View Full Version : Obama chides Clinton for playing gender card

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama, the only black candidate for president, accused rival Hillary Clinton on Friday of hiding behind her gender after she was pummeled in a debate with six male candidates.
"I am assuming and I hope that Sen. Clinton wants to be treated like everybody else," the Illinois senator said in an interview with NBC's "Today Show."
"When we had a debate back in Iowa awhile back, we spent I think the first 15 minutes of the debate hitting me on various foreign policy issues. And I didn't come out and say: 'Look, I'm being hit on because I look different from the rest of the folks on the stage'," he said.
"I assumed it was because there were real policy differences there, and I think that has to be the attitude that all of us take. We're not running for the president of the city council. We're running for the presidency of the United States."
He was speaking a day after New York Sen. Clinton -- the only woman running for president -- urged women voters to rally behind her against "the boys club of presidential politics."
Obama and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, who are both trailing Clinton in polls by a wide margin, attacked the former first lady's honesty, leadership and ability to win the November 2008 election in a Tuesday night debate.
Obama noted on Friday that Clinton is widely viewed as a tough figure in national politics.
"So it doesn't make sense for her, after having run that way for eight months, the first time that people start challenging her point of view, that suddenly she backs off and says: 'Don't pick on me'," he said.
"That is not obviously how we would expect her to operate if she were president."

I was at this speech. In fact, I was on the stage behind Hillary while she spoke at Wellesley. There's even some pictures of me behind her, though they're not flattering so I won't post them. ;)
And this seems to be a direct manipulation of what she said. The address was literally given to Wellesley students...an all female body. I was only there because the campaign people wanted guys in the stage backdrop to een it out. And she thanked the college for giving her the ability to "be a strong woman in the all boys club of presidential politics." She wasn't hiding behind her femaleness at all.

Sounds like you're doing some manipulation as well. ;)
The New York Times reported that Clinton's campaign officials tried to create sympathy for Hillary the same way they did when Republican Rick Lazio confronted her during their 2000 Senate race.
A Clinton adviser told the Washington Post that, "Ultimately, it was six guys against her, and she came off as one strong woman." A headline on the Drudge Report said: "Scorn: As the Men Gang Up."

I don't see Hillary using the gender card any different than someone else using the race card, or someone like Bush using the religious card. People use the tactics they have to get the votes, not sure what the big deal is with that.
What I didn't appreciate was Obama criticizing one of his own. I realize it's even more politics, but seeing as how IMO he doesn't have a snowball chance in hell to get nominated, he shouldn't be shooting down others who have a shot either, even if it IS Hillary.

I don't think she played any sort of card. She was simply saying that a Wellesley education prepared her for the male-dominated field of politics, by empowering her. The whole theme of the event could be summed up by the idea that anyone could be President.
And I criticized Bush for not letting anyone into the speech in general. I would fully expect him (and any politician) to have the people ON THE STAGE, PROVIDING THE BACK DROP to their speech, to be carefully orchastrated.

Eh. Not certain I agree with this. In all three cases, I think it has a corrosive effect on the political process.
It tends to make people become disaffected, which depresses participation in the political process.
The ones that remain are more likely to make decisions on a more visceral -- as opposed to rational -- basis.
Plus, there is a double standard in play. If someone runs a campaign centered around the concept of "You can't criticize me -- I am a white male!" they would be justifiably criticized.
What I didn't appreciate was Obama criticizing one of his own. I realize it's even more politics, but seeing as how IMO he doesn't have a snowball chance in hell to get nominated, he shouldn't be shooting down others who have a shot either, even if it IS Hillary.
Again, I disagree. Politics is supposed to be a marketplace for ideas, with votes being the ultimate currency. People should be allowed to voice their disagreements. Remove that ability and we step close to the Soviet style politburo, where we are just expected to pull the lever for a candidate chosen by some backroom committee.
The reality is, he -- and others like him -- don't stand a chance unless they do something like this. Political parties want to annoint a standard bearer and discourage competition.

