View Full Version : Democratic Party Implosion?

With Ted Kennedy endorsing Obama and critizing the Clintons...
... is the Democratic Party at risk of being split right down the middle?
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article3267131.ece
I liked this opening paragraph: "Barack Obama yesterday paraded a trio of Kennedy clan endorsements, evidence that large sections of the Democratic establishment are now severing ties with the dominant force in the party for 16 years — Hillary and Bill Clinton."
.
If Obama and Hillary go neck & neck through "Super Tuesday" and through to the Convention...
... it seems rather plausible that Democrats on the losing side will be far more likely to not vote at all in the General Elections, particulary as the personal attacks step up, leaving those supporting the defeated candidate uninspired to vote for the opponent (and I don't think any Democrats "hate" any of the primary Republican candidates, at least not nearly as close as Republicans "hate" Hillary).
.
Karl Rove = Genius
(just had to throw that in there... this was all masterminded by him!)
The Republican Party does not really seem that divisive, even with four primary candidates, with the campaigning being done mostly with gloves kept on (excepting Romney who has been aggressive with attacks, which has incidentally united the other 3 candidates in disliking him).
.
So come the General Election... I think we'll see a stronger Republican drive to get whoever the candidate is elected, than we'll see with the Democrats, with Hillary supporters staying home if it's Obama, and vice versa (granted that some supporters will still vote Democrat to beat Republican, but I'd say it's more like 50% stay home and the other 50% go ahead and vote Obama).
.
4 more years of a Republican President ahead!

Let me tell you what I believe. I believe that Morpheus means more to me than he does to you. I believe if you are really serious about rescuing him, you are going to need my help. And since I am the ranking officer on this ship, if you don't like it... I believe you can go to hell. Because you're not going anywhere else.
Tank, load us up.
Out of curiosity, how was this masterminded by Rove?
I mean, if credit is due I would like the details.

There will be one day, godammit, where the PC will not have a single political thread.
Right around when Savants are released.

I don't think the author of that particular article understands voter turn out and what that potentially translates into. If he doesn't understand that, I'm sure a demographic and political breakdown of the ballots will be completely over his head.
The GOP, especially those that are claiming a lack of devisiveness, are clapping their hands in glee when the top two dem candidates unload on each other .... but they're ignoring the turn out.
Right now, in all seriousness, the GOP has got to be pulling for Hillary. She's pulling in the geriatric and female vote.
Facing her in the general election equals plenty of skeletons, and swaying some of her base to vote against her ... and I dare say that Hillary will have a turn out that votes against her without much swaying if MI is any indicator.
The GOP isn't going to be able to sway the black vote, the young vote, the in dependant vote, or the never voted before vote.
The best possible match up the GOP has if Obama attains the nomination is McCain, and even then .... no candidate has been able to inspire the turn outs Obama has.
I wouldn't print your "4 more years" bumper stickers yet, there's a good chance that you'll have to wait a decade and a half before they're relevant.

A white guy from the South heading a splinter group from the Democrats with racial overtones? Unprecedented!!!

Anything that works in the GOP's favor is automatically due to Rove's doing, no?

Uh, no matter who wins the primary, I'm coming out to vote in the general. That article seems rather idiotic.
Especially when you consider the GOP Evangelical/Fiscal Conservative split, lolcakes.

QFT. I think, if Huckabee got the nomination (of course he wont), that you'd see far more Republicans crossing over to vote for Hillary. Those fiscal conservatives who can't stand Hillary, and to be sure there are a lot, would just vote for Bloomberg or Ron Paul in the general. Oh god, I WISH Huckabee had a chance in hell to win the republican nomination. Hopefully the "good" republicans (fiscal conservatives) would finally reclaim their party from the modern-day pharisees.

You underestimate the hatred that Republicans have for the Clintons. It's amazing that people are finally saying "Wow, Bill and Hillary sure do lie a lot"
If it came down to Huckabee and Clinton, I would grudgingly cast my vote for Huckabee.
I just saw a newsflash that a deal is in the works to have Edwards drop out of the race in exchange for a cabinet position for Obama. Why would he do that? I thought Edwards was splintering votes off from Clinton.. thus helping Obama.
God.. Edwards would be the last person I would ever invite into my administration. Hell, he even makes this deal sound like a greasy lawyer deal.

He should make Edwards Attorney General. It is the sleazy lawyer position. Edwards was previously siphoning off Obama votes percentage wise... at least that's what (I don't really trust any of them but Hillary sure does) the polls said.
Obama should win just due to how unifying a force Hillary is to Republicans. She's like The Great Satan to them.
Hillary is to Republicans as Rove is to Democrats.

I think it is for the Attorney General position... Robert Novak reporting it.. so take that with skepticism. It could just be a fishing expedition for him.

I don't think the turnouts for either party indicated problems. Republican was down a bit, Democrat up a bit. This will be a good contest.

Hilary is definitely the GOP's dream: ignites their base voters...at the same time democrats voting for Hilary are going to be a lot less enthusiastic that those voting for Obama (=turnout).
And guess what? With the economy in shambles, no one even mentions the war anymore...

Fuck me... Paul and Clinton obviously wouldn't get my vote.. so it would be down to Bloomberg and Huckabee. I would have to read more about Bloomberg to give you an honest answer.

Fishing expedition. It's a felony to promise a Cabinet position in exchange for political support. And no one would be stupid enough to actually make such a deal and expect it to stay secret longer than 10 seconds.
I don't know if Edwards would be right for the AG job anyway. But I don't know what he worked on in the Judiciary Committee while he was in the Senate.
