Coulter wants Clinton over McCain

Ann Coulter said Thursday she'd back Hillary Clinton over John McCain.
(CNN) — In the latest sign that a conservative backlash is starting to build against John McCain, conservative commentator Ann Coulter said Thursday she is prepared to vote for Hillary Clinton over the Arizona senator in a general election match up.
Speaking on Fox's "Hannity and Colmes," Coulter took aim at the GOP frontrunner, and suggested he was little more than a Republican in name only.
"If you are looking at substance rather than if there is an R or a D after his name, manifestly, if he's our candidate, than Hillary is going to be our girl, because she's more conservative than he is," Coulter said. "I think she would be stronger on the war on terrorism."
Coulter took aim at McCain's positions — particularly his fervent anti-torture stance — and said he and Clinton differ little on the issues. Coulter also said she is prepared to campaign on Clinton's behalf should McCain win the party's nomination.
"John McCain is not only bad for Republicanism, which he definitely is — he is bad for the country," she said.
Coulter is the latest high profile conservative to express dismay with McCain's surging candidacy. Talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh said Wednesday McCain's rise was the product of a 'fractured' conservative base and an "uninspiring" GOP presidential field.
"He is not the choice of conservatives, as opposed to the choice of the Republican establishment — and that distinction is key," Limbaugh continued. "The Republican establishment, which has long sought to rid the party of conservative influence since Reagan, is feeling a victory today as well as our friends in the media."
McCain has long been at odds with conservative members of his party. — Exit polls from the early-primary states have shown the he has consistently lost among those primary voters who identify themselves as conservative. But he passed a key test Tuesday in winning Florida's primary, the first early contest that only allowed registered Republicans to participate.
Reacting to criticisms from his party's most conservative quarters, McCain told the San Francisco Gate Thursday, "I'll continue to reach out to all in the party, try to unite the party, until everybody realizes that the only way we're going to defeat the Democratic candidate is through a united party."

Coulter does have a point. We think that McCain's strength is his national defense.. but is it? He wants to close down Guantanamo Bay and have the prisoners tried like US citizens.. he wants to eliminate anything even remotely close to torture... except for a 'timebomb' situation.. then his answer is for the President to just pardon the 'offender'.
And don't even get me started on his domestic record. Whenever I see a "McCain" on any legislation, it's usually followed by a bleeding heart liberal's name. McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy?
McCain is a Republican in name only.. and always has been. His actions are much more aligned with the Democratic Party. I see very little difference between him and his close friend Hillary.

Seriously, you accuse liberals of parsing fine points - you've now said constitutional rights are only applicable to valid U.S. citizens, EVEN THOUGH THE MOST CONSERVATIVE SCOTUS EVER has said it must apply to Gitmo detainees, and you've said that people we've caught in battle are NOT POWs, but I'm sure you prefer enemy combatants.

Or that blacks were not real men?The "all men" phrase comes from the Declaration of Independence, and in fact is intended to apply to the entire world (and for that matter anywhere persons exist). I quote, with certain added emphases to make the distinction clear:
"That to secure these rights [that is: life, liberty, etc.], Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."
This is a universal theory of government which the rest of the Declaration applies to the particular case of the British Colonies.
You would have been much better off trying to classify POWs as outside the "governed" group.
The US has always held that POWs don't have certain rights. Nothing new here.
On-topic, when McCain won Florida my friend called me and said he can't vote for McCain and he probably just won't vote, which is very odd for him as he's big on the political process. I probably won't vote for him if he wins the nomination either, I'll just vote Libertarian. If someone has stupid policies that will mess up our country I'd rather it happen under a Democrat administration than have a so-called Republican in charge. I'm also worried that McCain seems like he might die in office, he's already 71. I know Reagan was almost as old as this guy, but he didn't live as hard a life.
I still hope Mitt Romney pulls out the nomination. I think he's the only Republican candidate who has a chance to beat Hillary. If Obama wins the nomination I don't think anyone can beat him so it might all be a moot point anyway.

The treatment of POWs is governed by the Geneva Conventions, which the U.S. are bound to. Bush tries to do a run around on it by calling them "enemy combatants", but even the SCOTUS saw through that, and says the conventions apply, which specifically forbid torture. That's why you now see the fight to say waterboarding is somehow not torture.