Are you fucking kidding me? Have you been intentionally drinking leaded water these last few months?
Clinton is ahead because no one running against her has bothered to call her on her flip flips from one debate to the next. No one has bothered to call her on the whole "we both have vaginas ... you should vote for me". No one has bothered to call her on her White House experience.
The numbers show it has taken it's toll.
In this debate they were calling her left and right. They pointed out her voting record vs her campaigning rhetoric. They pointed out her "pulling a Bush" when she tried to claim The Clinton Library Archives pose a difficulty in her ability to release documents relevant to her experience as first lady.
She was trounced like any other politician running for office.
This is nothing like being questioned by the media over a pin, or a snapshot of not covering the left side of your chest with your right hand and some bullshit story attached to it.
How about you specifically say what he should shut the fuck up about. You're essentially saying he should just drop out of the race.
Iowa is around the corner. 4 years ago Dean had this Clinton like lead and Kerry was trailing so far being (further than Obama) it really didn't make sense for him to stay in the race. Iowa changed that. This is exactly why Edwards and Obama have taken the kid gloves off. They have months and months of ammo to use and they're unloading it now.

'The Media' certainly isn't GOP biased by any far stretch unless you're calling Faux News or O'Reily 'The Media' The media is politically biased and will sell slander on both sides of the street as long as it drives revenue.
There has been more Clinton coverage because she is the frontrunner. If it were Mr 9/11 who lead the poles then guess who's coming to dinner?
Yes, the Dem race is going to be highly published because it is going to get the dirtiest. Didn't anybody else wonder how it had stayed so civil so long? You save your ammo until the primaries and unload, that is when the front runner is most disadvantaged and least prepared.
Same thing is happening to Julie Boy on the GOP side, it will probably stay a little quieter because the dems will sell more copy and add space.
Fortunately for his competition the man has a lot of easily impugned characteristics. While he is appealing to most centrists who vote and pay very little attention to party politics, he's practically radioactive.
If he makes it through the primaries I will be thrilled, I personally think that he's the only candidate that Hillary can be elected against. Not that I want her too win but I'll take it against anyone who's answer is 'I don't know' or 'I(u)D is a theory too" when talking about evolution.
Let me be frank I don't care if you believe the magic sky wizard created the world and Jesus rode dinosaurs, homosexuality is a sin against nature and 'Merica' is God's own personal blessed country. Have at it, personally when I'm feeling a little 'wild' I like to put on some Stones and cook naked. Really it's your world what ever gets your goat provided it's not harmful to others, your freedoms stop where your fist ends and my nose begins. I digress... point is you don't get to lead the United States or set educational curriculum standards if you ascribe to any of the above, not yours! As a consolation prize we will give you the states of Wyoming and New Jersey, also we’ll see about expanding the NASCAR circuit to 4 nights a week.
As to Obama being a political retard, I don't really know what you're basing that off of but I'd love to respond if you have an idea where you're going with that one.
Kerry lost the Election, Bush did not win it. Gore on the other hand at least won the popular vote... Not counting dead people in Florida and Diebold voting machines of course.

Eh, I?m not a Hillary Fan at all. If I was a lawyer, and I billed my company 300 hours on a case my husband may have gotten indicted regarding, I wouldn?t just forget the details in court (whitewater).
I don?t agree with a lot of what Obama is saying, but I admire the enthusiasm and the fact that I honestly believe he cares. I don?t have the same faith in Hillary at all.
Giuliani is a solid leader for NYC, but I think at times he is too much of a pitbull for the international community, and his social views are a lot more acceptable for me than Bush. If I had to pick a leader for domestic affairs only, as much as I tend to not vote Republican, I?d vote for him. Romney is a straight out business guy, I think a better overall candidate, but he doesn?t have the name recognition yet.
I would vote for just about anyone before I vote for Hillary, even if that meant voting Republican. But I?d vote for Hillary before I?d vote for Bush. I?ll take a gender pandering slimeball and lying weasel over a right wing religious idiot any day of the week.
But there is no question Hillary is a vote panderer. When running for Senate in New York, all of a sudden she was a Yankees and Mets fan. Now she?s trying to sway women, the same way Obama doesn?t pander for the black vote. I?m honestly surprised that after the Kerry fiasco with the flip flop label, they aren?t using the same thing for Hillary. She?d sell her mother for a few votes, and I heard she?s going to dye her face black at the African American rallies and get them to vote for the ?real? African American in the race.
Everything and anything you ever need to know about Hillary was contained in her authorization of a press ?leak? from her campaign team that Obama?s middle name was Osama, and that he was taught as a 5 year old in a school that taught Islam. Not a good person at all. But the lawyers love her.

