Michelle Obama: "For the First Time in My Adult Lifetime, I'm Really Proud of My Country"
Speaking in Wisconsin today, would-be First Lady Michelle Obama said, "For the first time in my adult lifetime I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."
The whole quote in context is: "What we've learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback and let me tell you something, for the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I've seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it's made me proud. And I feel privileged to be a part of even witnessing this, traveling around states all over this country and being reminded that there is more that unites us than divides us..."

Who cares? Your entire post essentially said: A woman had an opinion. If we stopped and replied thirty times to every post that was ultimately the same, this forum would've been the next e-sensation due to the activity alone.

You're an idiot. Maybe you should make a new thread about how dumb you are.
Let the adults talk politics.. run along now.

So the woman has been traveling the country campaigning for president with her husband and has been inspired by witnessing hopeful people . . . and you still find a way to criticise her. Nice.

It was a stupid thing to say.. as it is offensive to some people who are proud and have been proud to be Americans from the start.

The stupid part was on Michelle Obama's.. saying something stupid. This really was the first time in her adult life where she was proud to be an American? WTF!?
McCain's wife came out and said “I just wanted to make the statement that I have and always will be proud of my country,”
We're talking about the potential First Lady not being proud of her country until now.
It's just a stupid comment to make during a close nomination process.
If you want an example of stupid spin, see your signatures, dumbass.

You can be "proud of your family" when you're a kid and you look up to your grandpa -- but it's an entirely different than being "proud of your kid" when you travel the country and see a nation hoping for change.
I think you're stretching a positive message to its limits to find a semantic weakness. But that's just my opinion.

If this was such a stretch by me... why again is it showing up on liberal 'news' programs like Today Show?
Again.. it was a dumb thing to say.. I'm not quite ready to say Clinton will gain traction from it.. but it doesn't change the fact that it was a dumb thing to say. If it wasn't a dumb thing to say.. people wouldn't be talking about it as such.

Edit: There are numerous times I have NOT been proud of my country in the past 8 years, so I find Mrs. McCain's comments more patently ridiculous, jingoistic, and patriotism-for-the-sake-of-attacking than Michelle Obama's.

On topic, I can understand how someone can love something yet not be proud of it. I without doubt love America but there are certain things I am not proud of in our long history. If I was a minority, it would be even more justifiable, especially if you're old enough to remember when things really sucked.
I think Chris Rock said it best, and I'm just paraphrasing here...
"America is the greatest country in the world, even if you're black. You just got to look at things a little different. If you're black, America is like the Uncle that paid your way through college....but molested you as a kid."

I think the distinction can be even more subtle between two types of pride. There is a pride in heritage, in being part of something. I think that's more of a passive pride and for the most part you never lose it. Then there is the pride originating from a positive behavior. I think Mrs. McCain is talking about the former while Mrs. Obama is talking about the latter.

There is a huge difference of not being proud of your country on certain occasions and being the first time ever being proud of your country.
One is understandable. One is just dumb.

Again. Big difference between not being proud of America in certain instances and being proud for the very first time at the age of 44.

It's almost like Mrs. Obama grew up in a country where Presidential candidates got elected on the basis of divisive and hate-filled racism.

It's pretty fucking sad that there is so little on the Obamas to dredge up that the media and certain slappies have to bring up shit like this and pull it way the hell out of context to puss about.
Well...whatever gives them a chance to win in Ohio and Texas and November....

This is dumb ..Look how many times McCain switches from side to side on topics. He's unpredictable, and a reincarnation of Bush! He uses words repetitively ( Not slogans in his campaign, niether), like "my friends", or "Ideals". The only reason this nominee looks decent is because he has no competition, and hardly anyone is watching him like Hillary to Obama.

Best line ever coming from you.. Mr. Bush Basher.
And please.. there is SOO much more that we can discuss about Obama if you would like. We can start by his socialist agenda and subsequent cost of campaign promises.. then move over to his lack of bringing about any meaningful legislation in the Senate.. trust me, there's plenty.

That's a great outline.
ParkBandit, could you please address the following substantive issues in a meaningful way:
(1) Obama's socialist agenda: What is it? Is it good or is it bad? How much will it cost? Where will the revenue come from?
(2) Obama has been a senator for roughly three years, what sort of legislation has he proposed? What types of legislation do junior senators usually propose?
Kudos to PB for putting the quote in it’s entire context... but let me ask you this.
Semantics aside why would that offend someone who was proud ten years ago, or twenty, or however longer? Wouldn’t the reaction be something along the lines of, “Great! Glad to have you aboard! We all feel the same!”?

To me, it shows a deep dislike for your country if the first time you have ever been proud of it is at age 44. So, born in 1964.. she mentioned adult life.. so minus 18 years. So, from 1982 to 2008, there was never a time for her to be proud to be an American? I can think of many instances where I was proud to be an American during that time.
