I just got this email today from a guy I hired in my hotel days. He's now a General Manager.

Hi,

I just wanted to share the happiest day of my life.....

"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."

Today I spoke, and felt the power of these words and became an American.
Those of you who know me on a more personal basis, know that this truly was a dream come true.

I feel so proud, elated, almost invincible..... I hope all of you who were born here have the same feeling abut what it means to be an American ....I traveled around the world and lived in many countries....but only here I feel at home, only here I feel free....only here I can reach for the stars....

There are so many feelings I cannot describe ... except to say:

" ....... Today, there is one more American"

God Bless America!

I wonder how he pulled that off? It's too difficult to become a naturalized citizen in the United States.

How dare you push your theocratic morality on this unsuspecting guy. For shame.

Let us all worship Paul Giamatti's dynamic stage versatility along with the dollar. Siege heil!

INDEED.

Dude people: It is fucking incredible. If we hadn't annexed shit and murdered the entire race of Natives, none of this could be possible, and, as we know, TV is our salvation to becoming the ultimate webbed-foot mammal: Channel surfing our way to the top!

Last Sunday was the premier of the first two episodes. They are on On Demand.

And to address Stan... I hear what you are saying and I am a pretty good swimmer. Its an enjoyable dramatization none-the-less.

Funny little Americans.

They actually portray what a lot of ne'er-do-well wastrel douchebags from Massachusetts (later to become Red Sox fans) were, in more probable actuality, during the time of British Colonialists' naval presence. It's not what you learn in most North American high schools about how only fluffy snowballs were thrown at a Bocce Ball court and then the Brits anally raped everyone.

What sucks is that it had to take some dude's book and thesis (concurrently what is now the movie) of investigative reporting to open my eyes to this covered-up bullshit. I seriously thought the above paragraph was the full extent of the Boston Massacre until I watched this mini-series and did a little research myself.

Clove: On-Demand, for effity-eff's-effin'-sake!

The History channel also has a great series on the American Revolution by the same title. It's pretty vanilla (vanilla meaning that it's a straight forward "This happened, then that happened. Afterward, this happened"), but I learned a ton from it.

While I'm mentioning it, I'm currently in the middle of Ken Burns' Civil War. It's a social history and can be a little frustrating if you like vanilla history. But I'm a big fan of his, so no real criticism.

Does anyone know if iTunes has the John Adams series?

Er, wh'bout it?

HBO on Demand isn't available from my satellite provider. And even it if it were, I'm so not getting it just so I don't miss the beginning of a mini-series. My DVR works just fine, I just didn't set it when I should have :P

Yeah, TV guides are harder to read than Braille. Sorry :-\

Edited to add: I'm not being pedantic or sarcastic. The TV Guide is Satan spawn.

Yeah but mostly I'm just lazy. I really don't like to watch a lot of TV. I do like to watch a lot of movies (as my incessant movie quoting demonstrates). I could have set my DVR to record it weeks before it started and the search feature on my receiver is excellent- I just don't think about "snatching" TV to my DVR much. The majority of the time I set it to record a later showing of a movie I missed the beginning of, or one that's starting around when I want to go to bed. About the only thing I ever think to setup in advance is:

Battlestar (yes I have my season 3 DVDs! W00t!)
Heroes
The Office