Even Harvard Finds The Media Biased
By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Thursday, November 01, 2007 4:30 PM PT
Journalism: The debate is over. A consensus has been reached. On global warming? No, on how Democrats are favored on television, radio and in the newspapers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Related Topics: Media & Culture
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just like so many reports before it, a joint survey by the Project for Excellence in Journalism and Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy — hardly a bastion of conservative orthodoxy — found that in covering the current presidential race, the media are sympathetic to Democrats and hostile to Republicans.
Democrats are not only favored in the tone of the coverage. They get more coverage period. This is particularly evident on morning news shows, which "produced almost twice as many stories (51% to 27%) focused on Democratic candidates than on Republicans."
The most flagrant bias, however, was found in newspapers. In reviewing front-page coverage in 11 newspapers, the study found the tone positive in nearly six times as many stories about Democrats as it was negative.
Breaking it down by candidates, the survey found that Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were the favorites. "Obama's front page coverage was 70% positive and 9% negative, and Clinton's was similarly 61% positive and 13% negative."
In stories about Republicans, on the other hand, the tone was positive in only a quarter of the stories; in four in 10 it was negative.
The study also discovered that newspaper stories "tended to be focused more on political matters and less on issues and ideas than the media overall. In all, 71% of newspaper stories concentrated on the 'game,' compared with 63% overall."
Television has a similar problem. Only 10% of TV stories were focused on issues, and here, too, Democrats get the better of it.
Reviewing 154 stories on evening network newscasts over the course of 109 weeknights, the survey found that Democrats were presented in a positive light more than twice as often as they were portrayed as negative. Positive tones for Republicans were detected in less than a fifth of stories while a negative tone was twice as common.
The gap between Democrats and Republicans narrows on cable TV, but it's there nonetheless. Stories about Democrats were positive in more than a third of the cases, while Republicans were portrayed favorably in fewer than 29%. Republican led in unfriendly stories 30.4% to 25.5%.
CNN was the most hostile toward Republicans, MSNBC, surprisingly, the most positive. MSNBC was also the most favorable toward Democrats (47.2%), Fox (36.8%) the most critical.
The anti-GOP attitude also lives on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition." There, Democrats were approvingly covered more than a third as often as Republicans. Negative coverage of Democrats was a negligible 5.9%. It seemed to be reserved for Republicans, who were subject to one-fifth of the program's disparaging reports.
Even talk radio, generally considered a bastion of conservatism, has been relatively rough on the GOP. On conservative shows, Obama got more favorable treatment (27.8%) than Rudy Giuliani (25%). Sen. John McCain got a 50% favorability rating while Mitt Romney led the three GOP candidates with 66.7%.
The PEG-Shorenstein effort is only the latest to conclude that the mainstream media tilt left. Others include Stanley Rothman and Robert Lichter's groundbreaking 1986 book "The Media Elite"; "A Measure of Media Bias," a 2005 paper written by professors from UCLA and the University of Missouri; and Bernard Goldberg's two books, "Bias" and "Arrogance." All underscore the media's leftward leanings.
The media, of course, insist they are careful to keep personal opinions out of their coverage. But the facts tell another story — one that can't be edited or spiked.

No, you're debating politics Backlash/TheE style...
Time for you to go sit back down. ;)
Aside from Backlash's comment about how this is not special treatment but instead comports with the coverage given to other candidates announcements, did it ever occur to you that news corporations are run for profit? They report what people read. If it's got a liberal bias it's because there is a market for liberal news. If it's got a conservative bias, it's because there is a market for a conservative bias. Statements such as the above raise your lunacy rating from Backlash levels to Warclaidhm levels.
First, it's obvious the media has a GOP bias.

It's sad what you've become Rasputen. Even though your political beliefs were retarded in my opinion, they were based upon some sort of 'facts' as you see them. Now you are just being a dumbfucking troll with nothing better to do and nothing to add.
Best part though, was your admission that you are indeed a Warclaidhm.

Very rich coming from you. What did you add with that statement again?
I'm amused and slightly appauled however that you think of me even when I'm not involved in the thread. Way to let someone live in your mind
Now, go play with the other kindergarteners, who cry when someone uses their game (better than they do).
Hell, we could turn that into a PB worthy sig.

I usually don't make fun of the morbidly obese.. but you are stupid AND fat... which is ashame. At the very least, you should have a good personality.. and you've proven you don't have even one close to good. You are just a lonely, bitter, fat girl.. and for that you have my pity.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but she's a type 1 diabetic that would be best described as skinny.
Aside from that, I fail to see what relevance someone's weight has in a political thread that's been circling in the toilet since page 2.
