Backlash's Law

In light of a number of recent discussions, I'd like to porpose a new rule of thumb for posting on political topics: Backlash's Law. In its purest form, it means:


As a political discussion on the Player’s Corner grows longer, the probability of a comparison or accusation involving Backlash approaches one.

Backlash’s posting is often cited in online discussions as a caution against the use of inflammatory rhetoric, exaggerated comparisons, or poor thought out posts.

Backlash's law does not make any statement as to whether any particular reference or comparison to Backlash might be appropriate, but only asserts that one arising is increasingly probable in areas. It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate in non political discussions in the Player's Corner, 875000 has argued that overuse of Backlash comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact.

However, Backlash's law itself can be abused, as a distraction or diversion, that fallaciously miscasts an opponent's argument as hyperbole, especially if the comparisons made by the argument are actually appropriate. 875000 argued that Backlash's law is often misused to ridicule even valid comparisons. When it happens, he asserts, the thread is going to start either degenerating into a long flamewar over Backlash or accusations that a poster may, in fact, secretly be him. Either way, the thread is effectively over, and you can safely move on.

So, what this means in practical terms:


o If someone brings up Backlash in political conversation when it
wasn't necessary or germane without it necessarily being an
insult, it's probably about time for the thread to end.
o If someone brings up Backlash in general conversation when it
was vaguely related but is basically being used as an insult,
the speaker can be considered to be flaming and not debating.
o If someone brings up Backlash in any conversation that has been
going on too long for one of the parties, it can be used as
a fair excuse to end the thread and declare victory for the
other side.

The closest we're going to get to fixing stupid would be to prevent it from reproducing, or infecting others. A swift swing of a baseball bat could decrease the average stupidity of living human beings.
