A private religious school in Kansas does not want women refereeing boys' basketball games. A statement by the school said (http://www.kansascity.com/340/story/495216.html), "Sports for boys are seen as training for the battlefield of life where the boys will need to fight at times through great difficulties. As such, it is more appropriate that it be men who train and direct the boys in these sports programs for only men can teach the boys to be men, just as only women can truly teach girls to be women."
The state of Kansas is investigating (http://www.kmbc.com/news/15335371/detail.html) the policy and may penalize the school.
I do not agree with the school. But it is a private school that is basing its decision on religious beliefs that are shared by a large number of people. The state should not interfere with the school's exercise of its religion.

I said I don't agree with the school's policy.
I also don't agree that the state has the authority to force the school to change its religious beliefs. It would be a sad day in this country if a state could control the religious practices of private organizations.
I dont agree with their policy, but its a private school.
As long as their policy doesnt break any local, state, or federal laws there's nothing to be done about it... Except for those who disagree to use another school.

So far, slavery has been the only private behavior that the Constitution can regulate. No one has a right to own slaves. However, other than that, a private institute can do whatever the hell it wants as long as it breaks no laws towards non-members.

Why can't women referee the games? The justification they offer doesn't make any sense; sports are the training ground for the battle of life for boys, so there shouldn't be any women involved in sports?
The school doesn't get to decided who the refs are for their games. If that was the case, I'd require all refs for games that my school plays must be biased in my favor.
The school is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, so they must play by the rules that every other school has to follow. If they feel this is unacceptable, they can withdraw from the KSHSAA and start a separate association where they don't allow refs that are female or black or Jewish or short or near-sighted.
The KSHSAA is not infringing on the school's right to practice religion. The school is attempting to infringe on the rights of its opponents to have an impartial referee.
