from Springfield to Chicago. Since then the down staters have been out for blood ... hence the Rezco investigaion and trial.

We can substitute Rezko for Kevin Bacon and play the game ... and there will be direct and indirect connections to Obama. Hell, the top three would be Blagojevich, Daley, and Axelrod.

Just to shorten it up ... Blagojevich was finally neutered with this investigation and is facing a real possibility of sharing a cell with Ryan. If that happens, Daley is next .... and if there is even a whiff of Obama being involved .... you can bet your ass he'll have his day looking at the chopping block. It's not all hugs and kisses for Obama in IL. Three to four counties away from Cook county in any direction (except north) you run into shades of red and purple. There's no real animosity, but there's no endless river of love either.

All in all this article makes a very weak link between Rezko and Obama, there may be more ... but it's not likely. Similarly there have been a few articles as of late about Obama's first IL Senate campaign .... where his democratic opponents were forced off the ballot because he challenged their petitions. The articles attempt to villanize Obama an paint his then opponents (namely the incumbent Alice Palmer) as victims.

Hellfuckinglo ... It's Chicago, it's politics, it's Chicago politics .... where the dead vote. Show me an elected official that hasn't challenged a petition and I'll show you the easter bunny. If he was able to knock out the competition .... it's because their petitions were loaded with signatures of those outside of the ward, dead, forged, or fictional. If you didn't try to challenge in return .... you were a retard and shouldn't hold an office of any sort. If you did challenge and found nothing .... but pages upon pages of your petition were thrown out .... lie steal and cheat better or actually go out and convince people in your ward to sign the fucking thing.

Anyway ... /rant.

I'm afraid Tsa'ah is right about Chicago politics. Obama is a Chicago politician. About the only worse pedigree is New Orleans. It's going to be impossible for Obama NOT to be associated with corrupt politicians.

He's an inconvenient fellow. I'm glad he went down. Politicians usually don't look over somebody too closely when they're making big donations.

McCain took a fair amount from Abramoff, for example.

I don't know .... why not read some alternative articles (http://www.google.com/search?gbv=2&hl=en&safe=off&q=Abramoff+mccain&start=10&sa=N) and make up your own mind?

Hellfuckinglo ... It's Chicago, it's politics, it's Chicago politics .... where the dead vote.I've always maintained that we have one of the most corrupt political machines in the nation. Collectively speaking on a state and federal level. It's quite sickening, and even worse, you start to get used to it after a while.

Our Bridgeport was like the birthing petrie dish of corrupt mayors for a while, but that's politics, and you can certainly find corruption anywhere you look hard enough.

I looked before I posted, and I cannot find anything saying that McCain ever accepted contributions from Abramoff. My failure to locate any articles, however, is not proof that McCain accepted money from Abramoff. Since I cannot prove a negative, I would like to see the original assertion either backed up or retracted.
